Wild Life in Southern Seas by Louis Becke Pdf
Wild Life in Southern Seas by Louis Becke is about the various sea life and whale fights seen by the narrator in the company of a young girl. Excerpt: "We—a little girl of six, and myself—were seated upon a high, flat-topped, grassy headland of a lonely part of the northern coast of New South Wales, five miles from the old penal settlement of Port Macquarie. Three hundred feet below, the long Pacific rollers, unruffled by the faintest breath of air, swept in endless but surf less succession around a chain of black, isolated, and kelp-covered rocks..."

South Sea Maidens by Michael Sturma Pdf
From the first European contact with Tahiti in 1767, the myth of the South Sea maiden has endured through many incarnations. Although the maiden frequently provided an idealized antidote to Western women's self-assertion, the South Pacific also afforded a space where boundaries between the sexes could be relaxed and transgressed. From James Cook and Captain Bligh to James Michener and Margaret Mead, the Island girl has occupied a special place in the erotic imagination of the West. In a sweeping study that embraces history, literature, visual arts, anthropology and film, this study gives fresh insight into the myths and reality of a Western icon. While women from far off lands have always been presented as exotic and alluring, the South Sea maiden has come to symbolize feminine sexuality, as an integral part of the adventure, sensuality, and romance of the South Pacific. Everyone from early explorers to 19th century writers and artists to latter day anthropologists, film makers, and tourism promoters have extolled their virtues and their bodies. Sturma looks behind the popular clich^D'es to reveal how the myth-making process reflected not only Western desires, but the cut and thrust of changing sexual politics. The result is an intriguing look at both South Sea image-makers and the women whom they found so seductive.

Wild Justice: Stories of the South Seas by Lloyd Osbourne Pdf
A classic that describes how, deep down, there appears to be a craving for a more primitive existence; that, while this is sometimes a delusion, the South Seas are more suitable to such aspirations than any other section of the globe. Few races are more appealing than Polynesians. Frank, the winner, is homosexual and extremely courteous; the taller type is frequently quite attractive and just slightly darker than Southern Europeans. Some of their experiences are genuinely lyrical. They have nearly limitless free time to share with the tourists in their midst, half nude, with flowers in their hair, and enough labor to maintain them in wonderful physical form. And soil, humanity's most formidable obstacle, does not exist. No one is cleaner, and no one has such high self-esteem. Sometimes one wonders whether it is not the white barbarian, who is the boss in certain aspects. Samuel Lloyd Osbourne, author, is an American writer and the stepson of Scottish novelist Robert Louis Stevenson, with whom he has co-written three works, including The Wrecker, and provided feedback and ideas on others. Osbourne also authored a few short tales and articles.

The Great South Sea by Glyndwr Williams Pdf
From the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries, English buccaneers, privateers, and naval expeditions sought fame and fortune in the distant reaches of the South Sea. Beginning with the voyage of Francis Drake in the 1570s and continuing through that of George Anson in the 1740s, a series of predatory English adventurers pursued Spanish treasure, and for a few the dream of riches came true. For most, the voyages ended in disappointment, and sometimes death. This engrossing book investigates these maritime adventures and how they were described in popular accounts of the time--accounts that affected English consciousness and perceptions of the wider world and that influenced the planning and nature of the later great voyages of James Cook and others. Glyndwr Williams, a leading expert on the exploration of the Pacific Ocean, draws on printed accounts of South Sea voyages as well as unpublished records--buccaneer journals, expedition papers, and government documents from public and private archives. For English seamen preying on Spanish trade and treasure, the South Sea was limited to the waters lapping the shores of Chile, Peru, and Mexico. But the vision was wider for others, Williams reveals. Cartographers at home in England, untrammeled by the constraints and dangers of actual voyaging, produced speculative maps with a vast Terra Australis Incognita, with fabulous Islands of Solomon, and with a promised short passage from Atlantic to Pacific. Satirical and utopian writers from Joseph Hall to Jonathan Swift found ample space in the wide ocean for their fictional travelers. And contemporary published voyage accounts--marvelous, though not necessarily reliable--further blurred the line between real and imaginary, contributing to the alluring, exotic image of the South Sea that took root in English folk memory and long outlasted the age of the buccaneers.
