Wild Life on the Rockies (Classic Reprint) by Enos Abijah Mills Pdf

Excerpt from Wild Life on the Rockies @1115 book contains the record of a few of the many happy days and novel experiences which I have had in the wilds. For more than twenty years it has been my good fortune to live most of the time with nature, on the mountains of the West. I have made scores of long exploring rambles over the mountains in every season of the year, a nature-lover charmed with the birds and the trees. On my later excursions I have gone alone and without firearms. During three succeeding winters, in which I was a Government Experiment Officer and called the State Snow Observer, I scaled many of the higher peaks of the Rockies and made many studies on the upper slopes of these mountains. The Rocky Mountain Goat (Classic Reprint) by Madison Grant Pdf

Excerpt from The Rocky Mountain Goat In western Europe we find first the chamois (Rupicapra), known in the Spanish Sierras and Pyrenees as the izard, and extending eastward through the Alps and Carpathians as far as the Caucasus. Throughout all this range only one species is recognized. The next genus of this group is the goral (Cemas), with four species ranging throughout the Himalayas and parts of China, into Amurland. In Tibet we have the third and decidedly most aberrant member of the Rupicaprina:, the takin (Budorcas), the horns of which suggest those of the gnu. Only one species of this genus is known. The fourth, and to Americans perhaps the most interesting Old World member of this Subfamily, is the serow (Namorhedus), locally known as the forest goat. This genus is perhaps, more closely allied to Oreamnos than any of the preceding genera, and its horns resemble those of the mountain goat, but are shorter and thicker. The genus Namorhedus inhabits the Himalayas, Tibet and China with outlying representatives in Burma, Sumatra, Formosa and Japan and it is divided into numerous species. The fifth genus is Oreamnos, the subject of this article. All the members of these genera resemble the goat in tooth structure, but differ widely from them in the position and shape of the horns, face glands and other important details. The whole group is to be regarded as an early off-shoot of the Bovida, to some extent intermediate between the goats and the true bovine antelopes. The Rupicaprina must have pushed north, with their not distant ally the musk-ox, at a very early time and become adjusted to alpine and boreal conditions. At the close of the glacial period many of its members deserted the low country and retired to high altitudes so that in some instances, notably that of the chamois, we have an example of discontinuous distribution. Its sole American representative probably reached this continent by way of the Bering Sea land connection, during the middle Pleistocene, together with the other American genera of the Boznda. Generic Characters. Oreamnos as remarked above, while more closely related to Namorhedus than to the other members of the group, has departed widely in structure from all of its relatives. With Kit Carson, in the Rockies by Everett McNeil Pdf

Excerpt from With Kit Carson, in the Rockies: A Tale of the Beaver Country The United States owes much to the trappers, to the men who shouldered their long-barreled rifles, mounted their tough little horses, slung traps and packs on the backs of horses and mules, and went forth fearlessly into the wilds of the then unexplored wildernesses of the Great West, lured thither by the gold on the backs of the beavers and the other fur-bearing animals and by the call of the wild to their own adventurous spirits. They were not only the real finders of the way to the West, but, also, of the ways through the West to the Pacific Ocean. Long before the days of the explorers, like Pike and Long and Fremont, even before that adventurous wilderness journey of Lewis and Clark, the trails of the trappers had crossed and recrossed the Rocky Mountains and the cracks of their rifles had been heard in their most hidden fastnesses. The scientifically educated and literary explorers came and saw and recorded; and then they told the wonderful story of what they had seen of the West to the world, and the world has given to them all the honors. The trappers could not do this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Saddle and Camp, in the Rockies, an Expert's Picture of Game Conditions in the Heart of Our Hunting Country (Classic Reprint) by Dillon Wallace Pdf

Excerpt from Saddle and Camp, in the Rockies, an Expert's Picture of Game Conditions in the Heart of Our Hunting Country It was a long and tedious undertaking to educate our lawmakers to appreciate the fact that deer, elk, mountain sheep, and other game animals really are of intrinsic value and might prove of decided profit to the State. Hardly yet have the legislators of many of our States come to a full realization of the fact that wild tracts of country not capable of agricultural development, or not at present so utilized, may support game animals that will be of the same relative value to the State as cattle are to the individual ranchman.
