What Did Jesus Look Like? by Joan E. Taylor Pdf

Jesus Christ is arguably the most famous man who ever lived. His image adorns countless churches, icons, and paintings. He is the subject of millions of statues, sculptures, devotional objects and works of art. Everyone can conjure an image of Jesus: usually as a handsome, white man with flowing locks and pristine linen robes. But what did Jesus really look like? Is our popular image of Jesus overly westernized and untrue to historical reality? This question continues to fascinate. Leading Christian Origins scholar Joan E. Taylor surveys the historical evidence, and the prevalent image of Jesus in art and culture, to suggest an entirely different vision of this most famous of men. He may even have had short hair.

The Glory of God in the Face of Jesus Christ by David K. Bernard Pdf

There is now a substantial scholarly consensus for the emergence of a high or divine Christology very early and from a Jewish context, but the questions of "how" and "why" need further study. Within the framework of traditional Jewish monotheism, Paul and other early Christians used the language of deity to describe Jesus. To investigate their view of Jesus, the author examines Paul's discourse in 2 Cor 3:16–4:6, employing insights from rhetorical criticism and Oneness Pentecostal Christology. He explains how early Christians proclaimed the deity of Jesus within their monotheistic Jewish context. He then identifies socio-rhetorical reasons for and practical consequences of the monotheistic deification of Jesus.

Lord Jesus Christ by Larry W. Hurtado Pdf

This outstanding book provides an in-depth historical study of the place of Jesus in the religious life, beliefs, and worship of Christians from the beginnings of the Christian movement down to the late second century. Lord Jesus Christ is a monumental work on earliest Christian devotion to Jesus, sure to replace Wilhelm Bousset s Kyrios Christos (1913) as the standard work on the subject. Larry Hurtado, widely respected for his previous contributions to the study of the New Testament and Christian origins, offers the best view to date of how the first Christians saw and reverenced Jesus as divine. In assembling this compelling picture, Hurtado draws on a wide body of ancient sources, from Scripture and the writings of such figures as Ignatius of Antioch and Justin to apocryphal texts such as the Gospel of Thomas and the Gospel of Truth. Hurtado considers such themes as early beliefs about Jesus divine status and significance, but he also explores telling devotional practices of the time, including prayer and worship, the use of Jesus name in exorcism, baptism and healing, ritual invocation of Jesus as Lord, martyrdom, and lesser-known phenomena such as prayer postures and the curious scribal practice known today as the nomina sacra. The revealing portrait that emerges from Hurtado s comprehensive study yields definitive answers to questions like these: How important was this formative period to later Christian tradition? When did the divinization of Jesus first occur? Was early Christianity influenced by neighboring religions? How did the idea of Jesus divinity change old views of God? And why did the powerful dynamics of early beliefs and practices encourage people to make the costly move of becoming a Christian? Boasting an unprecedented breadth and depth of coverage — the book speaks authoritatively on everything from early Christian history to themes in biblical studies to New Testament Christology — Hurtado s Lord Jesus Christ is at once significant enough that a wide range of scholars will want to read it and accessible enough that general readers interested at all in Christian origins will also profit greatly from it.

The Lost Gospel by Simcha Jacobovici Pdf

Waiting to be rediscovered in the British Library is an ancient manuscript of the early Church, copied by an anonymous monk. The manuscript is at least 1,450 years old, possibly dating to the first century. And now, The Lost Gospel provides the first ever translation from Syriac into English of this unique document that tells the inside story of Jesus’ social, family, and political life. The Lost Gospel takes the reader on an unparalleled historical adventure through a paradigm shifting manuscript. What the authors eventually discover is as astounding as it is surprising: the confirmation of Jesus’ marriage to Mary Magdalene; the names of their two children; the towering presence of Mary Magdalene; a previously unknown plot on Jesus’ life (thirteen years prior to the crucifixion); an assassination attempt against Mary Magdalene and their children; Jesus’ connection to political figures at the highest level of the Roman Empire; and a religious movement that antedates that of Paul—the Church of Mary Magdalene.Part historical detective story, part modern adventure, The Lost Gospel reveals secrets that have been hiding in plain sight for millennia.

Who Is Jesus Christ? Unlocking the Mystery in the Gospel of Matthew by Eric Sammons Pdf

"Who do you say that I am?" Christ's contemporaries ascribed many names and titles to Him, as we see recorded in the New Testament. Each one tells us something different about who Jesus is. In this book, Eric Sammons frames a series of thoughtful reflections on the names of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew with references from the Church Fathers, saints, and Doctors of the Church. He "translates" the depth of the mystery of the Faith so you can discover new dimensions of the person of Christ and new ways to recognize and welcome Him into your life. "This volume exemplifies what the world Synod of Bishops recently called for: sound biblical resources that help people encounter Christ, the Word made flesh, in the reading of Scripture." -- Mary Healy, Ph.D., General Editor, Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture "Eric Sammons knows how to cut to the chase with grace and aplomb. Who Is Jesus Christ? is the most important question that has ever been asked in the history of the human race and he ably helps us answer it -- and all the deepest longings of the human heart -- through the Christ he serves so well." -- Mark P. Shea, Author, Mary: Mother of the Son "Drawing on his own faith journey and his personal experience, Eric Sammons demonstrates how the lived Word of God -- reflected in the lives and writings of the saints and prayers of the Church -- can help us to better know Jesus and to strive to form our daily lives into his likeness. Who Is Jesus Christ? is a work of devotion and readers should find it both inspiring and encouraging." -- Most Reverend Donald W. Wuerl, S.T.D., Archbishop of Washington "Those who read this book will be richly rewarded as they seek to encounter the Lord in Matthew's Gospel." -- Father Giles R. Dimock, O.P., S.T.D., Prior, Dominican House of Studies

Jesus Is the Christ by Michael F. Bird Pdf

Entering the fray of a hotly debated issue, Michael Bird argues that the title and role of "Messiah" ascribed to Jesus is not a late addition to the four Gospels but their structural and semantic foundation. Stressing that Christianity is itself a messianic movement, Bird argues that the messianic testimony is the "mother of all Christology."

The Identity of Jesus Christ, Expanded and Updated Edition by Hans W. Frei Pdf

This is a book about Jesus of Nazareth. It is not a book about "story," nor about "narrative theology." Hans Frei was not a theologian of story or of narrative in any general way, and this book is neither about the narrative quality of our existence and the gospel's relation to that quality, nor about the narrative shape of the Scriptures as a whole and the call on us to place ourselves within that narrative.Rather, this is a book about the way in which Jesus of Nazareth's identity is rendered by the Gospels--largely the Synoptic Gospels, particularly the Gospel of Luke, and especially in the passion and resurrection sequences--by means of a certain kind of narrative.--from the Foreword by Mike Higton

Who is Jesus Christ by Charles Holmes Sr. Pdf

“There is only one body and one spirit even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God, and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in you all” (Ephesians 4:4–6). There is only one true, living God, the God that made heaven and earth. There is only one church, the body of Christ, which is a body of believers in Christ through the gospel. There is one faith, Christianity. “Jesus saith unto him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man cometh unto the Father but by me” (John 14:6). Jesus is not a way, but the way, he is the door to eternal life. “Neither is there salvation in any other for there is none name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Jesus Christ is the savior of the world, the redeemer, God in human flesh. “‘Ye are my witness,’ saith the Lord, ‘and my servant whom I have chosen that ye may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me, there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. I, even I, am the Lord, and beside me there is no savior. I have declared and have saved, and I have shown when there was no strange god among you. Therefore, ye are my witnesses,’ saith the Lord, ‘that I am God’” (Isaiah 43:10–12). “‘Thus,’ saith the Lord, the king of Israel, and his redeemer the Lord of hosts, ‘I am the first, and I am the last, and beside me there is no God’” (Isaiah 44:6). The true and living God must be able to redeem his follower from sin or he’s not God because there is nothing too hard for God. For God to forgive your sin, something or someone must die in your place and atone for your sin by his blood. “Because without the shedding of blood is no forgiveness of sin” (Hebrews 9:22). Once you believe the gospel of Jesus Christ, the blood of Jesus cleanses your sin, then God forgives your sin. God cannot forgive your sins until it is cleansed by the blood of Jesus. “‘I am alpha and omega, the beginning and the end,’ saith the Lord, ‘which is and which was and which is to come.’” The Almighty Jesus Christ is saying that he is Almighty God in the flesh, our redeemer. No one can forgive and redeem you from your sin but God Almighty. You cannot work off sin, it must be redeemed, and the redeemer must be sinless because a sinner cannot redeem another sinner.
