Handbook of Research on New Dimensions of Gender Mainstreaming and Women Empowerment by Kuruvilla, Moly,George, Irene Pdf

Globally, women are facing social, economic, and cultural barriers impeding their autonomy and agency. Accelerated women empowerment programs often fail to attain their targets as envisaged by the policymakers due to a variety of reasons, with the most prominent being the deep-rooted cultural norms ingrained within society. In the era of globalization, empowerment of women demands new approaches and strategies that encourage the mainstreaming of gender equality as a societal norm. The Handbook of Research on New Dimensions of Gender Mainstreaming and Women Empowerment is a critical scholarly publication that examines global gender issues and new strategies for the promotion of women empowerment and gender mainstreaming in various spheres of women’s lives, including education and ICT, economic participation, health and sexuality, mental health, aging, law and judiciary, leadership, and decision making. It provides a comprehensive coverage of all major gender issues with novel ideas on gender mainstreaming being contributed by men and women authors from multidisciplinary backgrounds. Gender perspective and intersectional approach in the discourses make this handbook a unique contribution to the scholarship of social sciences and humanities. The book provides new theoretical inputs and practical directions to academicians, sociologists, social workers, psychologists, managers, lawyers, policy makers, and government officials in their efforts at gender mainstreaming. With a wide range of conceptual richness, this handbook is an excellent reference guide to students and researchers in programs pertaining to gender/women's studies, cultural studies, economics, sociology, social work, medicine, law, and management.

Empowering Women by Carmen Diana Deere,Magdalena León de Leal Pdf

The expansion of married women's property rights was a main achievement of the first wave of feminism in Latin America. As Carmen Diana Deeere and Magdalena Leon reveal, however, the disjuncture between rights and actual ownership remains vast. This is particularly true in rural areas, where the distribution of land between men and women is highly unequal. In their pioneering, twelve-country comparative study, the authors argue that property ownership is directly related to women's bargaining power within the household and community, point out changes resulting from recent gender-progressive legislation, and identify additional areas for future reform, including inheritance rights of wives.

Women Empowerment by Shakila Hegde,Nagappa Gowda K Pdf

There are some wonderful monographs which deal with the issues of women at the national and global level, but no work of their equivalent has been produced so far with the exclusive purpose of analyzing and reviewing the position and predicaments of women limited to the district of Dakshina Kannada. In this book, Dr. Hegde and Dr. Gowda make attempts to describe the subject of women empowerment in the district, the hurdles in the way of materializing it, and to suggest the general lines on which the various problems that confront women should be tackled in order to get a fairly satisfactory solution. Based on the detailed analysis of the working of women organizations towards realizing the goal of empowerment, the book draws on the districts’ literary sources to explain it in a distinctive way. The work will enable the reader to understand the subject in true perspective, as it is based on impartial survey of all the available data. Carefully researched and analyzed, this book will form an essential reading for all those interested on the issues of women empowerment and the contributions of the women organisations towards it in general and the DK district of Karnataka in particular. Traditional approaches to the empowerment of women, particularly in developing countries, tend to stress the primacy of poverty alleviation; this book attempts to explain, along with poverty issue, how other factors such as illiteracy, poor health, lack of opportunity to participate politically etc. fail the goal of women empowerment set in various programmes of the governmental and non-governmental agencies.

Women's Empowerment for Sustainability in Africa by Robert Dibie Pdf

This book uses an open, explorative approach to deal with the different aspects of gender discrimination and gender empowerment policies, as well as their impact on economic development and capacity-building in several African countries. It uses primary and secondary data to present the argument that, without the full input of women, sustainable development will not be achieved in many African countries. This book is the first text written by knowledgeable gender issue experts that understand the culture of, and lived and conducted research in, Africa. It provides many examples of the relationships between gender and economic development around the African continent, highlighting different processes and practices. As such, the contributors here illustrate the impact of weak gender policies, and the ability to adequately develop female capacity building that could lead to wide-spread sustainable economic growth in Africa. They also explore a wide range of new dimensions and variables that are commonly ignored by other text books on gender equality. The book will help graduate, undergraduate students and other readers to understand women’s policies in the past, present, and future by analysing and illustrating cultural, political and socio-historical contexts which have shaped women’s role in the economic and sustainable development of Africa.

Microcredit and Women's Empowerment by Aminul Faraizi,Taskinur Rahman,Jim McAllister Pdf

Using a case study of Bangladesh, and based on a long term participatory observation method, this book investigates claims of the success of microcredit, as well as the critiques of it, in the context of women’s empowerment. It confronts the distinction between women’s increasing wealth as a consequence of the success of microcredit programmes and their apparent non-commensurate empowerment, looking at two organisations (the Grameen Bank and the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee) as they operate in two localities in rural Bangladesh, in order to discover how enrichment and empowerment are often confused. The book goes on to establish that the well-publicised success stories of the microcredit programme are blown out of proportion, and that the dynamics of collective responsibility for repayment of loans by a group of women borrowers – usually seen to be a tool for the success of microcredit – is in fact no less repressive than traditional debt collectors. This book makes a contribution to development debates; challenging adherents to more closely specify those conditions under which microcredit does indeed have validity, as well as providing insights relevant to South Asian Studies and Development Studies.
