"Women and Indian Society: Options and Constraints is all about the women of India: the way they were perceived during the ancient times, the perceptions of their role in a matriarchal society, and the changes that cropped up in their lives during the freedom struggle. However, not much ground appears to have been covered in analysing the causes for the subordinate status of the Indian women. The author has explained the core causes for their cloistered roles, and their marginalisation, and has put forth some key factors that could empower them with an identity of their own and supply them with a viable escape route out of a state of entrapment. The basic reasons for subjugation of women in India are lack of education, denial of exposure to activities outside the homes, and an unreasonable rationalisation that such education or exposure will not improve their lot anyway. This has led to a self-fulfilling prophesy type of consequence, and left the women unchanged. As a woman in India, I find that the society is changing a lot in terms of acceptance of the many roles of women as professionals, as bread-earners in families and as independent thinking individuals. The traditional Indian woman has evolved to prove herself equal in many professions as well as proved better suited than men in others. The situation for the changing role of women is improving fast. On the other hand, female foeticide, dowry deaths, and domestic abuse provide a macabre background of primitive barbarism. In the typical Indian Society, you find that there are still expectations and assumptions about women that are not so much relevant to their current status, but a clear hangover from our suppressive past. This may be more obvious with traditional women or women in rural societies, but it is extremely prevalent in urban ones as well. This book contains the articles related to women issues. It addresses critical aspects of life of women in India like violence, female foeticide, challenges against working women, psychological barriers in empowerment of women, live-in-relationship, health issues etc. Articles related to the status of Tribal and Muslim women, Role of judiciary and role of women in independence movement are one of important matters which we should discuss. Indian society has undergone many rapid changes in the relatively short time that has elapsed since the country gained independence. These changes have created their own pulls and pressures and the one segment of Indian society that has, perhaps, been most affected is women. While the rest of the world is changing, they are nearly always required to conform to age-old and traditional images and stereotypes. This absorbing collection of twenty-one articles, some previously published and others especially commissioned, examines and challenges the various roles ascribed to women in the context of a rapidly changing society. There are two concerns that bind the essays together--first, that the reality of women's subordination can best be understood by traditional and mythical portrayals of women; and, second, that this understanding must be balanced by a sensitivity to the "immediate" context (for example, the present-day violence against a woman's person and personhood). The contributors to this volume belong to a wide variety of backgrounds ranging from activists to academics. Between them, they provide perspectives from the grassroots and also the disciplines of anthropology, psychology and sociology.
