Understanding World Religions by Irving Hexham Pdf

Globalization and high-speed communication put twenty-first century people in contact with adherents to a wide variety of world religions, but usually, valuable knowledge of these other traditions is limited at best. On the one hand, religious stereotypes abound, hampering a serious exploration of unfamiliar philosophies and practices. On the other hand, the popular idea that all religions lead to the same God or the same moral life fails to account for the distinctive origins and radically different teachings found across the world’s many religions. Understanding World Religions presents religion as a complex and intriguing matrix of history, philosophy, culture, beliefs, and practices. Hexham believes that a certain degree of objectivity and critique is inherent in the study of religion, and he guides readers in responsible ways of carrying this out. Of particular importance is Hexham’s decision to explore African religions, which have frequently been absent from major religion texts. He surveys these in addition to varieties of Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

Islam by John Kaltner Pdf

"Recent events have focussed attention on Islam, the often-misunderstood faith of one billion people. Westerners are showing a new openness to learning about Islam and other religions, in part perhaps because religion is arguably the single most important and volatile factor in geopolitics today. Islam needs to be understood on its own terms, John Kaltner argues." "This little Facet offers the most basic information about Islam in an accessible and sympathetic presentation. Kaltner portrays Islam as first and foremost a religion of prescribed practices - the five pillars of Islam. Showing the deep humanism of Islam and its most cherished commitments, Kaltner presents Islam through assertions that counter frequent misconceptions of the faith."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. World Religions and Islam by Hamid Naseem Rafiabadi Pdf

"To define religion is one of the very difficult tasks as every interpreter attempts to give it a subjective twist to suit his individual or community aspirations. However, there has been various definitions provided by scholars to this intricate enterprise. The idea of God formed in one generation by one set of human beings could be meaningless in another. Indeed, the statement "I believe in God" has no objective meaning, as such, but like any other statement only means something in context, when proclaimed by a particular community. Consequently there is no one unchanging idea contained in the word "God": instead, the word contains a whole spectrum of meanings, some of which are contradictory or mutually exclusive. Had the notion of God not had this flexibility, it would not have survived to become one of the great human ideas. When one conception of God has ceased to have meaning of relevance, it has been quietly disregarded and replaced by a new theology. Yet if we look at three religions, i.e., Judaism, Christianity and Islam, it becomes clear that there is no objective view of "God": each generation has to create the image of God that works for it. In this book I have attempted to present world religions in a very broader context vis-a-vis Islam. In the introduction Islamic response to world religions has been shown in a comparative perspective. There is an article on the secular challenges that have rendered religious phenomenon vulnerable to all sorts of attacks. Thus the book is a collection of valuable articles written by eminent scholars belonging to various religious denominations , and researchers and teachers of Islamic studies. This book is also meant to cater to the requirements of students of comparative religions and theology"--Dust jacket.
