Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and Beyond by Hung-Hsi Wu Pdf

This is the last of three volumes that, together, give an exposition of the mathematics of grades 9–12 that is simultaneously mathematically correct and grade-level appropriate. The volumes are consistent with CCSSM (Common Core State Standards for Mathematics) and aim at presenting the mathematics of K–12 as a totally transparent subject. This volume distinguishes itself from others of the same genre in getting the mathematics right. In trigonometry, this volume makes explicit the fact that the trigonometric functions cannot even be defined without the theory of similar triangles. It also provides details for extending the domain of definition of sine and cosine to all real numbers. It explains as well why radians should be used for angle measurements and gives a proof of the conversion formulas between degrees and radians. In calculus, this volume pares the technicalities concerning limits down to the essential minimum to make the proofs of basic facts about differentiation and integration both correct and accessible to school teachers and educators; the exposition may also benefit beginning math majors who are learning to write proofs. An added bonus is a correct proof that one can get a repeating decimal equal to a given fraction by the “long division” of the numerator by the denominator. This proof attends to all three things all at once: what an infinite decimal is, why it is equal to the fraction, and how long division enters the picture. This book should be useful for current and future teachers of K–12 mathematics, as well as for some high school students and for education professionals.

Teaching with Tasks for Effective Mathematics Learning by Peter Sullivan,Doug Clarke,Barbara Clarke Pdf

This book is about how teachers can use classroom mathematics tasks to support student learning, and presents data on the ways in which teachers used those tasks in a particular research project. It is the product of research findings focusing on teacher practice, teacher learning and knowledge, and student learning. It demonstrates how teachers can use mathematics tasks to promote effective student learning.

Number Theory for the Millennium II by Michael A. Bennett Pdf

Building on the tradition of an outstanding series of conferences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the organizers attracted an international group of scholars to open the new Millennium with a conference that reviewed the current state of number theory research and pointed to future directions in the field. The conference was the largest general number theory conference in recent history, featuring a total of 159 talks, with the plenary lectures given by George Andrews, Jean Bourgain, Kevin Ford, Ron Graham, Andrew Granville, Roger Heath-Brown, Christopher Hooley, Winnie Li, Kumar Murty, Mel Nathanson, Ken Ono, Carl Pomerance, Bjorn Poonen, Wolfgang Schmidt, Chris Skinner, K. Soundararajan, Robert Tijdeman, Robert Vaughan, and Hugh Williams. The Proceedings Volumes of the conference review some of the major number theory achievements of this century and to chart some of the directions in which the subject will be heading during the new century. These volumes will serve as a useful reference to researchers in the area and an introduction to topics of current interest in number theory for a general audience in mathematics.

100 Years of Math Milestones: The Pi Mu Epsilon Centennial Collection by Stephan Ramon Garcia,Steven J. Miller Pdf

This book is an outgrowth of a collection of 100 problems chosen to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the undergraduate math honor society Pi Mu Epsilon. Each chapter describes a problem or event, the progress made, and connections to entries from other years or other parts of mathematics. In places, some knowledge of analysis or algebra, number theory or probability will be helpful. Put together, these problems will be appealing and accessible to energetic and enthusiastic math majors and aficionados of all stripes. Stephan Ramon Garcia is WM Keck Distinguished Service Professor and professor of mathematics at Pomona College. He is the author of four books and over eighty research articles in operator theory, complex analysis, matrix analysis, number theory, discrete geometry, and other fields. He has coauthored dozens of articles with students, including one that appeared in The Best Writing on Mathematics: 2015. He is on the editorial boards of Notices of the AMS, Proceedings of the AMS, American Mathematical Monthly, Involve, and Annals of Functional Analysis. He received four NSF research grants as principal investigator and five teaching awards from three different institutions. He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society and was the inaugural recipient of the Society's Dolciani Prize for Excellence in Research. Steven J. Miller is professor of mathematics at Williams College and a visiting assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University. He has published five books and over one hundred research papers, most with students, in accounting, computer science, economics, geophysics, marketing, mathematics, operations research, physics, sabermetrics, and statistics. He has served on numerous editorial boards, including the Journal of Number Theory, Notices of the AMS, and the Pi Mu Epsilon Journal. He is active in enrichment and supplemental curricular initiatives for elementary and secondary mathematics, from the Teachers as Scholars Program and VCTAL (Value of Computational Thinking Across Grade Levels), to numerous math camps (the Eureka Program, HCSSiM, the Mathematics League International Summer Program, PROMYS, and the Ross Program). He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society, an at-large senator for Phi Beta Kappa, and a member of the Mount Greylock Regional School Committee, where he sees firsthand the challenges of applying mathematics.

The Conference on L-Functions by Lin Weng,Masanobu Kaneko Pdf

This invaluable volume collects papers written by many of the world''s top experts on L -functions. It not only covers a wide range of topics from algebraic and analytic number theories, automorphic forms, to geometry and mathematical physics, but also treats the theory as a whole. The contributions reflect the latest, most advanced and most important aspects of L- functions. In particular, it contains Hida''s lecture notes at the conference and at the Eigenvariety semester in Harvard University and Weng''s detailed account of his works on high rank zeta functions and non-abelian L -functions. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Quantum Maass Forms (435 KB). Contents: Quantum Maass Forms (R Bruggeman); o-invariant of p -Adic L -Functions (H Hida); Siegel Modular Forms of Weight Three and Conjectural Correspondence of Shimura Type and Langlands Type (T Ibukiyama); Convolutions of Fourier Coefficients of Cusp Forms and the Circle Method (M Jutila); On an Extension of the Derivation Relation for Multiple Zeta Values (M Kaneko); On Symmetric Powers of Cusp Forms on GL 2 (H H Kim); Zeta Functions of Root Systems (Y Komori et al.); Sums of Kloosterman Sums Revisted (Y Motohashi); The LindelAf Class of L -Functions (K Murty); A Proof of the Riemann Hypothesis for the Weng Zeta Function of Rank 3 for the Rationals (M Suzuki); Elliptic Curves Arising from the Spectral Zeta Function for Non-Commutative Harmonic Oscillators and o 0 (4)-Modular Forms (K Kimoto & M Wakayama); A Geometric Approach to L -Functions (L Weng).
