The Island by Patricia Mahon Pdf

Stories from The Age of Distraction Series: Contemporary Novellas "We're so connected, we're disconnected.” The art of storytelling--and its survival--is a fundamental theme in Patricia Mahon’s new series of edgy novellas, cleverly weaving excerpts from timeless masters of fiction and thought within each volume. The juxtaposition of classic authors against contemporary muses cements the concept that storytelling is an art crucial to the preservation of the human epic: it is our narrative. In Volume One, The Island, a speech writer (Morgan) and a school teacher (Percy) lament the loss of human engagement and creativity due to the disconnect of the digital age. Joined by a Silicon Valley turncoat and techno-savant, the trio set out to create a global writing platform, an app that allows worldwide, real-time participation in a collective story. The concept goes viral but the irony lies in a virtual reality so strong, it takes the three on a journey of discovery, pitting fantasy against reality—this volume’s destination is the first of many more to come. Coming Oct 2016: Volume Two, The Vineyard, lands Morgan and Percy in a remote tasting room in California wine country, in search of Bartholomew, a legendary, illusive “grape whisperer” known for coaxing perfect ripeness and imparting the “whispered vintage” of the vineyard. After a rainstorm wreaks havoc, our protagonists are stranded without electricity among strangers forced to pass the time drinking wine and recounting tales, hoping their clues will uncover the myth or the man. Coming Spring 2017: Volume Three, The Abbey, takes flight to a small Irish town, nicknamed The Village of the Monks, where Morgan’s family lineage is rooted. Following the clues of her late grandmother, an iconic storyteller, the pair head to a haunted old church and meet vibrant Irish characters along the way. It isn’t long before spirits of the past begin to reveal the Abbey’s tumultuous history of tragedy and suppression, rewarding Morgan and Percy with much more than a family ghost story.

Highly Irregular by Arika Okrent Pdf

"Perhaps you're reading a book and stop to puzzle over absurd spelling rules, or you hear someone talking and get stuck on an expression, or your kid quizzes you on homework. Suddenly you ask yourself, "Wait, why do we do it this way?" You think about it, try to explain it, and keep running into walls. It doesn't conform to logic. It doesn't work the way you'd expect it to. There doesn't seem to be any rule at all. In Highly Irregular, Arika Okrent answers these questions and many more. Along the way she tells the story of the many influences--from invading French armies to stubborn Flemish printers--that made our language the way it is today"--

Arse Over Teakettle by Doug Taylor Pdf

Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn found adventure on the banks of the mighty Mississippi. Tom Hudson and his friend "Shorty" discovered it in the secluded laneways and avenues of a deceptively quiet Toronto neighbourhood. Arse Over Teakettle is an intriguing tale of Tom Hudson's boyhood escapades in Toronto during the 1940s. He and his mischievous friend, Shorty, encounter eccentric characters such as Grumpy, an unconventional older man in the neighbourhood, and their fierce neighbour-Mrs. Leyer. Their confrontations with the Kramer Gang are sometimes painful and at other times hilarious. As Tom and his friends become sexually aware, amusing situations develop. Shorty constantly pushes Tom to explore beyond the secure boundaries of childhood, into the world of the "big boys." An intimate and heartfelt tale of family life in Toronto, Arse Over Teakettle is set during the decade when the city is transforming from a parochial city into a cosmopolitan urban centre. In Tom's neighbourhood, difficulties arise as he confronts ethnic and religious prejudice, which wounds his boyhood friends.

Jokes and the Linguistic Mind by Debra Aarons Pdf

Through the lens of cognitive science, Jokes and the Linguistic Mind investigates jokes that play on some aspect of the structure and function of language. In so doing, Debra Aarons shows that these 'linguistic jokes' can evoke our tacit knowledge of the language we use. Analyzing hilarious examples from movies, plays and books, Jokes and the Linguistic Mind demonstrates that tacit linguistic knowledge must become conscious for linguistic jokes to be understood. The book examines jokes that exploit pragmatic, semantic, morphological, phonological and semantic features of language, as well as jokes that use more than one language and jokes that are about language itself. Additionally, the text explores the relationship between cryptic crossword clues and linguistic jokes in order to demonstrate the difference between tacit knowledge of language and rules of language use that are articulated for a particular purpose. With its use of jokes as data and its highly accessible explanations of complex linguistic concepts, this book is an engaging supplementary text for introductory courses in linguistics, psycholinguistics and cognitive science. It will also be of interest to scholars in translation studies, applied linguistics and philosophy of language.

Speaking of Animals by Robert Palmatier Pdf

No other nonhuman source has served as the basis for more metaphors than animals. Speaking of Animals is a dictionary of animal metaphors that are current in American English. It is comprehensive, historical, and metaphor-based. Each entry refers to the other dictionaries that catalog that same metaphor, and the dates of first appearance in writing are supplied, where possible, for both the metaphor and the name of the source. The main text is organized alphabetically by metaphor rather than by animal or animal behavior; all the metaphors are classified according to their animal source in a list at the end of the book. An animal metaphor is a word, phrase, or sentence that expresses a resemblance or similarity between someone or something and a particular animal or animal class. True metaphors are single words, such as the noun tiger, the verb hog, and the adjective chicken. Phrasal metaphors combine true metaphors with other words, such as blind tiger, hog the road, and chicken colonel. Other animal metaphors take the form of similes, such as like rats leaving a sinking ship and prickly as a hedgehog. Still others take the form of proverbs, such as Don't count your chickens before they hatch and Let sleeping dogs lie. The horse is the animal most frequently referred to in metaphors, followed closely by the dog. The Bible is the most prolific literary source of animal metaphors, followed closely by Shakespeare.
