Health and Safety at Work by Edoardo Ales Pdf

The safety obligation in any employment relationship, enshrined in numerous laws and regulations, must necessarily absorb advances in medicine and technology. The law of health and safety at work is perhaps best understood as an ongoing process engaged in the making of a dynamic and effective regulatory framework able to cope with an ever-changing work environment. This book, an in-depth survey of the current state of health and safety law in Europe represents the work of labour lawyers involved into the Pontignano International Seminars and into the European Working Group on Labour Law (EWL). The seventeen contributing labour lawyers provide national reports from ten EU Member States, along with a chapter on EU law relating to health and safety and a concluding comparative analysis. Among the topics examined are the following: the concepts of 'health', 'danger', and 'risk'; employers' obligations to inform, evaluate, and monitor; rights and duties of workers' representatives with regard to health and safety at work; the obligation to carry out a systematic work environment management; reintegration efforts required from the employer and employee; instruments available to help the employer in the proper fulfilment of safety obligations; the interaction between health and safety regulation and the social security system; labour inspecti civil, administrative and criminal liability of the employer; specific legislation regarding pregnant women; protection of other vulnerable groups; moral harassment or 'mobbing'; sexual harassment; work-related stress the concept of pénibilité au travail; effect of a company's hierarchical structure on liability; and domestic workers and home-workers. For practitioners dealing with cases involving health and safety issues at work, this book will be welcomed as a thorough and up-to-date guide on available approaches. Of especial value is the detailed coverage of the scope of the safety obligation, the consequences of its violation, workers' representation, and the link between occupational health and safety and the fight against harassment at work.

Investing in Well-being at Work by European Commission. Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities. Unit F.3 Pdf

"As part of the EU's employment and social solidarity programme, PROGRESS, this publication 'Investing in well-being at work' looks at the psychosocial risks in time of change. There is a growing body of evidence of the potential negative effects that restructuring has on the health of workers and their families. Uncertainty and job insecurity also represent an important link between restructuring programmes and effects on employees' health (depression, absenteeism, difficulty sleeping ...). This leaflet highlights some of the central issues associated with organizational change, restructuring, health and well-being, and explains what can be done to prepare organizations and people more effectively for major changes. This publication is available in printed format in English, French and German."--Publisher's description.

The State of Occupational Safety and Health in the European Union by European Agency for Safety and Health at Work Pdf

The European Agency information project "The State of Occupational Safety and Health in the European Union - Pilot Study" is a first step to the development of a system for monitoring safety and health in the European Union. It aims at providing decision-makers at Member State and European level with an overview of the current safety and health situation in the European Union to support the identification of common challenges and priority areas for preventive actions. The project report identifies sectors/occupations most identified to be at risk to. The risks are categorised as physical exposures, posture and movement exposures, handling chemicals and psycho-social working conditions. The context of work and the occupational safety and health outcome were also given. Focal Points (Authorities nominated by each Member State) provided information on trends and needs for the development of additional preventive actions related to these risks. Emerging risks were identified as change in work organisation, stress, manual handling, use of new chemicals, violence and repetitive strain. Workers under the age of 18, older workers and workers in health and social work were identified as sensitive work groups. A CD-ROM (contents: Consolidated Report; National Reports and the Manual) is included with this publication.

Assuring the Quality of Health Care in the European Union by Helena Legido-Quigley Pdf

People have always travelled within Europe for work and leisure, although never before with the current intensity. Now, however, they are travelling for many other reasons, including the quest for key services such as health care. Whatever the reason for travelling, one question they ask is "If I fall ill, will the health care I receive be of a high standard?" This book examines, for the first time, the systems that have been put in place in all of the European Union's 27 Member States. The picture it paints is mixed. Some have well developed systems, setting standards based on the best available evidence, monitoring the care provided, and taking action where it falls short. Others need to overcome significant obstacles.

Nursing in the European Union by Sondra Z. Koff Pdf

Nursing in the European Union demonstrates how the European Union (EU) has refashioned the nursing world throughout the Member States via its power in many other policy domains. Volume 1 focused on the EU's impact on nursing education, regulation, and research endeavours. This volume focuses on real-life situations and problems EU nurses face?wages, stress, work environments, and dispute resolution?and places them in a comparative perspective. In this unique work, Sondra Z. Koff develops a profile of nurses' workplaces, highlighting similarities and diversities, challenges, and nurses' opinions. Though it has limited formal authority in the health and health care sectors, the EU has had a significant impact on the working life of these practitioners in areas such as employment options, industrial relations and their outcomes, organizational and environmental features of nurses' workplaces, collective action, and more.New policies and legalities are regulating the production, distribution, practices, and organization of nursing according to supranational standards. Koff helps to fill a gap in the literature, given the dearth of comparative, cross-national, book-length studies of the nursing profession. By adopting a framework focused on an institution, policies, and politics, Koff addresses these topics from the perspective of multiple actors, both national and international.
