Selected Poems by D.R. Duncan Pdf

One day I was considering the tale of Sheherazade and the Arabian nights. How difficult would it be to write a thousand and one stories in a thousand and one nights, and keep my head. It took a lot of late nights and coffee, but the goal was accomplished. Then they had to be rewritten and winnowed down. Ray Bradbury is quoted as saying, “Write a short story every week. It’s not possible to write 52 bad short stories in a row”. I hope I haven’t proven Ray Bradbury wrong.

In the Dark Before Dawn: New Selected Poems by Thomas Merton,Lynn R. Szabo Pdf

A new, broad, comprehensive view of the innovative poetry of the late, great Trappist monk and religious philosopher Thomas Merton. Poet, Trappist monk, religious philosopher, translator, social criticthe late Thomas Merton was all these things. Until now, no selection from his great body of poetry has afforded a comprehensive view of his varied and largely innovative work. In the Dark Before Dawn: New Selected Poems of Thomas Merton is not only double the size of Merton's earlier Selected Poems (1967), it also arranges his poetry thematically and chronologically, so that readers can follow the poet's multifarious interrelated lines of thought as well as his poetic development over the decades, from his college days in the 1930s to his untimely accidental death in Bangkok in 1968 during his personal Eastern pilgrimage. The selections are grouped under eight thematic headings"Geography's Landscapes," "Poems from the Monastery," "Poems of the Sacred," "Songs of Contemplation," "History's Voices: Past and Present," "Engaging the World," "On Being Human," "Merton and Other Languages."

Collected Poems by Robert Garioch Pdf

Garioch's most well-known work is his satirical and humorous verse written in Scots, such as the Edinburgh Sonnets, Embro to the Ploy and The Canny Hen. These poems offer shrewd observations of the city and its inhabitants, and Garioch himself acknowledged the influence of another of Edinburgh's great poets, Robert Fergusson, in this respect. Garioch was also well-known as the translator into Scots of authors as disparate as Apollinaire, Pindar and the nineteenth-century Roman poet Guiseppe Belli, with whom he felt a particular affinity. He also wrote an autobiographical work, Two Men and a Blanket, in which he recounts his experiences as a prisoner-of-war in Italy and Germany in the 1940s. Towards the end of his life, he was Writer-in-Residence at Edinburgh University, and also worked as lexicographer and transcriber in the School of Scottish Studies, Edinburgh University. He died in 1981. This is the first major volume of Robert Garioch's poetry in over twenty years. Unlike the previous edition of his work (1983), it follows Garioch's own ordering of his poems, includes his own notes, as well as editorial explanations for readers unfamiliar with Garioch's Edinburgh background and

Get Real with Storytime by Julie Dietzel-Glair,Marianne Crandall Follis Ph.D. Pdf

This is a complete, year-long programming guide that shows librarians how to integrate nonfiction and poetry into storytime for preschool children in order to build literacy skills and overall knowledge. The right nonfiction titles—ones with colorful photographs and facts that are interesting to young imaginations—give librarians an opportunity to connect with children who are yearning for "true stuff." Presenting poetry in storytime encourages a love of language and the chance to play with words. Written by authors with a combined 25 years of experience working with children and books in a library setting, Get Real With Storytime: 52 Weeks of Early Literacy Programming goes far beyond the typical storytime resource book by providing books and great ideas for using nonfiction and poetry with preschool children. This book provides a complete, year-long programming guide for librarians who work with preschool children in public libraries and school librarians who run special programs for preschoolers as well as parents, childcare providers, and camp counselors. Each of the 52 broad storytime topics (one for each week of the year) includes a sample storytime featuring an opening poem; a nonfiction title; picture books; songs, rhymes, or fingerplays; and a follow-up activity. Early literacy tips that are based on the authors' extensive experience and the principles of Every Child Ready to Read (ECRR) are presented throughout the book.
