The Companion to Our Mutual Friend (RLE Dickens) by Michael Cotsell Pdf

Our Mutual Friend (1864-5) Dickens’ last completed novel, has been critically praised as a profound and troubled masterpiece, and yet is has received far less scholarly attention than his other major works. This volume is the first book-length study of the novel. It explores every aspect of Dickens’ sustained imaginative involvement with his age. In particular its original research into hitherto neglected sources reveals not only Dickens’ reactions to the important developments during the 1860s in education, finance and the administration of poverty, but also his interest in phenomena as diverse as waste collection and the Shakespeare tercentenary. The Companion to Our Mutual Friend demonstrates the varied resources of artistry that inform the novel, and it provides the reader with a fundamental source of information about one of Dickens’ most complex works.

Works of Charles Dickens, Vol. 4 by Charles Dickens Pdf

Excerpt from Works of Charles Dickens, Vol. 4: David Copperfield As it was, I thought as little of it as I might. But my mind could not go by it and leave it, as my body did; and it usually awakened a long train of medita tions. Coming before me on this particular evening that I mention, mingled with the childish recollections and later fancies, the ghosts of half-formed hopes, the broken shadows Of disappointments dimly seen and understood, the blending of experience and imagination, incidental to the occupation with which my thoughts had been busy, it was more than commonly suggestive. I fell into a brown study as I walked on, and a voice at my side made me start. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Dickens at Work (RLE Dickens) by John Butt & Kathleen Tillotson Pdf

This book marks a new departure in the study of Dickens. The authors make use of first-hand evidence of Dickens’ actual methods and conditions of work; much of this evidence is examined and co-ordinated here for the first time. It includes Dickens’ detailed manuscript notes for novels, with a complete transcript of these for every instalment and chapter of David Copperfield. Seven other books are chosen, so that the different stages of his career and different kinds of work are well represented. The volume illustrates what modes of planning Dickens evolved as best suited to his genius and to the demands of serial publication, monthly or weekly; how he responded to the events of the day; and how he yet managed to combine the freshness of this "periodical", almost journalistic approach with the art of the novel.

The Speeches of Charles Dickens by Charles Dickens Pdf

Dickens was known as one of the best after-dinner speakers of his day. It was a period when elaborate formal dinners were the standard fundraising method for charities and other institutes, and the speeches at such occasions were printed by newspapers from shorthand reports on the occasion. Dickens himself did not use notes, but these eyewitness reports allow the reader to gain a very close idea of what he actually said on hundreds of public occasions throughout his career. The organisations he was involved with - here elaborated by extensive headnotes on his participation in each body - give key insights into his activities and thinking beyond literature which are much enriched by reading what he said about them to their members and supporters. As the editor states in his introduction, the speeches are in their own way as important an insight into Dickens as his letters. The late Prof. K. J. Fielding's edition of the Speeches is universally acknowledged as the academic standard version. Each speech was carefully collated from the original reports and any other available sources. Copious notes describe variations, suggested corrections, the context of each speech and further factual information where necessary to understand references made by Dickens. All of this has been preserved in this reprint, which makes the whole edition available for the first time since 1988. This edition is necessary reading for any serious scholar of Dickens or Victorian oratory, and will also be of great interest to anyone studying issues connected with Dickens such as nineteenth-century philanthropy, the 'dignity of literature' debates, transatlantic relations of the period or the changing statuses of novels, drama and journalism.

A collection of the three best Charles Dickens novels: A Christmas Carol, A Tale of Two Cities, and Oliver Twist. Charles Dickens was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime, and by the 20th century critics and scholars had recognised him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories enjoy lasting popularity. Born in Portsmouth, Dickens left school to work in a factory when his father was incarcerated in a debtors' prison. Despite his lack of formal education, he edited a weekly journal for 20 years, wrote 15 novels, five novellas, hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles, lectured and performed readings extensively, was an indefatigable letter writer, and campaigned vigorously for children's rights, education, and other social reforms.
