Although methods of lithotripsy are effective in removing urinary stones, these methods can only treat the symptoms, not cure the disease. Depending on the nature of the stones, there is a recurrence rate of 60-100% if no follow-up measures are taken. With detailed knowledge of the causes of urinary stone formation, however, recurrences can largely be prevented. This handbook is designed to assist clinicians and health care professionals caring for patients with renal stones by guiding them through the appropriate diagnostic studies and the development of effective and safe plans for treatment and prevention. Its clear organization makes it simple to use as a reference work, and its practical value is enhanced by the outline format which facilitates the understanding of diagnostic studies and treatment plans. For the new edition all chapters have been revised in consideration of the authors own experiences, the results in the international literature and current European and international guidelines. Detailed tables for the relevant nutrients (calcium, uric acid, oxalate) of numerous foodstuffs and reference values for the urinary composition in children have been added. The authors have extensive experience in both urinary stone research and the development and practical application of therapeutic concepts. The close cooperation among physicians, clinical chemists, and nutritionists is a successful strategy in the prophylaxis of recurrent urinary stones.

Urinary Stones by Anonim Pdf

Although methods of urinary stone removal are becoming evermore effective, the prevalence of urolithiasis is continuously increasing. Epidemiological studies show that 5-10% of the population suffer from urinary stones. Stone removal alone is not a curative measure. Depending on the stone composition, a recurrence rate of 60-100% must be expected. Hence, analysis of the stone material and basic diagnosis of the metabolic origins of urolithiasis are imperative, as well as consistent recurrence prevention in high-risk patients. This revised and updated handbook meets these requirements. It is designed to assist clinicians and healthcare professionals by guiding them through the appropriate diagnostic examinations and the development of effective and safe plans for treatment and prevention. It takes the newest international and European guidelines for urinary stone therapy into account, and includes the latest findings in clinical and laboratory diagnosis, dietary therapy and medication. Furthermore, it offers specific solutions for the treatment of children. Its clear organization makes it a valuable and indispensable reference book, especially for urologists, nephrologists and pediatricians.

Shock Wave Lithotripsy by James Lingeman Pdf

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL)" arrived in the United States in February of 1984 with explosive impact in the field of urology. The first ESWL treatment in the United States with the Dornier H~ device occurred at the Methodist Hospital of Indiana, and by the end of 1984, In spite of the rapidly the United StatesESWL study group had accrued over2,5()() ESWL treatments. accumulated experience at the six institutions involved in the FDA trial of the Dornier HM] device, other urologists in this country and around the world had little opportunity to gain knowledge about the utilization of this revolutionary technique. For this reason, the Methodist Hospital of Indiana organized the first symposium on shock wave lithotripsy in February of1985. Interest in this meeting was intense, as approval of the Dornier device had occurred only a few weeks earlier in December of 1984. Because of the success of this initial meeting, subsequent meetings have been held annually in Indianapolis. Following the third annual symposium on extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy in March of 1987, a number of participants and attendees requested that the information presented at the meeting be made available. Therefore, plans were made to publish the proceedings of the next meeting which occurred March 5 and 6, 1988. The Methodist Hospi tal ofIndiana' s 4th Symposium on Shock Wave Lithotripsy: State of the Art was the best attended meeting to date with over 650 registrants from 36 states and 24 countries.

Treatment of Urolithiasis by M. Akimoto,E. Higashihara,H. Kumon,Z. Masaki,S. Orikasa Pdf

Urolithiasis is not only one of the most frequently encountered diseases at uro logical clinics; it is also the disorder whose treatment has shown the most rapid progress in the past decade. In that period, medicine has experienced a real revolution, characterized by minimally invasive treatments, improvement of the quality of life, and cost-effectiveness in treatment outcomes. In urology, the revolution started with the development of endoscopic retrograde treatment of urolithiasis in the upper urinary tract, which led to development of the percuta neous antegrade maneuver in the latter half of the 1970s. The most remarkable event occurred in 1982, when clinical use of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy was introduced by the Munich group, represented by Dr. Christian Chaussy, at the 18th Congress of the International Society of Urology in San Francisco. With the advent of these new strategies, open surgery for urolithiasis has all but dis appeared. Today, with the availability of new technology and equipment, guide lines for the treatment of urolithiasis have changed in all developed countries. It is quite timely that the Meeting of International Consultation on Urolithiasis will be held in Paris in June 2001 to establish international guidelines for urolithiasis. Looking through this textbook for urolithiasis, I was greatly impressed to learn that we have already drawn up some guidelines. The book includes all the updated advances of urolithiasis presented by the most prominent and experi enced urologists from all around the world.
