Wednesday's Cop by Joseph B. Geraci Pdf

The 1960s and 1970s were witness to social transformations that would permanently redefine the country. The assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the civil rights movement, riots and the landmark Supreme Court Miranda ruling had the greatest impact. These same transformations would also drastically change the complexion of law enforcement. Using his diary which was written over a period of eleven years, Dr. Geraci has provided a kaleidoscope of police experiences during this era in American history. Names have been changed and details altered to protect identities and locations. Some accounts are graphic and question the normalcy and sanity of human behavior. Veterans of law enforcement and the military will not be shocked. Rather, they will be reminded of the potentially horrific consequences of human actions. The science of police work has advanced significantly since the early 1960s and 1970s when there were limited resources, poor equipment and less than effective communications. The days and techniques before the Miranda ruling and DNA testing are gone. Training is extensive and officers are well-educated. The college graduate is more the rule than the exception. Human nature, however, has not changed and will continue to be the focus of law enforcement officers.

Wednesday’s Child by Carl Douglass Pdf

Wednesday's Child is the third novella of Carl Douglass's McGee series. It is a tale of “Wednesday's child is full of woe.” Brigid O'Hanlon--age thirteen--is one of the “Wednesday's Children”--a foundling left on the doorstep of St. Anne's Orphanage in Red Hook, New York. One of the few days she and her girl-friends can count is the grand and city-wide heralded celebration of their thirteenth birthday. Harm befalls them, and McGee and Associates are called to help save them on a pro bono basis. The search transcends city, then country boundaries, and then on the high seas. The Human Trafficking division of the NYPD is called into the search after bodies are found in the pestilent Gowanus Canal near a semi-trailer containing the bodies of victims of a human trafficking network run by the Snakeheads. The hunt for the girls and for the clever and heartless monsters who killed their vulnerable captives descends into an underworld of CIs, Mafiosos, crooked Teamsters, and child molesters, presided over by the ephemeral devil, Sister Chi. The combined resources of McGee, the NYPD task force, the New Jersey State Police, the FBI, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Navy, the CIA, and the Catholics of NYC, and The MSS and the PSB of the Peoples Republic of China join in an around-the-world and around-the-clock manhunt for the rust bucket ship, the Golden Traveler, and the kidnappers. It promises to be very close and dangerous thing.

Beyond the Usual Beating by Andrew S. Baer Pdf

The malign and long-lasting influence of Chicago police commander Jon Burge cannot be overestimated, particularly as fresh examples of local and national criminal-justice abuse continue to surface with dismaying frequency. Burge’s decades-long tenure on the Chicago police force was marked by racist and barbaric interrogation methods, including psychological torture, burnings, and mock executions—techniques that went far “beyond the usual beating.” After being exposed in 1989, he became a symbol of police brutality and the unequal treatment of nonwhite people, and the persistent outcry against him led to reforms such as the abolition of the death penalty in Illinois. But Burge hardly developed or operated in a vacuum, as Andrew S. Baer explores to stark effect here. He identifies the darkness of the Burge era as a product of local social forces, arising from a specific milieu beyond the nationwide racialized reactionary fever of the 1960s and 1970s. Similarly, the popular resistance movements that rallied in his wake actually predated Burge’s exposure but cohered with unexpected power due to the galvanizing focus on his crimes and abuses. For more than thirty years, a shifting coalition including torture survivors, their families, civil rights attorneys, and journalists helped to corroborate allegations of violence, free the wrongfully convicted, have Burge fired and incarcerated, and win passage of a municipal reparations package, among other victories. Beyond the Usual Beating reveals that though the Burge scandal underscores the relationship between personal bigotry and structural racism in the criminal justice system, it also shows how ordinary people held perpetrators accountable in the face of intransigent local power.

For Hire, Messenger of God by Art Burton,Burton Art Burton Pdf

Well-known and wealthy, Matthew Lane drives his cherry red Cadillac like he owns the road. Some would describe his compulsive driving as maniac. So when Lane's speeding car collides with a power pole, killing him instantly, it's likely that the incident is just another fatal traffic accident. Detective Sergeant Jim McDonald, a sixteen-year veteran policeman, is on the same road as Lane that day. The accident comes within a coat of paint of including him on the casualty list. As an eyewitness and first on the scene, McDonald senses there is something strange about the accident. These suspicions dominate his waking life in ways he doesn't believe possible. McDonald's misgivings are further confirmed with two subsequent car accidents. The first involves a victim intoxicated to the point that driving a car seems almost impossible. The second event shocks the detective with a case of now you see me, now you don't. McDonald must discover the evidence that links the three accidents before anyone else loses their life.
