Wild Child to Couture Style by Shailah Edmonds Pdf

Wild Child to Couture Style is based on the true story of former International supermodel, Shailah Edmonds, who was one of the pioneers of African American models that conquered the Couture market, (which is the most rarefied realm of the modeling profession) in Paris, from the late 1970's to the early 1990's. This manuscript chronicles the authors' journey from growing up in Portland, Oregon, to becoming a high fashion model, who has walked the runways of Paris, London, Rome, Japan and other International locales, where she was in demand. Ms. Edmonds writes about a young love that led to her to becoming a teenage mother. Putting her dreams of being an actress on the back burner to mother her child, Shailah's life changed when she met Ruth Turner, while walking in Washington, D.C. Ruth introduced her to New York City. The book chronicles Shailah's experiences traveling around the world in a dream profession. Although Shailah feels as if she is a hidden figure in the mainstream names of fashion, she was among one of the most photographed runway models of that era, because of the energy, style and flair she brought to the runway. Pictorially, the story is told very well with photos of her ancestors who were born into slavery, her progress as she began to be groomed, as well as an abundance of strikingly beautiful couture color photographs. With the popularity of stories of historic black women, this book could easily be a best seller. with elements of courage, drama, comedy, romance and endurance by a single African American female. It is a true story of faith, love and persistence, which would serve as inspiration and example to all young women daring to reach out for a better life. This book would be of interest because not only is it beneficial as a guide to success, but also an inspiration to all, especially aspiring models who are hungry for guidance an from industry professional. This work will appeal to readers who enjoy inspirational memoirs.

Paris Fashion by Valerie Steele Pdf

Paris has been the international capital of fashion for more than 300 years. Even before the rise of the haute couture, Parisians were notorious for their obsession with fashion, and foreigners eagerly followed their lead. From Charles Frederick Worth to Gabrielle "Coco†? Chanel, Christian Dior, and Yves Saint Laurent, fashion history is dominated by the names of Parisian couturiers. But Valerie Steele's Paris Fashion is much more than just a history of great designers. This fascinating book demonstrates that the success of Paris ultimately rests on the strength of its fashion culture – created by a host of fashion performers and spectators, including actresses, dandies, milliners, artists, and writers. First published in 1988 to great international acclaim, this pioneering book has now been completely revised and brought up to date, encompassing the rise of fashion's multiple world cities in the 21st century. Lavishly illustrated, deeply learned, and elegantly written, Valerie Steele's masterwork explores with brilliance and flair why Paris remains the capital of fashion.

Large Animals by Jess Arndt Pdf

A Buzzfeed Best Fiction Book of 2017 • An Entropy magazine Best Book of 2017 “Jess Arndt’s Large Animals is wildly original, even as it joins in with the classics of loaded, outlaw literature. Acerbic, ecstatic, hilarious, psychedelic, and affecting in turn, this is an electric debut.” —Maggie Nelson, National Book Critics Circle Award–winning author of The Argonauts Jess Arndt's striking debut collection confronts what it means to have a body. Boldly straddling the line between the imagined and the real, the masculine and the feminine, the knowable and the impossible, these twelve stories are an exhilarating and profoundly original expression of voice. In “Jeff,” Lily Tomlin confuses Jess for Jeff, instigating a dark and hilarious identity crisis. In “Together,” a couple battles a mysterious STD that slowly undoes their relationship, while outside a ferocious weed colonizes their urban garden. And in “Contrails,” a character on the precipice of a seismic change goes on a tour of past lovers, confronting their own reluctance to move on. Arndt’s subjects are canny observers even while they remain dangerously blind to their own truest impulses. Often unnamed, these narrators challenge the limits of language—collectively, their voices create a transgressive new formal space that makes room for the queer, the nonconforming, the undefined. And yet, while they crave connection, love, and understanding, they are constantly at risk of destroying themselves. Large Animals pitches toward the heart, pushing at all our most tender parts—our sex organs, our geography, our words, and the tendons and nerves of our culture.

The Chiffon Trenches by André Leon Talley Pdf

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the pages of Vogue to the runways of Paris, this “captivating” (Time) memoir by a legendary style icon captures the fashion world from the inside out, in its most glamorous and most cutthroat moments. “The Chiffon Trenches honestly and candidly captures fifty sublime years of fashion.”—Manolo Blahnik NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR • Fortune • Garden & Gun • New York Post During André Leon Talley’s first magazine job, alongside Andy Warhol at Interview, a fateful meeting with Karl Lagerfeld began a decades-long friendship with the enigmatic, often caustic designer. Propelled into the upper echelons by his knowledge and adoration of fashion, André moved to Paris as bureau chief of John Fairchild’s Women’s Wear Daily, befriending fashion's most important designers (Halston, Yves Saint Laurent, Oscar de la Renta). But as André made friends, he also made enemies. A racially tinged encounter with a member of the house of Yves Saint Laurent sent him back to New York and into the offices of Vogue under Grace Mirabella. There, he eventually became creative director, developing an unlikely but intimate friendship with Anna Wintour. As she rose to the top of Vogue’s masthead, André also ascended, and soon became the most influential man in fashion. The Chiffon Trenches offers a candid look at the who’s who of the last fifty years of fashion. At once ruthless and empathetic, this engaging memoir tells with raw honesty the story of how André not only survived the brutal style landscape but thrived—despite racism, illicit rumors, and all the other challenges of this notoriously cutthroat industry—to become one of the most renowned voices and faces in fashion. Woven throughout the book are also André’s own personal struggles that impacted him over the decades, along with intimate stories of those he turned to for inspiration (Diana Vreeland, Diane von Fürstenberg, Lee Radziwill, to name a few), and of course his Southern roots and faith, which guided him since childhood. The result is a highly compelling read that captures the essence of a world few of us will ever have real access to, but one that we all want to know oh so much more about.

I Am Both Woman and Child, Both Tame and Wild by Maggie Maze Pdf

This book collectively presents an array of topics from my life experiences as a girl growing up in the Midwest to becoming a mature older woman in the age of social media. As both illustrator and writer I enjoy presenting an image with a brief story or verse. Many years ago my parents asked me to design a Christmas card. This is where it all started. Hand-made Christmas cards expanded into other modern American holidays, such as Halloween. Halloween is a favorite of mine as it offers up so much eerily fun for the old and young alike. This is why this collection consists of youthful poems reminiscing of childhood experiences in family and holiday themes as well as poems catering to adults about desire, love, loss and other mature themes. Some poems were written prior to an illustration accompanying them while other illustrations were drawn first with a poem following. Some poems have no illustration at all for example, the poem, “The Hot Bartender” was inspired by viewing an iconic tv show and begs you to imagine what he looks like as I purposely did not include an illustration. This collection includes a passion that embodies a sense of style and fashion in the clothes design some characters wear. “Dressed in the finest silk, velvet and plaid, she’s a sight of breathtaking beauty and style”, is described in the poem, “Celtic Lass in Irish Couture”. Each one of us embodies our own sense of style. Reflections of style, life experiences and how I perceive the world around me can be found in this book. May this collection find you reminiscing about delightful memories and take you to a place of calm reflection.
