Africa's World Cup by Peter Alegi,Chris Bolsmann Pdf

Africa’s World Cup: Critical Reflections on Play, Patriotism, Spectatorship, and Space focuses on a remarkable month in the modern history of Africa and in the global history of football. Peter Alegi and Chris Bolsmann are well-known experts on South African football, and they have assembled an impressive team of local and international journalists, academics, and football experts to reflect on the 2010 World Cup and its broader significance, its meanings, complexities, and contradictions. The World Cup’s sounds, sights, and aesthetics are explored, along with questions of patriotism, nationalism, and spectatorship in Africa and around the world. Experts on urban design and communities write on how the presence of the World Cup worked to refashion urban spaces and negotiate the local struggles in the hosting cities. The volume is richly illustrated by authors’ photographs, and the essays in this volume feature chronicles of match day experiences; travelogues; ethnographies of fan cultures; analyses of print, broadcast, and electronic media coverage of the tournament; reflections on the World Cup’s private and public spaces; football exhibits in South African museums; and critiques of the World Cup’s processes of inclusion and exclusion, as well as its political and economic legacies. The volume concludes with a forum on the World Cup, including Thabo Dladla, Director of Soccer at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Mohlomi Kekeletso Maubane, a well-known Soweto-based writer and a soccer researcher, and Rodney Reiners, former professional footballer and current chief soccer writer for the Cape Argus newspaper in Cape Town. This collection will appeal to students, scholars, journalists, and fans. The FIFA World Cup 1930 - 2010 by Stefan Rinke,Kay Schiller Pdf

Content As Brazil 2014 will yet again show, the FIFA World Cup is a mega-event followed by billions of spectators around the globe. This volume is the first scholarly attempt to capture the history of the FIFA World Cup in its entirety. From the first World Cup in 1930 to the one in 2010 the tournament has exerted strong influences and acted as an important indicator of political, economic, social and cultural developments. In bringing together contributions by international experts from history, cultural studies, sociology and politics this volume explores some crucial issues linked to the World Cup: from the political exploitation of the tournament for domestic purposes to its economic ramifications for the host nation and beyond; from its role for national identity and national self-representation to its potential to realize transnational modes of identity and interdependence; from its role as a global media event to its impact on the commercialization of football on the national and transnational stage.

FIFA World CUP TM 2010 in South Africa: Short- and long-term impacts on tourism by Katrin Andrews Pdf

Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: After the era of apartheid, events, festivals and conferences provide exciting opportunities to market South Africa (SA) and its provinces, cities and towns as preferred tourist destination and to generate benefits for the local economy. The hosting of mega-sport events, such as the FIFA World Cup 2010 serves in addition with excellent public relations opportunities to attract tourists before, during and after the event. The exposure to international media and their audiences will have significant impact on the country s tourism industry and will contribute to increase growth and job creation, transformation and the alleviation of poverty. As a growing sub-sector of the tourism industry, the staging of events is also a great way to reduce the effects of tourist seasonality and is therefore becoming increasingly competitive. With a very positive forecast for tourism influx in 2010, SA requires in the preparatory phase and during the event a high level of professionalism to ensure the country s readiness and show its responsibility towards its people, neighbouring countries, soccer fans and the event itself. To induce sustainable benefits from staging the FIFA World Cup 2010, SA s stakeholders elaborated initiatives and programmes to support the countries overall economic objectives. SA will face challenges and setbacks, but it will prepare for the event diligently and host what is known the world s biggest soccer festival. In the following paper I will present the current position and future outlook for SA s tourism industry in chapter two. Chapter three will clarify the terms sport tourism and its general impact on the tourism industry. SA s experience with hosting sport events will also be depicted. After an introduction to the FIFA and the FIFA World Cup 2010 in chapter four, I will conduct a detailed presentment (chapter five) of the predicted short- and long-term impacts of this mega-event on the country s tourism industry. Herewith I will identify the related challenges and opportunities. Furthermore, in chapter six, the reader will get an elaborated summary of the current preparatory phase for the FIFA World Cup 2010, launched initiatives and projects focusing on tourist, economic and socio-cultural impacts in SA. With my conclusions in chapter seven I will complete the paper. Inhaltsverzeichnis:Table of Contents: Rights ProtectionIII Table of ContentsIV List of FiguresV List of [...]

South Africa's World Cup by Eddie Cottle Pdf

This groundbreaking book provides a critically informed analysis of the impact and legacy of mega-sporting events through the lens of South Africa's 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup and its associated developmental paradigm. It challenges mainstream thinking and mega-event praise singers by providing concrete evidence to show that this sporting spectacular was little more than a front for massive accumulation and extraction of wealth, alongside increased sporting and socio-economic inequality. Contributors to this volume examine the sports accumulation-complex, economic promises, construction companies, trade unions, strikes, international solidarity, the struggle to trade, sex work, climate change, as well as case studies on the building of individual soccer stadiums. Eddie Cottle is the regional policy and campaign officer of the Building and Wood Workers' international (BWI) for Africa and the Middle East. This is a timely reminder that the 2010 World Cup nation-building illusion in fact disguised a reality of greed, elite enrichment and nepotism - and left us with a terrible financial hangover.' Terry Bell, columnist at Independent Newspapers, Business Report, and independent economic/labour analyst Book jacket.

Development and Dreams by Udesh Pillay,Richard Tomlinson,Orli Bass Pdf

"Development and Dreams: The Urban Legacy of the 2010 Football World Cup considers the effects of South Africa's hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup. It is held that here lies the greatest potential benefit of the 2010 World Cup - a repudiation of Afro pessimism and an assertion of a contemporary African identity both at home and on a global stage. The contributors to this volume, both academics and practitioners, provide an interdisciplinary perspective on the probable consequences of the World Cup for the economy of South Africa and its cities, on infrastructure development, and on the projection of African culture and identity. Attention is given to a range of topics including the management, costs and benefits associated with the 2010 World Cup, the uncertain economic and employment benefits, venue selection, and investment in infrastructure, tourism and fan parks. The contributors then explore the less tangible hopes, dreams and aspirations associated with the 2010 World Cup and interrogate what it means to talk about an African Cup, African culture and identity. Academics, policy-makers and the reading public will find this book an invaluable companion as South Africa prepares to host the world's largest sporting event."--Website.

A History of the World Cup by Clemente A. Lisi Pdf

There is no sporting event more popular than the World Cup. For one month every four years, billions of people around the world turn their attention to the tournament. Fans call in sick to work, pack into bars to watch games, or stay home for days at a time glued to their TV sets. Nothing else seems to matter. In A History of the World Cup: 1930-2014, Clemente A. Lisi chronicles this international phenomenon, providing vivid accounts of individual games from the tournament's origins in 1930 to modern times. It features a glossary of terms, statistics for each competition, photos, and profiles of the most memorable—and controversial—figures of the sport, including Diego Maradona, Juste Fontaine, Franz Beckenbauer, Mario Kempes, Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, and, of course, Pelé. Though other histories of the World Cup largely ignore the United States' contribution to the competition, this volume highlights the progress of the American teams over the last several decades. Updated with a new chapter on the 2014 World Cup, profiles of those players who stood out in the latest competition, and revised statistical information, A History of the World Cup provides a fascinating read for fans of the game.
