Vision 2050 by Hiroshi Komiyama,Steven Kraines Pdf

Hiroshi Komiyama's "Vision 2050" is a plan for paving a road to global sustainability. It lays out a path to a sustainable future for humanity that could realistically be achieved by 2050 through the application of science and technology. A prominent Japanese academic and leader in global sustainability, Komiyama draws upon realistic assumptions and solid scientific concepts to create a vision that makes the living standards enjoyed by developed countries today possible for all people by 2050. "Vision 2050" is built upon three fundamental principles – increased energy efficiency, recycling, and development of renewable energy sources – and the book argues for the technological potential of all three. Specifically, Komiyama envisions a three-fold increase in overall energy efficiency and a doubling of renewable energy resources by 2050. "Vision 2050: Roadmap for a Sustainable Earth" is written to address the concerned citizen as well as to inspire an exchange of ideas among experts, policy makers, industrial leaders, and the general public.

Beyond the Limits to Growth by Hiroshi Komiyama Pdf

At a time when contemporary challenges seem to many to be insurmountable, this book offers an optimistic view of the future and provides a road map for societies to get there. Drawing upon extensive research and many years as a thought leader in environmental and sustainability issues in Japan and internationally, Hiroshi Komiyama analyzes the most pressing challenges to the attainment of sustainability of economically advanced nations and argues forcefully for Japan to lead them out of the present dilemma through active promotion of creative consumer and societal demand. He shows how an active industry–government–academic partnership can provide the environment needed to promote such new creative demand and illustrates its potential through presentation of a Platinum Society Network that was launched on a regional basis in Japan in 2010 to facilitate the solution of common issues through the exchange of information and ideas. What is perhaps most surprising about the text is its unwavering optimism supported by hard evidence, history, and insightful observation. Problems arising from new paradigms of the 21st century (what the author refers to as “exploding knowledge, limited Earth resources, and aging societies“) thwart sustainable development in advanced and developing countries alike. All countries will struggle with issues that evolve from these paradigms including diminishing resources, expanding budget deficits, and growing global environmental problems. This window on potential practical pathways and solutions should be of interest to all those engaged in seeking ways to meet these contemporary challenges.

Innovation, Economic Development, and Intellectual Property in India and China by Kung-Chung Liu,Uday S. Racherla Pdf

This open access book analyses intellectual property codification and innovation governance in the development of six key industries in India and China. These industries are reflective of the innovation and economic development of the two economies, or of vital importance to them: the IT Industry; the film industry; the pharmaceutical industry; plant varieties and food security; the automobile industry; and peer production and the sharing economy. The analysis extends beyond the domain of IP law, and includes economics and policy analysis. The overarching concern that cuts through all chapters is an inquiry into why certain industries have developed in one country and not in the other, including: the role that state innovation policy and/or IP policy played in such development; the nature of the state innovation policy/IP policy; and whether such policy has been causal, facilitating, crippling, co-relational, or simply irrelevant. The book asks what India and China can learn from each other, and whether there is any possibility of synergy. The book provides a real-life understanding of how IP laws interact with innovation and economic development in the six selected economic sectors in China and India. The reader can also draw lessons from the success or failure of these sectors.

Country Partnership Strategy for India for the Period 2013-2017 by World Bank Pdf

"India is uniquely placed to help reduce global poverty and boost shared prosp rity. While the country has achieved encouraging results in recent years in tackling these dual challenges, it remains home to one-third of the world's poor, as well as the largest number of people who have recently escaped poverty but are still vulnerable to falling bacl,<. India is now in the midst of an important transition, casting off its long-held status as a developing nation to emerge as a new leader in the international economic arena. Strong support for the country at this crucial juncture can help bend the arc of history by accelerating the decline in poverty both in India and the world. India's ongoing transformation calls for a new phase in its long-standing partnership with World Bank Group (WBG). The new Country Partnership Strategy (FY2013-17) between India and the WBG responds by setting out a program of support- from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), International Development Association (IDA), International Finance Corporation (IFC), and Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA} that seeks to develop transformational and innovative solutions to tackle the country's most pressing development challenges, especially in the poorest, least developed, and most isolated of its states. A more pronounced focus on India's low-income states (Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh) and on urbanization are haUmarks of this new phase of partnership, and represents a key strategic shift in the WBG's support to India's development. The strategy seeks to help India Jay the foundation for achieving a long-term vision for 2030- a vision of the nation as a global economic powerhouse where more and more people share the benefits of growth and where no more than 5.5 percent of the population lives in poverty and 41.3 percent of the population is no longer vulnerable to falling back. Key Elements of the World Bank Group Strategy To help achieve the vision for India in 2030 and contribute to its ongoing transformation, the WBG strategy focuses on three broad areas of engagement: integration, rural-urban transformation and inclusion. Improving domestic- as well as regional and global- integration is key to high, sustained growth, and accelerated poverty reduction. As India continues to transform from a largely rural, agrarian economy into an increasingly urbanized one, more emphasis will be needed on creating strong linkages between the urban and rural parts of the country. WBG will support efforts to help India and its people reap the benefits of urbanization while also improving agricultural productivity. A third area of support is to work in partnership to help foster the inclusion of all social and economic groups - regardless of age, gender, caste, or place of residence - thus ensuring that the benefits of faster economic growth touch the lives of all of India's people. All three areas of engagement will share a focus on improving governance, promoting environmental sustainability, and bolstering gender equality. World Bank Group Support Given the deep and complex challenges confronting a rapidly changing country, the strategy makes the case for continued high levels of support for India. Aware that WBG finances will always be modest compared to the task at hand, the strategy aims to leverage resources in creative ways that take into account the different strengths of India's states and regions, the entrepreneurial spirit of its people, the deep experience of civil society, and the convergence of better governance and social responsibility. To make a meaningful contribution to the assault on poverty, the volume of support from the WBG should be in the order of about $5 billion per year over the next five years. For the WBG's endeavors to be effective, actions will be required at the national level, at lower levels of government, as well as through partnerships with the private sector, civil society and development partners. The strategy is closely aligned with India's own vision for development outlined in the 12th Five-Year Plan (FY2013- 17), which calls for ""faster, sustainable, and more inclusive growth"". Lessons have been incorporated from the Group's long-term engagement in the country, and take into account learning from the previous strategy (FYi009-12) as well as inputs from experts across a broad spectrum of economic, social, and government sectors. The book brings out an encyclopaedic picture of the potential areas of transformative Indian agriculture through innovations in science, technology, institutional and policy affairs directed in building a self-reliant India (Atmanirbhar Bharat). The book has addressed the challenges to make India free from hunger, poverty and undernutrition, and suggested interventions with focus on all-inclusiveness and sustainability, peace and prosperity, and resilience to climate and other volatilities. Most of these propositions are analogous to the Sustainable Development Goals – Agenda 2030, which India has committed to achieve. The book especially covers critical needs for development on different fragile ecosystems such as coastal, desert, hill, ravine and other marginal ecosystems. Envisioning a positive future through design 2050: Designing Our Tomorrow describes the ways in which architecture and design can engage with the key drivers of change and provide affirmative aspirations for a not-so distant future. With a focal date of 2050, this issue of AD asks when and how the design community can, should, and must be taking action. The discussion centres on shifts in the urban environment and an established way of life in a world of depleted natural resources and climate change. Featuring interviews with Paola Antonelli of MoMA and Tim Brown of IDEO, it includes contributions from thought leaders, such as Janine Benyus, Thomas Fisher, Daniel Kraft, Alex McDowell, Franz Oswold, and Mark Watts. High-profile designers like FutureCitiesLab, SHoP, and UrbanThinkTank, are featured as examples of forward thinking and innovation in the field, highlighting the need for — and possibility of — a shift in the global perspective. The discussion includes the challenges we face in creating a positive tomorrow, and the solutions that architecture and design can bring to the table. Despite the proliferation of global crises possibly threatening human survival, our current moment provides the opportunity to write a new, positive story about our future. 2050: Designing Our Tomorrow describes how the design community can contribute to that vision by asserting positive aspirations for the worlds we create ourselves. See how architects and designers inspire global positive change Consider architecture's role in shaping cultural outlook Learn the key drivers of change for the built environment Explore the perspectives of leading experts and designers Architects and planners over the centuries have put a stamp upon the planet through the physical manifestations of their belief structures. Today's design community faces a rising wealth gap, climate change, shifting paradigms of nationalism, and myriad other challenges. 2050: Designing Our Tomorrow phrases global issues as a design problem, and describes how architects and designers can rise to the challenge of creating a more positive future.

Super Century by Raghav Bahl Pdf

What is it about the Indian psyche that makes us so incapable of fulfilling our promise as a nation? Why are we so averse to risk, resigned to mediocrity and mired in a collective lack of confidence? India has so much potential but seems forever stuck on the brink of actualization, unable to muster the political will and geo-economic force to clear the final bar. The stakes are higher than ever, and India's moment is now. But where should we turn first-to our troubles at home, or to the global challenges of terrorism, tyranny, ethnic conflict, mass migration, civil war and climate change? The fact is, India's foreign and domestic agendas are inextricably intertwined, and neither can advance without the other. They must be addressed simultaneously if we are to thrive as a nation; the world is moving too fast to allow us to deal with one set of problems before moving on to the next. We simply don't have that kind of time. In Super Century, Raghav Bahl offers a cogent and candid assessment of how we got where we are and a clear blueprint of what we need to do, both at home and in the world, to fulfil our promise going forward.
