Growth Hormone Deficiency in Adults by Jens O. L. Jørgensen,Jens Sandahl Christiansen Pdf

It has been known for over 40 years that GH-deficient-children benefit from replacement with the hormone. But GH, essential for longitudinal growth, also plays a role after completion of final height. With the introduction of biosynthetic human GH 20 years ago, the use of GH was no longer restricted to severe growth retardation in hypopituitary children. This book will take the reader behind the myths of GH and into the real world of clinical endocrinology. The contributions stem from recognized clinicians and scientists who have been working in the field for decades. The contents encompass traditional end points of GH therapy such as body composition, bone biology and physical performance. Attention is also devoted to diagnostic aspects and side effects. Additional features range from clinical epidemiology to quality of life, and novel areas such as the impact of traumatic brain injury on pituitary function are also covered. The present volume of Frontiers of Hormone Research is essential reading for health care professionals interested in clinical endocrinology and GH.

Frontiers in Thyroidology by Eduardo Gaitan Pdf

"Frontiers In Thyroidology" assembles the prize lectures, symposia, and papers presented during the Ninth International Thyroid Congress in Sao Paulo, Brazil in September, 1985. This book represents the State-of the-Art in thyroid studies with its continuous expansion into the areas of immunology, molecular biology, clinical and environmental medicine. As its name also indicates, the material compiled in this volume defines important questions to be answered in basic and applied aspects of the thyroid. So, this book clearly demonstrates the rewards, excitement, and challenges posed by the thyroid gland. Once again, the thyroid gland, through its unique and important functions and implications in health and disease, has been able to congregate scientists throughout the world to communicate their findings, to share their expertise and experiences, and to strengthen their bonds of friendship and commitment to make a better world through their work. This publication consists of 309 papers in 19 different topics. The prize lectures and symposia review and update our knowledge in basic and clinical aspects of exceptional interest in the thyroid field. "Frontiers in Thyroidology" adds to a series of publications from previous interna tional thyroid meetings which includes: "Advances in Thyroid Research", London, 1960; "Current Topics in Thyroid Research", Rome, 1965; "Further Advances in Thyroid Research", Vienna, 1970; "Thyroid Research", Boston, 1975, and "Thyroid Research VIII", Sydney, 1980. In this concise, gold-standard 4th edition book, the volume editors and authors synthesize the prior three editions and provide a comprehensive and expanded review on the latest in the diagnosis and management of thyroid nodules, as well as an update on parathyroid disease and non-endocrine lesions of the neck. This user-friendly edition again emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach to thyroid ultrasound and UGFNA, offering all the new information and subtleties clinicians must know in the application of this technique, now firmly established as a primary tool for diagnosing and managing thyroid disease. Developed by renowned experts in thyroid and parathyroid disease, the book covers not only thyroid and parathyroid disease, but also imaging of the salivary glands and other non-endocrine lesions of the neck. In this edition, the authors expand the chapters on both surgical and non-surgical management. Given the increased use of molecular markers in thyroid evaluation, an excellent chapter addresses this topic. Finally, as more endocrinologists and surgeons perform ultrasounds in their office practices, a chapter on authoring ultrasound reports is now included. Combining the collective wisdom of specialists who treat patients with thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer and parathyroid disease, Handbook of Thyroid and Parathyroid Ultrasound and Ultrasound-Guided FNA, 4th Edition is an invaluable resource and will continue serving as the “go to” guide for surgeons, endocrinologists, fellows and residents. Graves’ Disease by Basil Rapoport,Sandra M. McLachlan Pdf

From the perspective of the investigator, Graves' disease is a fascinating disorder with unique features and opportunities for study. The discovery in 1956 that Graves' disease was caused by a humoral factor, later shown to be an antibody to the TSH receptor, was a triumph for modern investigative medicine. Rapid progress is now being made in (i) understanding the molecular interaction between autoantibodies and the TSH receptor, (ii) identifying the genes that contribute to the predisposition to disease, (iii) developing an animal model of Graves' disease, and (iv) identifying the long-sought orbital antigen in ophthalmopathy. From the clinical standpoint, although Graves' disease is eminently treatable, there is no definitive cure. None of the therapeutic options are ideal. It is hoped that rapid progress in understanding the pathogenesis of the disease will lead to the ultimate goal of some form of immunotherapy that will make antithyroid drugs, radioiodine and thyroidectomy obsolete. The chapters in Graves' Disease: Pathogenesis and Treatment represent the viewpoints of many prominent clinicians and investigators working in the field. The editors are grateful for their contributions which cover an unusually comprehensive compendium of subjects relating to the disease.
