Competition Policy and Intellectual Property in Today's Global Economy by Robert D. Anderson,Nuno Pires de Carvalho,Antony Taubman Pdf

The fast-evolving relationship between the promotion of welfare-enhancing competition and the balanced protection of intellectual property (IP) rights has attracted the attention of policymakers, analysts and scholars. This interest is inevitable in an environment that lays ever greater emphasis on the management of knowledge and innovation and on mechanisms to ensure that the public derives the expected social and economic benefits from this innovation and the spread of knowledge. This book looks at the positive linkage between IP and competition in jurisdictions around the world, surveying developments and policy issues from an international and comparative perspective. It includes analysis of key doctrinal and policy issues by leading academics and practitioners from around the globe and a cutting-edge survey of related developments across both developed and developing economies. It also situates current policy developments at the national level in the context of multilateral developments, at WIPO, WTO and elsewhere.

This publication presents comprehensive data on world trade in 2001 and a number of long-term time series, as well as considering the prospects for the year 2002. It provides comparable statistics of trade by: region; and sector, including agricultural products, mining products, manufacturing and commercial services. The appendices contain detailed data tables, including data on merchandise trade by product, region and major trading partner for the major trading nations for the period 1999-2001. The report finds that world trade saw an unexpectedly sharp downturn in 2001, falling by 1.5 per cent compared to an increase of 11 per cent the preceding year. This was the first decline in the volume of world trade since 1982 and the first decrease in world output since 1991. A decline in the major industrial country markets and the East Asian economies with a high share of IT industries, the problems in all major stock markets and the events of September 11 all contributed to this downturn.

Trade and Development Report 2011 by United Nations Pdf

What lessons have policy makers drawn from the global financial and economic crisis to reform the international monetary and financial system and the design of macroeconomic policies? The enthusiasm about system reform and a reorientation of macroeconomic policies has not lasted. Reforms of financial regulations are progressing slowly and only at the national level, monetary system reform is limited. After an interlude that some considered as a return to Keynesianism, the orientation of macroeconomic policy, especially fiscal policy, is back to business as usual. This will hinder a sustained recovery of the world economy and open the door for new financial crises. Thus, the rethinking of policies and reshaping the financial and monetary system remain an urgent task. The Report makes concrete proposals on how, and in which priority areas, to advance with the strengthening regulation of the financial sector and commodity markets, reform of the international monetary system, and the reorientation of fiscal policy.
