Wenda Gu at Dartmouth by Wenda Gu,Hood Museum of Art Pdf

This fully illustrated catalogue chronicles avant-garde artist Wenda Gu’s creation of two installations, united nations: the green house and united nations: united colors, commissioned by the Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College, in partnership with the Dartmouth College Library. Part of the artist’s fourteen-year global conceptual human hair sculpture series, the green house and united colors were made from hair collected from the Dartmouth community, combined with colored hair from other parts of the world. The essays and photographs in the catalogue celebrate the profound scope of the ongoing united nations series as well as the creation and production of these two new works, from community hair collection to the works’ installation and the subsequent local, national, and critical response. Along with Dartmouth’s united nations projects, the Hood Museum of Art premiered Wenda Gu’s forest of stone steles: retranslation and rewriting tang dynasty poetry, a series of large books of rubbings from the artist’s massive stone steles. An essay on this installation, followed by a consideration of Wenda Gu’s work within the global conceptual art movement, completes the volume. Catalogue contributors: Juliette Bianco, Assistant Director, Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College; David Cateforis, Associate Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art, University of Kansas; Eleanor Heartney, writer and Art in America critic; Allen Hockley, Associate Professor of Asian Art, Dartmouth College; Brian Kennedy, Director, Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College.

Reflecting Truth by Nicole Coolidge Rousmaniere,Mikiko Hirayama Pdf

This publication shows how scholarly investigation of Japanese photography in recent years has entered an important transitional stage -- moving beyond its focus on new discoveries and descriptions of collections, to a more sophisticated investigation of photography in its historical and cultural contexts. At one time marginalized as either a practical technique or amateur art form, Japanese photography has now earned full recognition as a legitimate subject of scholarly inquiry. It is now being examined in terms of its aesthetics, technological development, and its role in the development of a national identity in Japanese art during the country's transition to modernity as well as in contemporary society.Contributors include:Himeno Junichi (on the early development of photography in Japan),Sebastian Dobson (focussing on the colourful figure of Felice Beato),Luke Gartlan (on Baron Raimond von Stillfried-Ratenicz),Allen Hockley (on photographic albums produced by commercial studios in the 1880s and 1890s),Kinoshita Naoyuki (exploring the tradition of war portraiture in Japan)Mikiko Hirayama (describing the transition from the pioneering stages of photography in Japan to the modern era).

This book is an unparalleled source of cutting-edge information on every aspect of rescue, trauma management, and fracture care in the polytrauma/multiple injured patient. Damage control surgery is approached logically and systematically by dividing treatment into phases. The common goal of treating life-threatening conditions first, then treating major pelvic and extremity fractures, requires cooperation among all major disciplines and subspecialties involved in the care of polytrauma patients, and the book is accordingly multidisciplinary in nature. It is edited by pioneers in the field and the authors are all acclaimed experts. This second, revised and updated edition of Damage Control Management in the Polytrauma Patient will be invaluable for all clinicians who must weigh life-saving operations against limb-threatening conditions, including emergency personnel, trauma surgeons, orthopaedic traumatologists, and anesthesiologists.

Art to Come by Terry Smith Pdf

In Art to Come Terry Smith—who is widely recognized as one of the world's leading historians and theorists of contemporary art—traces the emergence of contemporary art and further develops his concept of contemporaneity. Smith shows that embracing contemporaneity as both a historical concept and a condition of the globalized world allows us to grasp how contemporary art exists in a fluid space of increasing interdependencies, multiple contemporaneous modernities, and persistent inequalities. Throughout these essays, Smith offers systematic proposals for writing contemporary art's histories while assessing how curators, critics, philosophers, artists, and art historians are currently doing so. Among other topics, Smith examines the intersection of architecture with other visual arts, Chinese art since the Cultural Revolution, how philosophers are theorizing concepts associated with the contemporary, Australian Indigenous art, and the current state of art history. Art to Come will be essential reading for artists, art students, curators, gallery workers, historians, critics, and theorists.

Women Framing Hair by Heather Hanna Pdf

This book explores the complex and enigmatic motif of hair in the work of five contemporary women artists, Chrystl Rijkeboer, Alice Maher, Annegret Soltau, Kathy Prendergast and Ellen Gallagher, from the late 1970s to the present. It investigates why hair is such a productive and resonant site of meaning, how it is suggestive of, and responds to, serial strategies, and why it appears to be of particular significance to women who are artists. It explores the implications of hair as an embodied material, its role as a haptic metaphor of the life cycle, and what might be seen as a darker, more liminal side of hair as a site of excess and body waste, and its ability to represent trauma and ‘wounding’. It also discusses some of the divergent histories of hair as a rich marker of identity in cultural discourses of beauty, myth and femininity, and as a symbol of status and power. Informed by a range of theoretical approaches, this book draws on Julia Kristeva’s theorizations of the abject, Hélène Cixous’s notion of écriture feminine, and a Deleuzian consideration of difference.
