Agent Sonya by Ben Macintyre Pdf

The international bestselling author of A Spy and the Traitor and A Spy Among Friends reveals one of the last great untold spy stories of the twentieth century--the woman hidden in plain sight who set the stage for the Cold War. If you happened to be in the quiet English village of Great Rollright in 1942, you might have seen a thin, elegant woman emerging from a cottage and climbing onto her bicycle. Ursula Burton had three children and a husband named Len, who worked as a machinist nearby. She was friendly but reserved, and spoke English with a very slight foreign accent. Her neighbours in the Cotswolds knew little about her. They did not know that Burton was a dedicated communist, a Soviet Colonel, and a veteran spy who had already conducted espionage operations in China, Poland, and Switzerland. They did not know that Len was also a Soviet spy, or that Burton kept a powerful radio transmitter connected to Moscow in their outhouse. They did not know that in her last espionage mission, Burton had infiltrated communist spies into a top-secret American intelligence operation parachting anti-Nazi agents into the Third Reich. But perhaps the most remarkable thing they did not know was that when Burton hopped onto her bike and pedaled away, she was heading to a countryside rendezvous with Klaus Fuchs, the nuclear physicist working on Britain's top secret atomic weapons program. Klaus was Burton's best agent, and together they were gathering the scientific secrets that would enable the Soviet Union to build the bomb. Ben Macintyre's latest true-life spy story is a masterpiece about the woman code-named "Sonya," one of the most important female spies in history. Hunted by the Chinese, the Japanese, the Nazis, MI5, MI6, and the FBI, she evaded all of them, and survived as well the brutal Soviet purges that left many of her friends and colleagues dead. Her story reflects the great ideological clash of the twentieth century, between communism, fascism, and Western democracy, and casts new light on the spy battles and shifting allegiances of our own times. With access to Sonya's papers and her intelligence files from multiple countries, Macintyre has conjured a thrilling secret history of a landmark agent, a true original who altered the course of the Cold War and helped plunge the world into a nuclear standoff that would last for decades.

Windland's Rescue by Audel Cayce Pdf

On the morning of Windland Cloud’s sixteenth birthday, she awoke from a frightening dream that left her feeling shaken and in desperate need of human company, but the house was empty. Her parents were nowhere to be found and they left no note. This adds to her sense of unease and the need to escape the residue from the dream and thoughts of her family’s dysfunctional life teetering on the edge of poverty, which is nearly unbearable. Windland grabs her hiking boots, laces up, and heads to a nearby state park to try and clear her mind. On the way there her fantastical journey begins… Falling off a mountain into the year 1896, dealing with a woman who wants her dead, and avoiding an overly suspicious sheriff are the downside of the adventure Fate throws her into. The upside seems to be rescuing a reclusive woman, who may hold the secret to how Windland can get home, and a blue-eyed Irishman who holds not only Windland’s heart but her future in his hands. Will she be able to return to her own time? And what will happen when she does? Windland’s Rescue is a coming of age tale with a cast of characters that span time and galaxies; energy grids and traveling portals; wicked women and secret rooms – and the ultimate need to find your way back home.

Vincent in Brixton by Nicholas Wright Pdf

A dramatization of the time that Van Gogh spent in Brixton in the 1870s--a period before he became a painter and one that changed him completely. Vincent develops a rapport with a widow twice his age, which blossoms into a full-blown love affair, only to be cruelly curtailed by the arrival of his fiercely puritan young sister. From the author of Cressida, Mrs. Klein, and the recent adaptation of Wedekind's Lulu.

Changing the Victorian Subject by Maggie Tonki,Mandy Treagus,Madeleine Seys,Sharon Crozier-De Rosa Pdf

The essays in this collection examine how both colonial and British authors engage with Victorian subjects and subjectivities in their work. Some essays explore the emergence of a key trope within colonial texts: the negotiation of Victorian and settler-subject positions. Others argue for new readings of key metropolitan texts and their repositioning within literary history. These essays work to recognise the plurality of the rubric of the 'Victorian' and to expand how the category of Victorian studies can be understood.

Reading Mastery Prescription (RMP) by Sarah Hardesty Pdf

Many methods for teaching people to read exist today. Reading mastery on the whole is made of many segments summed together. Reading programs have taken a fraction out of order, attempting to teach an end segment at the beginning. Some segments are left out entirely. This will frustrate a new reader. Sounding out letters is a great beginning and should not be omitted. But there is also a vital fraction of reading wholeness that should immediately follow sounding out, which shows the resemblance of rhyming and patterns in the smallest portions of words. These two, sounding out and identifying patterns, are most important to the mastery of reading. Sounding out makes accomplished goals stick in the mind. Showing small patterns in repetition through fun enhances faster learning. The title for this book, Reading Mastery Prescription, came about while I was pondering the book's utility for those who would teach reading. I visualized the analogy of someone who is illiterate meeting with a reading teacher just as a sick person must go to the doctor, seeking a cure for an illness. The doctor will write a prescription and discuss other things that can be done to assist with optimum health. The medication must be taken in the exact dose and method as prescribed, over a period of time, until the illness is conquered. The reading teacher and aspiring teachers can prescribe these easy lessons and use this straightforward method of reading instruction to cure a person's illiteracy. The lessons should be followed exactly, without skipping a dose, and in the order set out until illiteracy is conquered. Whether the student is young, middle-aged, or elderly, if the teacher prescribes this reading method and the student applies it, reading will produce its own joys and great satisfaction.
