Haiti in the British Imagination by Jack Daniel Webb Pdf

In 1804, Haiti declared its independence from France to become the world’s first ‘black’ nation state. Throughout the nineteenth century, Haiti maintained its independence, consolidating and expanding its national and, at times, imperial projects. In doing so, Haiti joined a host of other nation states and empires that were emerging and expanding across the Atlantic World. The largest and, in many ways, most powerful of these empires was that of Britain. Haiti in the British Imagination is the first book to focus on the diplomatic relations and cultural interactions between Haiti and Britain in the second half of the nineteenth century. As well as a story of British imperial aggression and Haitian ‘resistance’, it is also one of a more complicated set of relations: of rivalry, cultural exchange and intellectual dialogue. At particular moments in the Victorian period, ideas about Haiti had wide-reaching relevancies for British anxieties over the quality of British imperial administration, over what should be the relations between ‘the British’ and people of African descent, and defining the limits of black sovereignty. Haitians were key in formulating, disseminating and correcting ideas about Haiti. Through acts of dialogue, Britons and Haitians impacted on the worldviews of one another, and with that changed the political and cultural landscapes of the Atlantic World.

Instant Patwa by Aj Henriques Pdf

What's the fastest way to learn the ins and outs of Jamaican Patois? Achieving fluency in Patwa (Jamaican Patois) requires a strategic approach, one that shows why -- and where -- what we hear seems to run together. "Instant Patwa" brings you that demystifying approach. English speakers are understood in Jamaica. Locals understand English. However, if you know only English without a grasp of the day-to-day language, you'll understand the local people way less than they understand you! The desired dynamic is equal understanding. With this in mind, "Instant Patwa" is written with a focus on what you'll hear (how native speakers speak), to show you how we say what we say. That's how "Instant Patwa" hones your listening skills and helps you to master spoken Patwa. Jamaican Patwa is relatively simple -- when you've learnt its secret patterns. After learning those patterns in this book, you should have a great grasp of Patwa. With Jamaica so near to Florida, and Kingston-culture so close to New York slang, Patwa is evolving. This book, therefore, is also a snapshot of authentic spoken Patwa as it now stands (and as it has stood for a few centuries). It's an easy read, with all you need for every Patwa conversation. Idiom, pronunciation and comprehension are at your fingertips in this simple guide. If you're an expatriate in Jamaica, this gives you an edge. If you're purely a fan of Jamaican Patwa anywhere in the world, what a great party skill you'll have after reading this book!

Six Machine by Chris Gayle Pdf

'If the ball's there, hit it. Don't worry about what might happen. Play for the glory. Play for the six' Chris Gayle is the only man to have ever hit a six off the first ball of a Test match. But then producing the impossible is an everyday act for the West Indies legend: the first man to smash an international T20 century, the first to hit a World Cup 200, the fastest century in the history of the game. He has hit twice as many T20 sixes as any other man and scored two Test triple centuries. All this is delivered with cricket's biggest bat and an even bigger smile. Off the pitch, millions follow him on Instagram and Twitter to catch a glimpse of a globe-trotting life spent in nightclubs as much as nets, hot-tubs as often as helmets and pads. He plays late, parties later, demolishes a king-size pile of pancakes and then strolls out to mangle another hapless bowling attack. But do we really know him? Do we know what took a shy, skinny kid from a cramped tin-roofed shack in the dusty back streets of Kingston, sharing a bed with three brothers and stealing empty bottles to buy food, to the very top of the cricket world - without losing himself along the way? Outrageous and utterly original, this unputdowneable memoir will leave you reeling. Welcome to the world of the Six Machine.

Teaching Anglophone Caribbean Literature by Supriya M. Nair Pdf

This volume recognizes that the most challenging aspect of introducing students to anglophone Caribbean literature--the sheer variety of intellectual and artistic traditions in Western and non-Western cultures that relate to it--also offers the greatest opportunities to teachers. Courses on anglophone literature in the Caribbean can consider the region's specific histories and contexts even as they explore common issues: the legacies of slavery, colonialism, and colonial education; nationalism; exile and migration; identity and hybridity; class and racial conflict; gender and sexuality; religion and ritual. This volume considers how the availability of materials shapes syllabuses and recommends print, digital, and visual resources for teaching. The essays examine a host of topics, including the following: the development of multiethnic populations in the Caribbean and the role of various creole languages in the literature oral art forms, such as dub poetry and reggae music the influence of anglophone literature in the Caribbean on literary movements outside it, such as the Harlem Renaissance and black British writing Carnival religious rituals and beliefs specific genres such as slave narratives and autobiography film and drama the economics of rum Many essays list resources for further reading, and the volume concludes with a section of additional teaching resources.

Design, Displacement, Migration by Sarah A. Lichtman,Jilly Traganou Pdf

Design, Displacement, Migration: Spatial and Material Histories gathers a collection of scholarly and creative voices—spanning design, art, and architectural history; design studies; curation; poetry; activism; and social sciences––to interrogate the intersections of design and displacement. The contributors foreground objects, spaces, visual, and material practices and consider design’s role in the empire, the state, and various colonizing regimes in controlling the mass movement of people, things, and ideas across borders, as well as in social acts that resist forced mobility and immobility, or enact new possibilities. By consciously surfacing echoes, rhymes, and dissonances among varied histories, this volume highlights local specificity while also accounting for the vectors of displacement and design across borders and histories. Design, Displacement, Migration: Spatial and Material Histories shows displacement to be a lens for understanding space and materiality and vice versa, particularly within the context of modernity and colonialism. This book will be of interest to scholars working in design history, design studies, architectural history, art history, urban studies, and migration studies.

Language, Race and the Global Jamaican by Hubert Devonish,Karen Carpenter Pdf

This book examines the racial and socio-linguistic dynamics of Jamaica, a majority black nation where the dominant ideology continues to look to white countries as models, yet which continues to defy the odds. The authors trace the history of how a nation of less than three million people has come to be at the centre of cultural, racial and linguistic influence globally; producing a culture than has transformed the way that the world listens to music, and a dialect that has formed the lingua franca for a generation of young people. The book will be of particular interest to students and scholars of Caribbean linguistics, Africana studies, diaspora studies, sociology of language and sociolinguistics more broadly.

The Jamaican Deportees by Charlie Brown Pdf

This book is about the effect of U.S. Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRIRA of 1996) and criminal deportation to Jamaica; the issues associated with 'deportees' or deported migrants resettlement and re-integration, and increased crime and violence in Jamaica which several 'high-ranking' police officers and policy-makers claimed deportees are responsible for. It also represents a dedicated attempt to bridge both lines of inquiry between increased criminal deportation and increased crime and violence in Jamaica over a period of time, wherein criminal deportees are constantly being blamed for the high murder rate and alarming crime figures in the country, placing deported migrants at a severe disadvantage. Based on six years of studies and notes-taking, I find that there are two types of deported migrants and over six different categories of us and I write in details about the categories. Some people are unreformed or dangerous and are involved in criminal activities based on a variety of factors, while the majority are law abiding citizens. Quite a few, including myself have tertiary degrees, meaningful skills, and 'first world' experiences that are in demand thus we can contribute to the society in positive ways, but we are highly marginalized. And the Government especially, and some uninformed people in the society discriminate against deported migrants (deportees) for arcane reasons. I write about the issues and challenges that some deported migrants have to deal with, the problems that some 'unreformed' or desperate ones have caused, the reasons why re-integration and meaningful support is necessary, how I was abducted or unlawfully arrested by the police and wrongfully prosecuted and unlawfully convicted by a state prosecutor, and how I was sentenced to an illegal term of imprisonment by a presiding judge and then wrongfully or inadvertently deported to Jamaica by the ICE even though I am a veteran of the US Army with a service-connected injury. The IIRIRA of 1996 is a reform of laws that are in need of careful revision in the interest of the 'American Justice' and fairness to non-US citizens who are permanent residents of the United States. A 'must read' edition.
