The people of the Mountain State, young and old, may well be proud of their p making the world safe for Democracy - whether serving at home, foreign soil, upon the seven seas, or with the winds and the clou in the air. History Eastern Vermont (Classic Reprint) by Benjamin H. Hall Pdf

Excerpt from History Eastern Vermont When, six years ago, I began to make researches for the purpose of ascertaining at what time the first settlements were made in Vermont, on the banks of the Connecticut river, by the whites, it was my intention, if I put pen to paper, to write but a small book, and to treat only of the southeastern portions of the state. As I continued my investigations, I became convinced that it would be very difficult to carry out this plan in an intelligible manner, without introducing into my contemplated work much that would appear too general for its narrow limits. At the same time, I discovered that the disputes in which New York, New Hampshire, and Vermont were so long engaged respecting the jurisdiction of the latter state, exerted an influence at the time, which told on the progress and development of every town and village and hamlet in Vermont. I then sought for some publication containing a clear and full statement of these disputes. My search was unrewarded. I found that the Natural and Civil History of Vermont, by the learned Dr. Samuel Williams, was more particularly devoted to the discussion of questions of a scientific nature, and to a general account of the condition of the northern frontier of the United States, than to a specific description of the settlement and growth of Vermont. I found that the Natural and Political History of the State of Vermont, prepared by Col. Ira Allen, while in London, and printed at a London press, abounded in inaccuracies, and was only minute in the narration of affairs with which the author had been connected. I found that the Descriptive Sketch of the Present State of Vermont, by Dr. John Andrew Graham, was little else than a collection of unreliable, gossiping, entertaining letters, written more for self-gratification than to subserve any worthy or permanent interest. Early History of Vermont, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint) by La Fayette Wilbur Pdf

Excerpt from Early History of Vermont, Vol. 2 IN the first volume Of this work but little was said about the physical state and natural scenery of Vermont in its early days. It will be well to devote the first chapter of the second volume to those and kindred features of the State. Its situation is between 42 degrees 44 minutes, and 45 degrees Of north latitude, and between 3 degrees 31 minutes, and 5 degrees and 24 minutes east longitude from Washington, and situated about eighty miles from any part of the ocean. The width of the State at its southern extremity is about forty miles, while the line of the northern end of the State, running from Connecticut River to Lake Champlain, is ninety miles long. The length of the State running the course of Connec ticut River, the western bank of which is the east ern boundary of the State, is about 215 miles. The northern line Of the State runs on a parallel Of 45 degrees north latitude, and was surveyed in 1772; the south line was surveyed in 1741. Men of Vermont by Jacob G. Ullery Pdf

Excerpt from Men of Vermont: An Illustrated Biographical History of Vermonters and Sons of Vermont My first idea as to this work was that it should be made up of biographical sketches and portraits of living Vermonters and Sons of Vermont who had attained prominence in the political, professional and industrial affairs of their communities; and thus, through her most striking personalities, bring out the record of that sturdy and aggressive Vermont character (for, be it remembered, the Green Hills of Vermont have developed a distinct character) which has made the state famous as the birthplace and home of a nation's great men. No native of any other state has reason to be prouder of his state than a Vermonter. Such a work had never been attempted; the only previous effort in these lines con fined itself to a few only of the leaders, thus leaving, practically, an unexplored field, and one rich in material and valuable historically. As the work progressed and possibilities unfolded, the suggestion was adopted that it should not be limited to men now living, but that it might be made of historic value and interest, in certain lines, by including those who were leaders in the founding of the state, and those who had been its Governors, its Senators and its Representatives in Congress, and its Judges, since its first struggles for admission to the Union, when it was a little independent republic. In the preparation of this portion of the work I have endeavored to secure the assistance of the men best adapted to treat the subjects under consideration, and how well this judgment was founded my readers shall decide. That it could not have been made to include all who have, in past generations, made a record honorable to themselves and the state, is to me a matter of regret, but also of necessity, as to cover the whole field would require a life's work. As illustration is a demand of the times and contributes so much to the understanding of biography, it has been made a prominent feature in all departments of this work, and wherever possible I have embellished each sketch with an engraving of the subject. The History of Vermont with Descriptions, Physical and Topographical (Classic Reprint) by Rev Hosea Beckley Pdf

Excerpt from The History of Vermont With Descriptions, Physical and Topographical The Rev. Hosea Beckley, for many years a distinguished clergyman of this state, was the author of the following work, which he had nearly prepared for the press, some two years since, and had obtained a large list of subscribers for the book, when he was suddenly arrested by death - leaving no other patrimony to his bereaved family but this work in manuscript, upon which he had bestowed years of labor, and which is now published for the benefit of his widow. The work is given entire as it was left by Mr. Beckley, the publisher not deeming himself authorized to alter the manuscript from the condition in which it was left by the author. The only thing done, except copying for the press, has been in one or two instances, to bring the narrative down to the close of the last year; and to arrange the chapters in the order, in which the subjects treated of in them seemed to require, as they were left by Mr. Beckley, owing probably to his sudden demise, without being numbered, or placed in their proper order. Nature and Culture in the Northern Forest by Pavel Cenkl Pdf

Nearly 30 million acres of the Northern Forest stretch across New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Within this broad area live roughly a million residents whose lives are intimately associated with the forest ecosystem and whose individual stories are closely linked to the region’s cultural and environmental history. The fourteen engaging essays in Nature and Culture in the Northern Forest effectively explore the relationships among place, work, and community in this complex landscape. Together they serve as a stimulating introduction to the interdisciplinary study of this unique region. Each of the four sections views through a different lens the interconnections between place and people. The essayists in “Encounters” have their hiking boots on as they focus on personal encounters with flora and fauna of the region. The energizing accounts in “Teaching and Learning” question our assumptions about education and scholarship by proposing invigorating collaborations between teachers and students in ways determined by the land itself, not by the abstractions of pedagogy. With the freshness of Thoreau’s irreverence, the authors in “Rethinking Place” look at key figures in the forest’s literary and cultural development to help us think about the affiliations between place and citizenship. In “Nature as Commodity,” three essayists consider the ways that writers from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries thought about nature as a product and, thus, how their conclusions bear on the contemporary retailing of place. The writers in Nature and Culture in the Northern Forest reveal the rich affinities between a specific place and the literature, thought, and other cultural expressions it has nurtured. Their insightful and stimulating connections exemplify adventurous bioregional thinking that encompasses both natural and cultural realities while staying rooted in the particular landscape of some of the Northeast’s wildest forests and oldest settlements.
