Vancouver Art & Economies by Artspeak Gallery Pdf

Since the mid-1980s, the once marginal city of Vancouver has developed within a globalized economy and become an internationally recognized centre for contemporary visual art. Vancouver's status is due not only to a thriving worldwide cultural community that has turned to examine the so-called periphery, but to the city's growth, its artists, expanding institutions, and a strong history of introspection and critical assessment. As a result, Vancouver art is visible and often understood as distinct and definable. This anthology intends to complicate the notion of definability. It offers nine essays to address the organized systems that have affected contemporary art in Vancouver over the last two decades. The essays in Vancouver Art & Economies collectively remark, both compatibly and contradictorily, on the economies at work in Vancouver art--its historical, critical, and political engagement; its sites of cultural production; and its theoretical and practical intersection with technology or policy. Considering a selection of conditions, focuses, and resources within the community, Vancouver Art & Economies marks shifting ideologies and perspectives on art, politics, society, and capital in Vancouver. Contributors: Clint Burnham, Randy Lee Cutler, Tim Lee, Sadira Rodrigues, Marina Roy Sharla Sava, Reid Shier, Shepherd Steiner, and Michael Turner.

Economic Impact of the Arts by Anthony J. Radich,National Conference of State Legislatures Pdf

This book represents a collection of 7 works by authors arguing for the support of public spending on the arts: (1) "Introduction: The Value of Economic Reasoning and the Arts" (Harry Hillman-Chartrand), examines the changing social perception of the arts over time, and describes the interaction among the sectors of the arts; (2) "Arts Impact Studies: A Fashionable Excess" (Bruce A. Seaman), questions the theory underlying studies that measure primary spending associated with art activities for the arts are seen as having an important role in local economic development by improving the social infrastructure of communities and by enhancing the quality of human capitol within a region, a role which is not quantitatively measurable; (3) "Economic Impact Studies of the Arts as Effective Advocacy" (Anthony J. Radich and Sonja K. Foss), explores the ways in which five illustrative economic impact studies were tools of effective advocacy for the arts by achieving communication between arts advocates and representatives of business and government; (4) "Improving the Design and Policy Relevance of Art Impact Studies: A Review of the Literature" (David Cwi), reviews impact studies in 16 states, discussing the terms of reference and content of those studies faulting the typical study as doing less to assist its sponsors in arts policymaking than such studies could; (5) "The Role of the Arts in State and Local Economic Development" (R. Leo Penne and James L. Shanahan), indicates that, in the postindustrial society, the arts are amenities that attract and retain talented people, foster the spirit of innovation and adventure, convey a positive city image, and thus are real contributors to local economic development; (6) "Evaluating Cultural Policy through Benefit/Cost Analysis" (William S. Hendon), advocates and describes procedures for explicit and quantified cost benefit analysis; and (7) "Economic Structure and Impact of the Arts: Comparison with the Nonarts" (James H. Gapinski), completes the selection of articles with the common message that the arts have a pervasive, positive effect on local economies. A glossary, a bibliography, and a section about the authors follow. The book is indexed by subject, name, and studies cited. (MM)

World Film Locations: Vancouver by Rachel Walls Pdf

World Film Locations: Vancouver highlights the work of such Canadian filmmakers who have received less attention than they merit, whilst bringing insight into how so-called ‘runaway’ productions from Hollywood use Vancouver to stand in for other locations, from Seattle, USA to Lagos, Nigeria. Analyses of 38 different film scenes reveal the cinematic city in its myriad forms, while spotlight essays provide insight into the creativity and contradictions of Vancouver’s film industry throughout the ages. The essays examine the following topics: the masking of Vancouver’s indigenous stories in filmic representations of the city; Australian screenwriter James Clavell’s Vancouver-set debut The Sweet and the Bitter; Sylvia Spring’s Madeleine Is..., the first female-directed feature in Canada; Jonathan Kaplan’s The Accused, for which Jodie Foster won an Oscar; and, the use of Vancouver locations in a number of US television crime series. World Film Locations: Vancouver offers new perspectives on the west coast city and in doing so sheds further light upon the relationship between the movies and the metropolis.

The Vancouver Carts by Anonim Pdf

Artist Kelly Wood began photographing the city of Vancouver's "cart culture" in 2004-2005, documenting the urban phenomena of repurposed shopping carts used by Vancouver's homeless population and enterprising "binners" (street workers involved in underground economies such as collecting recyclables). Over the next six years she found and shot more than 100 carts and their multifarious contents to produce a series of large-scale photographs emblematic of the conjoined realities of homelessness and ongoing gentrification in her home city. The Vancouver Carts: Photographs by Kelly Wood concentrates on this singular body of work accompanied by several essays that explore issues of property and ownership, the changing nature of the urban as polarities of wealth increase, material culture and our implication with socio-economic systems via the symbol of the shopping cart. Rooted in the context of the Vancouver art world, The Vancouver Carts series also highlights the physical and social proximity of the art world to the places and people in the city that are affected by gentrification, while simultaneously placing the labour of the artist in comparison with that of workers of this underground refuse economy. Wood belongs to the post-Vancouver School generation of artists, whose work came to prominence in dialogue with that of Jeff Wall, Stan Douglas, Ken Lum and Rodney Graham. Wood's work has been broadly exhibited in Canada at the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography; the Art Gallery of Ontario; The Power Plant; the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal; the Vancouver Art Gallery; and the Morris and Helen Belkin Gallery. Her work has been shown internationally at the Akademie der Kuenste, Berlin; Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerpen, Antwerp; Fotoinstituut, Rotterdam; and Artspace in Sydney, Australia. Why Gender Matters in Economics by Mukesh Eswaran Pdf

An economic way of thinking about the gender issues confronting women around the world Gender matters in economics—for even with today's technology, fertility choices, market opportunities, and improved social norms, economic outcomes for women remain markedly worse than for men. Drawing on insights from feminism, postmodernism, psychology, evolutionary biology, Marxism, and politics, this textbook provides a rigorous economic look at issues confronting women throughout the world—including nonmarket scenarios, such as marriage, family, fertility choice, and bargaining within households, as well as market areas, like those pertaining to labor and credit markets and globalization. Mukesh Eswaran examines how women’s behavioral responses in economic situations and their bargaining power within the household differ from those of men. Eswaran then delves into the far-reaching consequences of these differences in both market and nonmarket domains. The author considers how women may be discriminated against in labor and credit markets, how their family and market circumstances interact, and how globalization has influenced their lives. Eswaran also investigates how women have been empowered through access to education, credit, healthcare, and birth control; changes in ownership laws; the acquisition of suffrage; and political representation. Throughout, Eswaran applies sound economic analysis and new modeling approaches, and each chapter concludes with exercises and discussion questions. This textbook gives readers the necessary tools for thinking about gender from an economic perspective. Addresses economic issues for women throughout the world, in both developed and developing countries Looks at both market and nonmarket domains Requires only a background in basic economic principles Includes the most recent research on the economics of gender in a range of areas Concludes each chapter with exercises and discussion questions
