The U.S. Marine Corps and Defense Unification 1944-47 by Gordon W. Keiser Pdf

This National Defense University Military History examines the role of the U. S. Marine Corps in the defense unification controversy of 1944-1947. World War II demanded the coordinated training, equipping, transporting, and employing of huge forces and soon exposed the organizational flaws of the prewar military establishment. Sentiment for unifying the U. S. military effort predated World War II, but the war provided the impetus for a major reorganization. Long before the end of the war, there was a growing conviction in the War Department and Congress to establish a system to coordinate and unify the activities of the U. S. Armed Forces. The National Security Act established a more unified defense entity in 1947, but the Marine Corps - deftly practicing the "politics of survival" - emerged with its organizational identity and integrity essentially intact. The author, Colonel Gordon Keiser, USMC, relates the history of how the Corps managed to survive amidst the political maneuvering of more than an account of one Services struggle to endure. It contains interesting insights into the origins of the modern Department of Defense and the current defense policymaking process. Although todays circumstances are vastly changed, the Nation remains concerned about issues such as defense organization, the proper role of military lobbying, and the relationship of the Services to one another and to the Congress.

A National Force by Peter Charles Kasurak Pdf

This landmark book dispels the idea that the period between the Second World War and the unification of the armed services in 1968 constituted the Canadian Army's "golden age." Drawing on recently declassified documents, Peter Kasurak depicts an era clouded by the military leadership's failure to loosen the grasp of British army culture, produce its own doctrine, and advise political leaders effectively. The discrepancy between the army's goals and the Canadian state's aspirations as a peacemaker in the postwar world resulted in a series of civilian-military crises that ended only when the scandal of the Somalia Affair in 1993 forced reform.

Understanding Military Culture by Allan Douglas English Pdf

Examines military culture from a theoretical and a practical point of view Considers conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq that have highlighted the importance of culture as a concept in analyzing the ability of military organizations to perform certain tasks Culture has been described as the bedrock of military effectiveness because it influences everything an armed service does. The recent conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq have highlighted the importance of culture as a concept in analyzing the ability of military organizations to perform certain tasks. In fact, a military's culture may determine its preferred way of fighting and dealing with other challenges, like incorporating new technologies, more than its doctrine or organizational structure. of view. It focuses on the Canadian and American military cultures, and it provides the first detailed examination of the culture of the Canadian Forces. It also compares their culture to that of the US armed forces. The book concludes that while the culture of the Canadian Forces has been Americanized to a certain extent, the culture of the US armed forces, due to changes in their personnel and roles, has experienced a certain degree of Canadianization at the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st centuries.
