The Gifts of Compassion by Sta Steindl Pdf

"In this beautifully written book, esteemed clinical psychologist and therapist Stan Steindl takes us on a personal journey into the ups and downs of what it is to be human and reveals both the challenges and the joys of building one’s compassionate mind.” — Professor Paul Gilbert OBE, Founder of Compassion Focused Therapy and bestselling author Life can be complicated. And sometimes, really very difficult. We may struggle with many common life challenges: in relationships, parenting, and work, just to name a few. We can end up suffering from stress, anxiety, and depression, or loneliness, isolation or shame. But did you know that a lot of that suffering comes from within? Rumination and self-criticism are uniquely human thought processes, developed over hundreds of thousands of years. Our brains evolved into an impressive and complex organ that helped us to survive a primitive world, and yet today may yell at us with harsh and hostile criticism, sometimes even over the smallest thing! In fact, critical self-talk is very common. And it flies just under the radar of our conscious mind — condemning and undermining us with its inner voice. This book will show you how to do better — to turn anguish into delight through the use of our Compassionate Self. Through a clear series of steps and practices, noted clinical psychologist Dr Stan Steindl explains how compassion evolved as a vital part of our nature and thought, and the way we look after one another, and even ourselves. He then shows how to use our compassion as a key to a healthier mental life. With personal vignettes illustrating the therapeutic benefits of compassion focused therapy, practical exercises that use mindfulness and imagery to help us develop attention to the present moment, and a wealth of guidance on self-criticism, shame and forgiveness, this book can change your life.

At the Wellspring of Childhood by Joshua Elzner Pdf

The mercy of God is like water, which always descends to the lowest place, to the places of our greatest dependency and need. The meditations contained within this book, flowing from an encounter with this wonderful mercy, are a kind of personal testament to the Heart of God who is filled to overflowing with infinite tenderness. The author, progressively living a deeper life of solitude and prayer over a number of years, has here opened up the fruits of this prayer to be shared. Though he speaks from his own experience, from the mystery of his own solitude before God, his words nonetheless seek to express a truth that all of us bear deep within ourselves: the mystery of thirst. This book is a snapshot of the journey of someone touched by the love of God and longing for union with him, yet trudging haltingly along the dusty paths of this world. It also expresses the longing, not only for God and for his eternal gladness, but also to draw near in compassion to the pain and suffering of the world. But above all it a joyous witness to the drink which God has given, and which he yearns to give ever more deeply, to each of us. This is the most beautiful truth: not only do we thirst for God, but he thirsts infinitely more for us, ardently desiring to satisfy our thirsty hearts and to fill us with his infinite joy. These meditations are intended to speak more to the heart than to the mind, to engage the imagination and the emotions, to awaken the secret desires hidden in the soul. What you will find here is more a book of prayers than a treatise of any kind--a book intended to allow God to reach out more deeply to touch the heart with the love and intimacy that alone can fully satisfy it.

Journey for Justice by Nandini Gunewardena Pdf

This biography of the late Rev. Fr. Michael Rodrigo, OMI (1930-1987) of Sri Lanka, chronicles a life fearlessly devoted to the service of the poor, efforts to witness Christ to the poor through an innovative interfaith dialogue, and a collaboration for their social and economic empowerment. As a Catholic priest whose life parallels that of the recently martyred Oscar Romero of El Salvador, also assassinated for exposing the exploitation and marginalization of the poor, Fr. Michael was engaged in a selfless journey for justice. The volume analyzes the driving force of his quest to forge a healing bridge between the Christian and Buddhist populations of Sri Lanka through his spiritual grounding in Catholic social teaching and his unique formulation of an interreligious dialogue. It documents the indelible imprint of interfaith understanding he forged up to his untimely death. Interwoven with ethnographic methodology, the book offers a window for understanding the class and religious ruptures stemming from Sri Lanka's colonial history, contextualized in the social realities of poverty in rural Sri Lanka, the political and economic forces implicated in deepening poverty, the resistance struggle by oppressed youth, and Fr. Mike's legacy of justice through peace.

The Promises of God by Gary Gallant Pdf

This is a daily devotional from the Promises of God. Zep 3:17 He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing. Here is a verse filled with the tender and loving nature of God, offering us a beautiful glimpse into His heart. "He will take great delight in you." These words convey a profound truth about God's attitude toward His people. The Creator of the universe finds great joy and pleasure in His creation, particularly in His beloved children. It's a reminder that we are not just a part of God's plan; we are recipients of His deep affection. "He will quiet you with His love." This phrase paints a picture of God's love as a soothing and calming presence. In moments of turmoil, uncertainty, or distress, God's love can provide a sense of peace and security that quiets our anxieties. It's a reminder that His love is a source of comfort and refuge. "He will rejoice over you with singing." This is an incredibly intimate image. God not only loves us, but He also rejoices over us with singing. It's as if He takes delight in expressing His joy through a beautiful melody. This verse highlights the joy and celebration in heaven when even one soul is saved and reconciled to God. Zep 3:17 is a powerful reminder of God's deep love and affection for His children. It speaks to His desire to bring peace into our lives and to celebrate our presence in His divine plan. As you meditate on this verse, let it fill you with a profound sense of God's love and His delight in you. Embrace His love, find solace in His presence, and join in the heavenly chorus of rejoicing over the wonderful relationship you have with your Heavenly Father. The profound truths of Scripture often require spiritual discernment to fully grasp and appreciate. They may not resonate with those who have not yet come to faith or experienced a personal relationship with God. 1Co 2:14 acknowledges this concept: "The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit." This verse highlights that spiritual understanding is a gift of the Holy Spirit, and without that spiritual discernment, the truths of God may seem incomprehensible or even foolish to those who are not yet believers. Recognizing and acknowledging our sinful condition is a crucial step in becoming a child of God. This acknowledgment is foundational to the process of salvation and reconciliation with God. Here are some key elements of this process: Recognizing Sin: The first step is to acknowledge that we have all fallen short of God's perfect standard (Ro 3:23). We must come to terms with our sinfulness and realize that it separates us from a holy and righteous God. Repentance: Once we recognize our sinful condition, we should be moved to repentance. Repentance involves a genuine sorrow for our sins and a turning away from them. It's a change of heart and mind that leads us to seek forgiveness and a new way of living. Faith in Jesus Christ: Accepting our sinful condition is only part of the equation. We also need to place our faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord. It is through faith in Jesus that we receive forgiveness of sins and become children of God (Joh 1:12). Confession: Confessing our sins to God is an important aspect of the process. When we confess our sins, we are agreeing with God about our need for forgiveness and cleansing. God is faithful and just to forgive us when we confess our sins (1Jo 1:9). Receiving God's Grace: Salvation is a gift of God's grace. We cannot earn it through our efforts or good works. It is by God's grace that we are saved through faith (Eph 2:8-9). New Life in Christ: Once we accept our sinful condition, repent, place our faith in Christ, and receive God's forgiveness, we are born again as children of God. This new birth transforms us, and the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within us, empowering us to live a life that is pleasing to God. Accepting our sinful condition is the starting point of a journey toward becoming a child of God. It's an acknowledgment of our need for a Savior and a recognition of God's abundant love and grace that provides the way for us to be reconciled to Him.

A Pedagogy of Kindness by Catherine J. Denial Pdf

Academia is not, by and large, a kind place. Individualism and competition are what count. But without kindness at its core, Catherine Denial suggests, higher education fails students and instructors—and its mission—in critical ways. Part manifesto, part teaching memoir, part how-to guide, A Pedagogy of Kindness urges higher education to get aggressive about instituting kindness, which Denial distinguishes from niceness. Having suffered beneath the weight of just “getting along,” instructors need to shift every part of what they do to prioritizing care and compassion—for students as well as for themselves. A Pedagogy of Kindness articulates a fresh vision for teaching, one that focuses on ensuring justice, believing people, and believing in people. Offering evidence-based insights and drawing from her own rich experiences as a professor, Denial offers practical tips for reshaping syllabi, assessing student performance, and creating trust and belonging in the classroom. Her suggestions for concrete, scalable actions outline nothing less than a transformational discipline—one in which, together, we create bright new spaces, rooted in compassion, in which all engaged in teaching and learning might thrive.
