Vietnam ANZACs by Kevin Lyles Pdf

The part played by Australian and New Zealand troops in the Vietnam War (1955-1975) is sometimes overlooked; but it is generally accepted that the 'Diggers' and 'Kiwis' were among the most effective and professional troops involved. Drawing upon the ANZACs' long experience in the jungles of South East Asia, the men of the Task Force used their expertise in patrol tactics to great effect to frustrate Viet Cong operations. Meanwhile the ANZACs' small and isolated adviser teams spent ten years passing on their skills all over South Vietnam, and in the process four were awarded the supreme decoration for valour - the Victoria Cross. This book pays tribute to their military prowess, and describes and illustrates their uniforms and equipment in unprecedented detail.

ANZACS VIETNAM 1965-1971 by Tony Howell Pdf

This book is a commentary on the ANZAC forces involvement in the second Indo-China (Vietnam) War during the period 1965 to 1971. Their actual involvement as ANZACs in Vietnam, started in 1965 with the deployment of 1 RAR (Australia) and 161 Battery (New Zealand) to Vietnam in support of the 173rd Airborne Brigade based in Bien Hoa. It wasn't until the 1st March 1968 that the first ANZAC Battalion was created in Nui Dat, comprising 2 RAR, Victor 2 Company and Whiskey 3 Company. From that point on, the ANZAC Battalions were based in sequence on: 4 RAR, 6 RAR, 2 RAR and 4 RAR. The merging of Australian and New Zealand soldiers was as seamless as it was in Egypt in 1914. In that year, the 'Australian and New Zealand Army Corps' was created when the Australian Imperial Force and the New Zealand Expeditionary Force were placed under command of Lieutenant General William Birdwood in Egypt. The two nations landed on Gallipoli on the 25th April 1915 as ANZACs. Their achievements at Chunuk Bair and Lone Pine Ridge are now legendary, cemented in our mutually proud ANZAC history. ANZAC Soldiers in Vietnam is a history recognising the contribution of our ANZAC forces during the Vietnam War, particularly the part the New Zealand Rifle Companies played. The proud reputation of the original ANZACs was upheld during this most unpopular and brutal war. The fact that much of the fighting was in the jungle fastness says a great deal for our soldier's courage and professionalism. Their stoicism when facing the constant threat of M16 mines is beyond belief. Their courage in the face-to-face encounters with the finest VC and NVA units in the Province is not in doubt. In the First Australian Task Force it was difficult to identify Australian from New Zealand and Regular force from National service soldiers. These soldiers answered their Governments call and did their Nations proud. The book is written in the same style as Tony's first book, Jungle Green Shadows published by John Douglas Publishing in 2019. It is easy to understand with clear explanations of military terms. There are maps and explanations to help the reader make sense of the many battles fought in Phuoc Tuy Province and the northern border areas. Best of all, there are hundreds of photos that reflect the camaraderie and one-ness of these gallant young men. The book is not a glorification of war nor does it seek to make a political statement about 'that War'. It simply tells the story of our ANZAC soldiers in Vietnam: 1965 to 1971.

Vietnam Infantry Tactics by Gordon L. Rottman Pdf

This book reveals the evolving US, Viet Cong and NVA tactics at battalion level and below throughout the Vietnam War. Beginning with a description of the terrain, climate and the unique nature of operations in this theatre of war, the author, a Vietnam veteran himself, goes on to explain how unit organisation was broken down by combatant forces and the impact this had on the kind of tactics they employed. In particular, the author highlights how units were organised in reality on the battlefield as opposed to their theoretical tables of organisation. US tactics included the standard US tactical doctrine as prescribed by several field manuals and in which leaders and troops were rigourously trained. But it also reveals how many American units developed innovative small unit tactics specifically tailored to the terrain and enemy practices. In contrast, this book also reveals the tactics employed by Viet Cong and NVA units including their own Offensive Operations, Reconnaissance, Movement Formations and Security, and Ambushes.

Vietnam War Booby Traps by Gordon L. Rottman Pdf

During the Vietnam War, the Viet Cong were frequently unable to hold their own in stand-up fights against US and allied forces who were superior in strength, firepower, mobility, and logistics. They relied instead on traditional guerrilla warfare tactics including small-scale hit- and-run attacks, ambushes, terrorist actions, and precision attacks against bases. These included one of the oldest of guerrilla weapons – the boobytrap. Booby traps could be made in large numbers in village workshops and jungle camps using locally available materials as well as modern munitions. The VC were adept at making booby traps 'invisible' in the varied terrain of Vietnam, often emplacing them in locations and surroundings totally unexpected by their enemies. Booby traps could be incredibly simple or startlingly complex and ingenious, ranging from pointed sticks to command-detonated submerged floating river mines. Besides a wide variety of booby traps, they also used land and water mines, both contact/pressure-detonated and command-detonated. Between January 1965 and June 1970 11 percent of US troop deaths in action and 17 percent of injuries were by caused booby traps and mines. This fascinating title explores not only the wide variety of booby traps employed by the Viet Cong, but also their various uses in halting, stalling, or locating an enemy, and the many evolutions these traps underwent in order to retain the element of surprise. Written by a Vietnam veteran with first-hand experience of such traps, this is an engaging look at one of the most frightening aspects of guerrilla warfare.

A Soldier's View of the Vietnam War by Australia. Australian Army. Royal Australian Regiment. Battalion, 6RAR/NZ (ANZAC). Victor Company,V4 Family Trust Pdf

It is rare that a military history is written from the perspective of the soldier, by the soldier. This book is one of those. It is written by the officers and men of Victor 4 Company, New Zealanders who served in the Vietnam War from 1969 - 1970 who tell about their experiences in combat in a faraway land. We have written the book not to celebrate war but to tell the next generation about what we experienced. It is right we should do this for our children and for our relatives and friends so that they may know what we did. It is a testament also to those seven comrades who gave their lives for their country. May they rest in peace for eternity.

The Ottoman Defence Against the ANZAC Landing - 25 April 1915 by Mesut Uyar Pdf

The landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 represents a defining moment, not only for Australia and New Zealand, but also for Turkey. However a detailed account of the landing from the Turkish perspective has yet to be published in English despite the 100 years that has elapsed since the first ANZACs scrambled ashore. Descriptions of the Ottoman forces such as the composition of units, the men who commanded them, their weapons, capabilities and reactions to the ANZAC invasion have generally remained undocumented or described in piecemeal fashion based on secondary sources. The lack of a Turkish perspective has made it almost impossible to construct a balanced account of the events of that fateful April day. The Ottoman Defence against the Anzac Landing: 25 April 1915 seeks to redress this imbalance, portraying the Ottoman experience based on previously unpublished Ottoman and Turkish sources. This meticulously researched volume describes the Ottoman Army in fascinating detail from its order of battle, unit structure and composition, training and doctrine to the weapons used against the ANZACs. Using Ottoman military documents, regimental war diaries, personal accounts and memoirs, author Mesut Uyar describes the unfolding campaign, unravelling its complexity and resolving many of the questions that have dogged accounts for a century. This valuable chronicle will enhance readers’ understanding of the Ottoman war machine, its strengths and weaknesses and why it proved so successful in containing the Allied invasion. Detailed maps and photographs published for the first time add clarity and portray many of the men the ANZACs referred to with grudging respect as ‘Johnny Turk’.

Jungle Green Shadows by Tony Howell Pdf

The New Zealand Government ordered the deployment of combat forces to Vietnam in 1965 to join Australia and other Allies engaged in that War. Victor 2 Rifle Company arrived in Vietnam on 12 November 1967 and left on 13 May 1968. Major Brian Worsnop was the commander, and the author, Lieutenant Tony Howell, was one of the Platoon Commanders. Jungle Green Shadows is a very important historical record of Victor 2 Company's participation in New Zealand's most unpopular war. What is fascinating is how Tony has managed to weave the thoughts and experiences of so many surviving Company soldiers into this factual account. As a result it reads more like an educational novel than a history book. There is one chapter that deals with a typical day in the life of a Lead Scout, a tense and thought-provoking look at how these young men cared for themselves and each other. The reader may find the Scout's contact with two Viet Cong too graphically described - but it is indicative of what these young men were asked to do. The Company was deployed to Vietnam during the most violent period of the Vietnam War - the Tet Offensive. If you had any questions about how this Rifle Company became a legend, this book will provide the answers. The defining hours for Victor 2 Company were when they were attacked and surrounded by a Battalion of Viet Cong on 7 February 1968. For several hours the Company fought off the attackers, initially without artillery or air support. The book is not all combat action, however, although there is enough of that there. Tony deals thoroughly with the battlefield stress and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) issues that arose from being constantly in the front line. He is very sympathetic in the way he covers these stress issues and their effects on families and, in turn, their children. Tony brings to light the brutality of the Hanoi regime and the huge toll they inflicted on their own people, both during the War and after the Allies withdrew from Vietnam in 1972. It is not pleasant reading of assassination squads and 're-education camps' but that was the reality behind the bamboo curtain. He even follows the re-education fate of three key Phuoc Tuy Province officials who were in office during the time Victor 2 Company was in Vietnam. The real value of this book is that, while it may have been written for the families of the Victor 2 Company soldiers, the author's easy flowing style will appeal to all New Zealanders. This book is well-researched and the sources are all identified. Jungle Green Shadows is a must for Vietnam Veterans, families, schools, stress counsellors, amateur or professional military historians and researchers on the Vietnam War.
