Veiled Mysteries of Egypt and the Religion of Islam by Simon Henry Leeder Pdf

This Western apologist for Islam claims that no writings on Mohammedanism are "more misleading than those of missionaries," especially those published in recent years. Their writings are said to be cruel and relentless attacks on Islam. This book is a sympathetic study and appreciation of the high ideals and motives of Mohammed and his followers, and consists of four parts: a description of Moslem life in town and village, some reflections and observations in the mosques, a book on the great feasts and festivals, and, finally, the great questions of Islam as interpreted through the Moslems themselves. The book is well written and makes interesting reading, even where those who know Islam can not agree with the author's conclusions.

Veiled Mysteries of Egypt and the Religion of Islam (Classic Reprint) by S. H. Leeder Pdf

Excerpt from Veiled Mysteries of Egypt and the Religion of Islam There has always been a veil of mystery over the religion of Islam, from its very first days. The mockery of the Jews stung the early Moslems, who sprang from a people keenly sensitive to ridicule, as they are even now. The bitterest sayings of the Prophet were excited by those who scoffed at the religious exercises of himself and his followers. Veiled Mysteries of Egypt and the Religion of Islam by S. H.

It was mockery that led Mohammed to enjoin secrecy for much of the liturgical worship of his people, and possibly had something to do with the order to seal Arabia, and the Holy Cities of Medina and Mecca especially, against all men of a different faith. It is the fear of mockery which closes the most sacred places of Islam to this day, a fear which in some places engenders a fanatical resentment against the prying of strangers. Secrecy has told against a proper understanding of the practices of this religion. An almost invulnerable reticence on the part of its adherents has led the casual or unsympathetic observer into mistaken judgments, or has left those in deep ignorance of the truth, who, dealing with a franker people, would, by residence amongst them, have become familiar with the views and practices of their neighbours. It is a rare thing in Egypt, for instance, to find anything more than a superficial knowledge of Islam on the part of European residents. Centenary of Maulana Muhammad Ali’s English Translation of the Quran by Zahid Aziz Pdf

This booklet is compiled at the centenary of the publication, in 1917 in England, of the English translation and commentary of the Quran by Maulana Muhammad Ali — the first such work by a Muslim to be printed and published in the West, the first such work by a Muslim to be widely available in the world. It recounts the history of how the Maulana carried out this unprecedented project, its publication and the reviews it received. Its influence on later translations is discussed in detail. Maulana Muhammad Ali’s thorough revision of it to produce the 1951 edition, is then covered. Information is also provided about editions produced after his death.

Egyptian Belly Dance in Transition by Heather D. Ward Pdf

Raqs sharqi, the Egyptian dance form also known as belly dance, has for generations captured imaginations around the globe. Yet its origins have been obscured by misinformation and conjecture, rooted in Orientalist attitudes about the Middle East--a widely accepted narrative suggests the dance was created in response to Western influences and desires. Drawing on an array of primary sources, the author traces the early development of raqs sharqi in the context of contemporary trends in Egyptian arts and entertainment. The dance is revealed to be a hybrid cultural expression, emerging with the formation of Egyptian national identity at the end of the 19th century, when Egypt was occupied by the British.

Islam in India by Ja'far Sharif Pdf

First published in 1832, this work was at the time considered an authoritative account of the beliefs and practices of the Musalmᾱns of India. This 1921 reprint includes an introduction from the editor, Dr William Crooke, which presents what is known about both Ja’far Sharif and the translator, G. A. Herklots. It also distinguishes the original material from the changes made by the translator and compares the book with other similar works published in the nineteenth-century. This book will be of interest to those studying the history of Islam, the history of ethnography and the British Empire.
