A Course in Universal Algebra by S. Burris,H. P. Sankappanavar Pdf

Universal algebra has enjoyed a particularly explosive growth in the last twenty years, and a student entering the subject now will find a bewildering amount of material to digest. This text is not intended to be encyclopedic; rather, a few themes central to universal algebra have been developed sufficiently to bring the reader to the brink of current research. The choice of topics most certainly reflects the authors' interests. Chapter I contains a brief but substantial introduction to lattices, and to the close connection between complete lattices and closure operators. In particular, everything necessary for the subsequent study of congruence lattices is included. Chapter II develops the most general and fundamental notions of uni versal algebra-these include the results that apply to all types of algebras, such as the homomorphism and isomorphism theorems. Free algebras are discussed in great detail-we use them to derive the existence of simple algebras, the rules of equational logic, and the important Mal'cev conditions. We introduce the notion of classifying a variety by properties of (the lattices of) congruences on members of the variety. Also, the center of an algebra is defined and used to characterize modules (up to polynomial equivalence). In Chapter III we show how neatly two famous results-the refutation of Euler's conjecture on orthogonal Latin squares and Kleene's character ization of languages accepted by finite automata-can be presented using universal algebra. We predict that such "applied universal algebra" will become much more prominent.

Universal Algebra, Algebraic Logic, and Databases by B. Plotkin Pdf

Modern algebra, which not long ago seemed to be a science divorced from real life, now has numerous applications. Many fine algebraic structures are endowed with meaningful contents. Now and then practice suggests new and unexpected structures enriching algebra. This does not mean that algebra has become merely a tool for applications. Quite the contrary, it significantly benefits from the new connections. The present book is devoted to some algebraic aspects of the theory of databases. It consists of three parts. The first part contains information about universal algebra, algebraic logic is the subject of the second part, and the third one deals with databases. The algebraic material of the flI'St two parts serves the common purpose of applying algebra to databases. The book is intended for use by mathematicians, and mainly by algebraists, who realize the necessity to unite theory and practice. It is also addressed to programmers, engineers and all potential users of mathematics who want to construct their models with the help of algebra and logic. Nowadays, the majority of professional mathematicians work in close cooperation with representatives of applied sciences and even industrial technology. It is neces sary to develop an ability to see mathematics in different particular situations. One of the tasks of this book is to promote the acquisition of such skills.

An Invitation to General Algebra and Universal Constructions by George M. Bergman Pdf

Rich in examples and intuitive discussions, this book presents General Algebra using the unifying viewpoint of categories and functors. Starting with a survey, in non-category-theoretic terms, of many familiar and not-so-familiar constructions in algebra (plus two from topology for perspective), the reader is guided to an understanding and appreciation of the general concepts and tools unifying these constructions. Topics include: set theory, lattices, category theory, the formulation of universal constructions in category-theoretic terms, varieties of algebras, and adjunctions. A large number of exercises, from the routine to the challenging, interspersed through the text, develop the reader's grasp of the material, exhibit applications of the general theory to diverse areas of algebra, and in some cases point to outstanding open questions. Graduate students and researchers wishing to gain fluency in important mathematical constructions will welcome this carefully motivated book.

Universal Algebra and Coalgebra by Klaus Denecke,Shelly L. Wismath Pdf

The purpose of this book is to study the structures needed to model objects in universal algebra, universal coalgebra and theoretical computer science. Universal algebra is used to describe different kinds of algebraic structures, while coalgebras are used to model state-based machines in computer science. The connection between algebras and coalgebras provides a way to connect static data-oriented systems with dynamical behavior-oriented systems. Algebras are used to describe data types and coalgebras describe abstract systems or machines. The book presents a clear overview of the area, from which further study may proceed.

Universal Algebra for Computer Scientists by Wolfgang Wechler Pdf

A new model-theoretic approach to universal algebra is offered in this book. Written for computer scientists, it presents a systematic development of the methods and results of universal algebra that are useful in a variety of applications in computer science. The notation is simple and the concepts are clearly presented. The book concerns the algebraic characterization of axiomatic classes of algebras (equational, implicational, and universal Horn classes) by closure operators generalizing the famous Birkhoff Variety Theorem, and the algebraic characterization of the related theories. The book also presents a thorough study of term rewriting systems. Besides basic notions, the Knuth-Bendix completion procedure and termination proof methods are considered. A third main topic is that of fixpoint techniques and complete ordered algebras. Algebraic specifications of abstract data types and algebraic semantics of recursive program schemes are treated as applications. The book is self-contained and suitable both as a textbook for graduate courses and as a reference for researchers.

Universal Algebra by Clifford Bergman Pdf

Starting with the most basic notions, Universal Algebra: Fundamentals and Selected Topics introduces all the key elements needed to read and understand current research in this field. Based on the author’s two-semester course, the text prepares students for research work by providing a solid grounding in the fundamental constructions and concepts of universal algebra and by introducing a variety of recent research topics. The first part of the book focuses on core components, including subalgebras, congruences, lattices, direct and subdirect products, isomorphism theorems, a clone of operations, terms, free algebras, Birkhoff’s theorem, and standard Maltsev conditions. The second part covers topics that demonstrate the power and breadth of the subject. The author discusses the consequences of Jónsson’s lemma, finitely and nonfinitely based algebras, definable principal congruences, and the work of Foster and Pixley on primal and quasiprimal algebras. He also includes a proof of Murskiĭ’s theorem on primal algebras and presents McKenzie’s characterization of directly representable varieties, which clearly shows the power of the universal algebraic toolbox. The last chapter covers the rudiments of tame congruence theory. Throughout the text, a series of examples illustrates concepts as they are introduced and helps students understand how universal algebra sheds light on topics they have already studied, such as Abelian groups and commutative rings. Suitable for newcomers to the field, the book also includes carefully selected exercises that reinforce the concepts and push students to a deeper understanding of the theorems and techniques.

Finite Semigroups and Universal Algebra by Jorge Almeida Pdf

Motivated by applications in theoretical computer science, the theory of finite semigroups has emerged in recent years as an autonomous area of mathematics. It fruitfully combines methods, ideas and constructions from algebra, combinatorics, logic and topology. In simple terms, the theory aims at a classification of finite semigroups in certain classes called “pseudovarieties”. The classifying characteristics have both structural and syntactical aspects, the general connection between them being part of universal algebra. Besides providing a foundational study of the theory in the setting of arbitrary abstract finite algebras, this book stresses the syntactical approach to finite semigroups. This involves studying (relatively) free and profinite free semigroups and their presentations. The techniques used are illustrated in a systematic study of various operators on pseudovarieties of semigroups. It will find its place on the bookshelves of many a specialist in semigroups, as well as species of algebraists and computer scientists, including graduate students.” Semigroup Forum “The book … constitutes an important contribution to the most active part of the present theory of finite semigroups. All overwhelming majority of the results included in it is very new and has been scattered over journals so far. The book does not cover all of the theory of semigroup … but it is extremely rich in material and ideas presented with skill and dedication. The book has already influenced the area essentially, and its influence will certainly grow … I think the book is a must for researchers in the area but it is also very useful for all those who want to trace modern developments in the theory of semigroups.” Mathematics Abstracts

Don Pigozzi on Abstract Algebraic Logic, Universal Algebra, and Computer Science by Janusz Czelakowski Pdf

This book celebrates the work of Don Pigozzi on the occasion of his 80th birthday. In addition to articles written by leading specialists and his disciples, it presents Pigozzi’s scientific output and discusses his impact on the development of science. The book both catalogues his works and offers an extensive profile of Pigozzi as a person, sketching the most important events, not only related to his scientific activity, but also from his personal life. It reflects Pigozzi's contribution to the rise and development of areas such as abstract algebraic logic (AAL), universal algebra and computer science, and introduces new scientific results. Some of the papers also present chronologically ordered facts relating to the development of the disciplines he contributed to, especially abstract algebraic logic. The book offers valuable source material for historians of science, especially those interested in history of mathematics and logic.

The present book was conceived as an introduction for the user of universal algebra, rather than a handbook for the specialist, but when the first edition appeared in 1965, there were practically no other books entir~ly devoted to the subject, whether introductory or specialized. Today the specialist in the field is well provided for, but there is still a demand for an introduction to the subject to suit the user, and this seemed to justify a reissue of the book. Naturally some changes have had to be made; in particular, I have corrected all errors that have been brought to my notice. Besides errors, some obscurities in the text have been removed and the references brought up to date. I should like to express my thanks to a number of correspondents for their help, in particular C. G. d'Ambly, W. Felscher, P. Goralcik, P. J. Higgins, H.-J. Hoehnke, J. R. Isbell, A. H. Kruse, E. J. Peake, D. Suter, J. S. Wilson. But lowe a special debt to G. M. Bergman, who has provided me with extensive comments. particularly on Chapter VII and the supplementary chapters. I have also con sulted reviews of the first edition, as well as the Italian and Russian translations.

Lattices, Semigroups, and Universal Algebra by Jorge Almeida,Gabriela Bordalo,Philip Dwinger Pdf

This volume contains papers which, for the most part, are based on talks given at an international conference on Lattices, Semigroups, and Universal Algebra that was held in Lisbon, Portugal during the week of June 20-24, 1988. The conference was dedicated to the memory of Professor Antonio Almeida Costa, a Portuguese mathematician who greatly contributed to the development of th algebra in Portugal, on the 10 anniversary of his death. The themes of the conference reflect some of his research interests and those of his students. The purpose of the conference was to gather leading experts in Lattices, Semigroups, and Universal Algebra and to promote a discussion of recent developments and trends in these areas. All three fields have grown rapidly during the last few decades with varying degrees of interaction. Lattice theory and Universal Algebra have historically evolved alongside with a large overlap between the groups of researchers in the two fields. More recently, techniques and ideas of these theories have been used extensively in the theory of semigroups. Conversely, some developments in that area may inspire further developments in Universal Algebra. On the other hand, techniques of semi group theory have naturally been employed in the study of semilattices. Several papers in this volume elaborate on these interactions.

Universal Algebra and Applications in Theoretical Computer Science by Klaus Denecke,Shelly L. Wismath Pdf

Over the past 20 years, the emergence of clone theory, hyperequational theory, commutator theory and tame congruence theory has led to a growth of universal algebra both in richness and in applications, especially in computer science. Yet most of the classic books on the subject are long out of print and, to date, no other book has integrated these theories with the long-established work that supports them. Universal Algebra and Applications in Theoretical Computer Science introduces the basic concepts of universal algebra and surveys some of the newer developments in the field. The first half of the book provides a solid grounding in the core material. A leisurely pace, careful exposition, numerous examples, and exercises combine to form an introduction to the subject ideal for beginning graduate students or researchers from other areas. The second half of the book focuses on applications in theoretical computer science and advanced topics, including Mal'cev conditions, tame congruence theory, clones, and commutators. The impact of the advances in universal algebra on computer science is just beginning to be realized, and the field will undoubtedly continue to grow and mature. Universal Algebra and Applications in Theoretical Computer Science forms an outstanding text and offers a unique opportunity to build the foundation needed for further developments in its theory and in its computer science applications.
