Veiled Mysteries of Egypt and the Religion of Islam (Classic Reprint) by S. H. Leeder Pdf

Excerpt from Veiled Mysteries of Egypt and the Religion of Islam There has always been a veil of mystery over the religion of Islam, from its very first days. The mockery of the Jews stung the early Moslems, who sprang from a people keenly sensitive to ridicule, as they are even now. The bitterest sayings of the Prophet were excited by those who scoffed at the religious exercises of himself and his followers. Veiled Mysteries of Egypt and the Religion of Islam by Simon Henry Leeder Pdf

This Western apologist for Islam claims that no writings on Mohammedanism are "more misleading than those of missionaries," especially those published in recent years. Their writings are said to be cruel and relentless attacks on Islam. This book is a sympathetic study and appreciation of the high ideals and motives of Mohammed and his followers, and consists of four parts: a description of Moslem life in town and village, some reflections and observations in the mosques, a book on the great feasts and festivals, and, finally, the great questions of Islam as interpreted through the Moslems themselves. The book is well written and makes interesting reading, even where those who know Islam can not agree with the author's conclusions.

Veiled Mysteries of Egypt and the Religion of Islam by S. H.

It was mockery that led Mohammed to enjoin secrecy for much of the liturgical worship of his people, and possibly had something to do with the order to seal Arabia, and the Holy Cities of Medina and Mecca especially, against all men of a different faith. It is the fear of mockery which closes the most sacred places of Islam to this day, a fear which in some places engenders a fanatical resentment against the prying of strangers. Secrecy has told against a proper understanding of the practices of this religion. An almost invulnerable reticence on the part of its adherents has led the casual or unsympathetic observer into mistaken judgments, or has left those in deep ignorance of the truth, who, dealing with a franker people, would, by residence amongst them, have become familiar with the views and practices of their neighbours. It is a rare thing in Egypt, for instance, to find anything more than a superficial knowledge of Islam on the part of European residents. Excerpt from The Religion of Ancient Egypt Ptolemies and early Roman emperors rebuilt the temples on the old lines, and allowed themselves to be depicted in the dress of the Pharaohs, making offerings to gods whose very names they could not have pronounced, it was all felt to be but a sham, a dressing up, as it were, in the clothes of a religion out of which all the spirit and life had fled. The Egyptian Conception of Immortality (Classic Reprint) by George Andrew Reisner Pdf

Excerpt from The Egyptian Conception of Immortality It is clear that a religion Of such duration must have Offered some Of those consolations to man that have marked all great religions, chief Of which is the faith in a spirit, in some thing that preserves the personality Of the man and does not perish with the body. This faith was, in fact, one Of the chief elements in the Egyptian religion, - the element best known to us through the endless cemeteries which fill the desert from one end Of Egypt to the other, and through the funerary inscriptions. Modern Sons of the Pharaohs by Simon Henry Leeder Pdf

This interesting study of the Copts deserves attention. The Copts are the descendants of the ancient Egyptians, though many of them show a strain of Syrian or Jewish blood, and the Coptic church preserves in a somewhat debased form the primitive Christianity of the fourth century when it parted from Rome and Constantinople. Through the ages the Copts have preserved their faith and their customs; they form about a tenth of the population of Egypt and play a leading part in commerce. This study of the manners and customs of the Copts is notable for its comprehensive and scholarly handling of the subject, for grace of style and rich, descriptive backgrounds.

Orientalism, Postmodernism and Globalism by Professor Bryan S Turner Pdf

It is often thought that the development of capitalism and the modernization of culture have brought about a profound decline of religious belief and commitment. The history of Christianity in the last two decades appears to be a good illustration of this general process of secularization with the undermining of belief and commitment as Western cultures became industrial and urban. However, in the twentieth century we have seen that Islam continues to be a dominant force in politics and culture not only in the Orient but in Western society. In this challenging study of contemporary social theory, Bryan Turner examines the recent debate about orientalism in relation to postmodernism and the process of globalization. He provides a profound critique of many of the leading fissures in classical orientalism. His book also considers the impact of the notion of the world in sociological theory. These cultural changes and social debates also reflect important change in the status and position of intellecuals in modern culture who are threatened, not only by the levelling of mass culture, but also by the new opportunities posed by postmodernism. He takes a critical view of the role of sociology in these developments and raises important questions about the global role of English intellectuals as a social stratum. Bryan Turner's ability to combine these discussions about religion, politics, culture and intellectuals represents a remarkable integration of cultural analysis in cultural studies.
