Southern Strategies by Elna C. Green Pdf

The biographies of more than 800 women form the basis for Elna Green's study of the suffrage and the antisuffrage movements in the South. Green's comprehensive analysis highlights the effects that factors such as class background, marital status, educational level, and attitudes about race and gender roles had in inspiring the region's women to work in favor of, or in opposition to, their own enfranchisement. Green sketches the ranks of both movements--which included women and men, black and white--and identifies the ways in which issues of class, race, and gender determined the composition of each side. Coming from a wide array of beliefs and backgrounds, Green argues, southern women approached enfranchisement with an equally varied set of strategies and ideologies. Each camp defined and redefined itself in opposition to the other. But neither was entirely homogeneous: issues such as states' rights and the enfranchisement of black women were so divisive as to give rise to competing organizations within each group. By focusing on the grassroots constituency of each side, Green provides insight into the whole of the suffrage debate.

Making Women's Medicine Masculine by Monica H. Green Pdf

Making Women's Medicine Masculine challenges the common belief that prior to the eighteenth century men were never involved in any aspect of women's healthcare in Europe. Using sources ranging from the writings of the famous twelfth-century female practitioner, Trota of Salerno, all the way to the great tomes of Renaissance male physicians, and covering both medicine and surgery, this study demonstrates that men slowly established more and more authority in diagnosing and prescribing treatments for women's gynaecological conditions (especially infertility) and even certain obstetrical conditions. Even if their 'hands-on' knowledge of women's bodies was limited by contemporary mores, men were able to establish their increasing authority in this and all branches of medicine due to their greater access to literacy and the knowledge contained in books, whether in Latin or the vernacular. As Monica Green shows, while works written in French, Dutch, English, and Italian were sometimes addressed to women, nevertheless even these were often re-appropriated by men, both by practitioners who treated women and by laymen interested to learn about the 'secrets' of generation. While early in the period women were considered to have authoritative knowledge on women's conditions (hence the widespread influence of the alleged authoress 'Trotula'), by the end of the period to be a woman was no longer an automatic qualification for either understanding or treating the conditions that most commonly afflicted the female sex - with implications of women's exclusion from production of knowledge on their own bodies extending to the present day.

Red Green's Beginner's Guide to Women by Red Green Pdf

Red Green is celebrated as one of the handiest men in North America. But as well as being a purveyor of inventive practical advice on, for example, making a jetpack from two propane tanks, a hybrid car from recycled golf carts and satellite dishes, and a kiddie ride from a bar stool attached to the agitator of a washing machine, Red Green is also noted for his insights into that most difficult of assembly jobs, human relationships. His previous bestselling tome, How to Do Everything, showed Red dipping his toe into the self-help genre with such items as "How to make dinner more romantic" and "The easy way to raise children." Now Red Green -- a veteran husband (of Bernice), father, soul-searcher, philosopher and observer -- has devoted an entire book to sharing with other battle-weary and confused males all he has learned about the differences between the sexes. Set out in approximately chronological order, from teen dating to the last words of men ("You know, honey, in the last couple of years, you've really packed on the beef"), this is the testosterone owner's manual to every aspect of finding a mate and then learning to deal with her growing disappointment in you. The man who has already shared such morsels as "If you can't be handsome, be handy" and "Quando omni flunkus moritati" ("When all else fails, play dead") here presents a PhD in life-lessons about the most vexing problem facing mankind today, or any day: women.

Lighter Than My Shadow by Katie Green Pdf

A poignant, heart-lifting graphic memoir about anorexia, eating disorders and the journey to recovery Like most kids, Katie was a picky eater. She’d sit at the table in silent protest, hide uneaten toast in her bedroom, listen to parental threats that she’d have to eat it for breakfast. But in any life a set of circumstance can collide, and normal behaviour might soon shade into something sinister, something deadly. Lighter Than My Shadow is a hand-drawn story of struggle and recovery, a trip into the black heart of a taboo illness, an exposure of those who are so weak as to prey on the vulnerable, and an inspiration to anybody who believes in the human power to endure towards happiness. ‘Even at its most heartbreaking it never feels sombre ... Inspiring, plucky and, in the end, consoling, it’s hard to put down’ Observer

Women & Weed by Elana Frankel Pdf

It's easy to feel overwhelmed by the newfound power of buying and using pot. So, first things first - here's a basic look at the plant. What is it? Where has it been? And how do you use it? Even if you consider yourself a pro, a little refresher could not hurt. As cannabis moves towards legalization and declining social stigma, the green rush has ignited an entrepreneurial spark and that means blazing new trails, and inspiring others. Entrepreneurs are known for heading out into uncharted territory with superhuman dedication. Add to that the grey area of working in the cannabis industry and you’ve got possibilities…challenging but feasible. One thing is for certain, women are flocking to the industry and don’t mind working in high-risk, unchartered territory. Women are starting businesses, growing and extracting, working in real estate and the medical community. Today, at least 25% of executive-level roles in the industry are held by women and that is a slight edge over U.S. businesses as a whole (23%). However, when it comes to cannabis, it’s rarely obvious what to do next in the ever-changing political, social and medical scene, and, traditionally a woman would have relied on herself when challenges arise. In this premium book, the power of personal narratives brings a better understanding to these complex issues. When asked to share their own stories within the context of the industry, the women on these pages made connections between their own biographies and the industry, and happily pass on that knowledge. Maybe the reader will see herself in these pages or perhaps she is still learning and unlearning. (Don’t worry, we’ve got a primer for you!) Either way, readers will soon realize that they are not alone and there are resources to get more involved.

Women's Leisure, what Leisure? by Eileen Green,Sandra Hebron,Diana Woodward Pdf

Until recently the Sociology of Leisure was dominated by theoretical approaches which made women's experiences invisible. Drawing upon feminist perspectives this book re-conceptualises leisure in order to provide a more informed understanding of women's leisure. The authors argue that such an examination necessarily involves a study of women's daily lives which views leisure in relation to the structure of their lives as a whole. Drawing upon a major study of Sheffield women's leisure and other sources, the processes of negotiation and social control are cited as crucial in determing women's access to free time and the resources required to enjoy leisure.

The Women of Rothschild by Natalie Livingstone Pdf

In The Women of Rothschild, Natalie Livingstone reveals the role of women in shaping the legacy of the famous Rothschild dynasty, synonymous with wealth and power. From the East End of London to the Eastern seaboard of the United States, from Spitalfields to Scottish castles, from Bletchley Park to Buchenwald, and from the Vatican to Palestine, Natalie Livingstone follows the extraordinary lives of the Rothschild women from the dawn of the nineteenth century to the early years of the twenty-first. As Jews in a Christian society and women in a deeply patriarchal family, they were outsiders. Excluded from the family bank, they forged their own distinct dynasty of daughters and nieces, mothers and aunts. They became influential hostesses and talented diplomats, choreographing electoral campaigns, advising prime ministers, advocating for social reform, and trading on the stock exchange. Misfits and conformists, conservatives and idealists, performers and introverts, they mixed with everyone from Queen Victoria to Chaim Weizmann, Rossini to Isaiah Berlin, and the Duke of Wellington to Alec Guinness, as well as with amphetamine-dealers, suffragists and avant-garde artists. Rothschild women helped bring down ghetto walls in early nineteenth-century Frankfurt, inspired some of the most remarkable cultural movements of the Victorian period, and in the mid-twentieth century burst into America, where they patronized Thelonious Monk and drag-raced through Manhattan with Miles Davis. Absorbing and compulsive, The Women of Rothschild gives voice to the complicated, privileged, and gifted women whose vision and tenacity shaped history.
