Writings of Nichiren Shonin Biography and Disciples by Jay Sakashita,Shinkyo Warner Pdf

This volume, the ninth project of the English Translation Committee of the Nichiren Shu Overseas Propagation Promotion Association (NOPPA), constitutes all twenty-three writings of Buddhist reformer Nichiren Shonin (1222-1282) included in the Nichiren Shonin Zenshu, Complete Writings of Nichiren Shonin, Volume 5: Biography and Disciples, published in Tokyo in 1993. The Nichiren Shonin Zenshu is a modern Japanese version of Nichiren's original writings, translated and edited with annotations by modern scholars of Nichiren Buddhism. Despite its all-inclusive title, the Zenshu is highly selective in that it takes into account only writings considered bibliographically authentic, namely those attested to by original manuscripts. Among such texts, those included in the Showa Teihon Nichiren Sh?nin Ibun, Writings of Nichiren Shonin Standardized in the Showa Period, compiled by the Institute of Nichiren Buddhist Studies and published in four volumes by Minobusan Kuonji Temple between 1951 and 1959, are considered the most authoritative, and they provide the basic texts for this volume.

Writings of Nichiren Shōnin by Nichiren,Zenchō Kitagawa Pdf

The Showa Teihon Nichiren Shonin Ibun (Writings of Nichiren Shonin standardised in the Showa period) compiled by the Rissho Daigaku Nichiren Kyogaku Kenkyu Jo (Center for the Study of Nichiren Buddhism) in four volumes and published by Kuonji Temple in 1952-1959 are considered the most authoritative collection of Nichiren Shonin's writings. Because of the difficulty of reading Nichiren Shonin's original writings, the Nichiren Shonin Zenshu (Complete Writings of Nichiren Shonin) were published in 1992 and 1996 to provide access for everyone in an easy-to-read modern Japanese form. In 2000, the Nichiren Overseas Propagation Promotion Association began the English translation of the 7-volume Nichiren Shonin Zenshu. Although this work is titled as the complete writings, it only contains the writings that are considered bibliographically authentic in light of modern scholarship. There are a few writings included in the 7 volumes that are of questionable authenticity; these are specifically indicated in their introductions. Volumes 1-5 are already available available.

Nichiren's Sangha Series, Later Disciples by Luigi Finocchiaro Pdf

Nisshin was from the generation of Nichiren disciples that had no direct connection with the founder or those who did. Only his teacher Nichiei was a disciple of someone who knew a person who actually met Nichiren. He was thus detached from any sort of direct relationship, yet in the XV century the presence of Nichiren was still very tangible. As other charismatic leaders in the Muromachi period, such as Shōjin'in Nichiryū and Genmyō'in Nichijū, Nisshin was greatly inspired by Nichiren's endeavors and those of other disciples who did not spare their efforts to emulate him. Nisshin tonsured within the Nakayama lineage and his formative years were indeed under the aegis of this tradition, where he became very inspired by the actions of Jōgyō'in Nichiyū, the third abbot of Hokekyō-ji. Nichiei as well as the fourth and fifth abbots at Hokekyō-ji have been very important for his upbringing as their own relationship to Nichiren was still concrete, albeit not direct. They had met a disciple of someone who actually knew Nichiren as it was the case of Nichiyū, a disciple of Nichikō who trained at Minobu directly under Nichiren. The level of inspiration was still huge and even if the legends about Nisshin's ordeals were probably produced post-facto by his successors, he was definitively an iconic and charismatic preacher.

Nichiren by Masaharu Anesaki Pdf

The Japanese Buddhist priest and author Nichiren is one of the most significant spiritual figures of his time, elevating the status and sophistication of Buddhism in Japan. Through his writings and records of the era, we learn of Nichiren's deeply-held conviction that he was a reincarnated Bodhisattva sent by Buddha to further establish the religion in Japan. Nishiren's efforts led to his being the namesake for Japan's branch of the Mahayana school of Buddhists. He established methods of religious education, the zenith of which were a number of teachings unique to the faith. Nichiren also corresponded with followers, offering condolences, advice and wisdom to those who sought counsel. All of these deeds are recorded in this well-informed biography, which describes how Nichiren lived through a tumultuous time in Japanese history. Persecutions by non-believers, the invasion of the Mongols, plus periods spent in exile, made Nichiren's life difficult. Despite such obstacles he managed to found his school of Buddhism, introduce comprehensive doctrines for the temple, and convert a great many Japanese to the faith before dying at the age of sixty. Later judged to be an exceptional figure, he received posthumous honors from Japanese Emperors, and his teachings remain popularly studied by students and adherents to Buddhism in modern Japan.
