Volume II: Low Enthalpy Geothermal Energy by Rajandrea Sethi,Alessandro Casasso Pdf

Low enthalpy geothermal energy has a great potential to reduce the climate impact of building heating and cooling systems. The use of this renewable energy source involves a number of scientific disciplines including energy engineering, heat transfer, geology, hydrogeology, chemistry, and economics. Low enthalpy geothermal energy, i.e., the underground heat available at temperatures below 90°C, has great potential in terms of reducing the climate impact of heating and cooling buildings. It can also be employed for other thermal uses, such as industrial processes, road de-icing, and bathing. The Special Issue “Volume II: Low Enthalpy Geothermal Energy” includes seven articles that discuss the topic from the following points of view: mapping of shallow geothermal potential, recent developments for enhancing the performance of borehole heat exchangers, exploitation of asphalt-covered surfaces for heating, measurement of the thermal conductivity of rocks and sediments, and performance monitoring of closed-loop and open-loop low enthalpy geothermal systems.

Low-Enthalpy Geothermal Resources for Power Generation by D. Chandrasekharam,Jochen Bundschuh Pdf

In many developing countries the exponentially growing electricity demand can be covered by using locally available, sustainable low-enthalpy geothermal resources (80-150 °C). Such low-enthalpy sources can make electricity generation more independent from oil imports or from the over-dependence on hydropower. Until now this huge energy resource has only been used by some developed countries like the USA, Iceland and New Zealand. The reason why low-enthalpy geothermal resources are not used for electricity generation is that there is still a misconception that low-enthalpy thermal fluids are fit only for direct application. The advancement of drilling technology, development of efficient heat exchangers and deployment of high sensitive binary fluids contribute to the useful application of this energy resource on a much wider scale. This book focuses on all aspects of low enthalpy geothermal thermal fluids. It will be an important source book for all scientists working on geothermal energy development. Specifically those involved in research in developing countries rich in such thermal resources, and for agencies involved in bilateral and international cooperation.

Potential of Low-Medium Enthalpy Geothermal Energy by Elisabet Palomo,Antonio Colmenar-Santos,Enrique Rosales-Asensio Pdf

This book highlights the importance of geothermal energy by studying its potential either alone or in combination with solar energy, focusing on its industrial application. Its starting point is to identify in a thorough and precise manner the barriers that hinder the implementation of geothermal energy in Spain and the European Union and the measures to be taken to achieve its diffusion and regular use. Next, the book looks at how geothermal energy could contribute to this sector and to the desalination industry in particular, analysing a specific case in the south of Spain and extrapolating its results to a set of existing desalination plants in the Spanish Mediterranean with really interesting results in terms of economic amortisation and CO2 emissions avoided to the atmosphere. Beyond the desalination industry, this work demonstrates that almost 85% of the industrial processes of all industry in Spain can be carried out with very low, low and medium temperature geothermal resources and even applies its results to a set of existing solar plants, comparing in economic terms the results already obtained with those that would have been obtained if geothermal energy had been applied.

Geothermics by G. Buntebarth Pdf

The constantly growing demand for energy, as well as the realization during the past decade that fossil energy reserves to satisfy ever increasing energy consumption are limited, have helped, as part of the search for alternative energy sources, to bring the subject of geothermics to its present level of significance. Practical geothermics is concerned with prospecting for and develop ment of geothermal heat. General geothermics deals with the thermal state of our Earth as a whole. Both divisions of this field, however, contribute practical insights, and improved methods of temperature esti mation have helped to give us a better picture of detailed thermal condi tions. It is difficult for readers interested in this field to obtain an overview from the numerous, specialized papers that have been written on geother mics. This book is meant to provide a thorough introduction to the subject, although the coverage is not exhaustive is detail. Geothermics is taught at universities and technical institutes, as part of the curriculum in geology. This introduction to geothermics is directed especially to students of geophysics and is meant to be used as a supple ment to their lectures. of this work must be given to my Special thanks for the completion teacher, Prof. Dr. O. ROSENBACH. His lectures in geophysics inspired my interest in geothermics, which is still my main research area.
