War Drama of the Eagles by Edward Fraser Pdf

The eagle of Napoleon was a potent symbol of military might, men fought and died to possess the “cou-cou” that his regiments carried into battle. It represented the fidelity of a regiment to the cause of the French Empire, and more particularly the attachment of the brave warriors who fought beneath it to the greatest general of the age. To lose an eagle was to lose the honour of the regiment, a stain that could not be removed apart from rare cases of exceptional service. Edward Fraser chronicles the history of the Napoleonic eagle standard and the men who fought under them and against them until the final demise of the Napoleonic era after Waterloo in 1815. Napoleon was well aware of how to stimulate the esprit de corps of his armies with symbols and continuing his innovation of giving distinct standards to specific regiments and recording battle honours on them from his time with the army of Italy, he decided on giving each battalion or squadron and eagle based on his own imperial insignia. The eagle of the battalion was the rallying point for the men in adversity, and a stimulant on the attack guiding the men toward their objective. Napoleon’s enemies knew the power and cachet of capturing such a standard and fought hard to capture them on battlefields ranging from Borodino outside Moscow to the hot plains outside Cadiz in Spain. Fraser was a prominent historian of the period having written a number of books on the great battle of Trafalgar and Wellington’s soldiers in the Peninsula. This work was written just before the outbreak of the First World War, with the Entente Cordiale in place, and is therefore more balanced than some of the earlier English works on the period which tended to a more anti-French view. The War Drama of the Eagles by Edward Fraser Pdf

The Eagles of the battlefields of the age of Napoleon The genius of Napoleon did not confine itself to his skill as a strategist and tactician on campaign or battlefield. He understood the nature of men, what motivated them and what symbols could drive them to the achievement of his own ambitions. He had embraced the symbolism of revolution himself and understood the powerful influence of the aspiration of equality and brotherhood for the proletariat. When his ambitions for the First Empire came to realisation, Napoleon looked to a new identity for the French nation equal to his personality and objectives. There could be no better example from which to draw inspiration or which to emulate than that of the eagle of Imperial Rome. This permeated every aspect of the culture of the Napoleonic epoch from clothing to furnishings to the fine arts and architecture, but nowhere was it more powerful than in its adoption by the armed forces. All knew of the significance of the Roman Eagles to the ancient legions. Men marched behind it, rallied to it, fought to protect it and died in its defence. In 1804 Napoleon-the new Caesar-introduced the eagle banner to his own regiments. As in ancient times these martial birds of prey, of pride and victory, came to represent the collective souls of the men who called them their own. This is the story of Napoleon's eagles; here are the campaigns and battles in which they were held high and accounts of what befell them there. This is a story of triumph and defeat, of tragedy and self sacrificing heroism. These are the standards that men fought to hold and died in the attempt to take. An essential book for all those interested in the wars of the Napoleonic age. Available in softcover and hardback with dust wrapper.

When the military sets up a naval base in town, Jed is hired to help out, honored it seems, for both his father's bravery and his own native skills as a hunter. Presented with a military jacket, Jed finds an allegiance to his country and a pride in his mixed heritage that he's never felt before. But one day Jed's world is shattered. His best friend Tadashi, along with the other members of the nearby Japanese village, are declared enemy aliens and told to prepare to leave their homes. Now Jed must ask himself where his allegiance really belongs...to his country's rigid code, or to the truth that is buried in his Tsimshian soul. War of the Eagles is the first of two books in a series. Book two is Caged Eagles.

When Football Went to War by Todd Anton,Bill Nowlin,Marv Levy Pdf

More than any other sport, professional football contributed fighting men to the battles of World War II, and the 22 or so players or former players that lost their lives are among the riveting stories told in this tribute to football's war heroes that spans many decades and military conflicts. The National Football League counts three Congressional Medal of Honor recipients among its honors, along with numerous Silver Stars, Distinguished Flying Crosses, and Purple Hearts. When Football Went to War offers a ground-breaking look at football—college and professional football alike—and many of the wartime heroes who came off the field of play to fight for their country. Detailed biographies of those who gave their lives are supplemented by many other stories of wartime heroism, from World War I through to Pat Tillman's tragic death in the Global War on Terrorism. Football has become the most popular sport in America and this heartfelt book honors the many sacrifices of NFL athletes over the years in service of their country.
