Cell Cycle - Materials and Methods by Michele Pagano Pdf

During their lifetime, especially when growing and dividing, cells go through various steps of the cell cycle. Knowledge of the individual steps of the cell cycle will help us understand the development of a variety of diseases better, including cancer, and also to design new drugs against it. New techniques for studying the molecular basis of these processes have recently been developed and are described in detail in this manual. A glossary helps the reader to cope with the complex cell cycle terminology.

Xenopus Protocols by X. Johné Liu Pdf

A collection of standard and cutting-edge techniques for using Xenopus oocytes and oocytes/egg extracts to reconstitute biological and cellular processes. These readily reproducible methods take advantage of the oocyte's impressive protein abundance, its striking protein translation capacity, and its breathtaking possibilities for the assembly of infectious viral particles by single cell injection of multiple RNAs. The authors focus on the versatility of frog oocytes and egg extracts in cell biology and signal transduction, and cover all the major uses of oocytes/extracts as experimental models.

Molecular Methods in Developmental Biology by Matt Guille Pdf

The process whereby a single cell, the fertilized egg, develops into an adult has fascinated for centuries. Great progress in understanding that process, h- ever, has been made in the last two decades, when the techniques of molecular biology have become available to developmental biologists. By applying these techniques, the exact nature of many of the interactions responsible for forming the body pattern are now being revealed in detail. Such studies are a large, and it seems ever-expanding, part of most life-science groups. It is at newcomers to this field that this book is primarily aimed. A number of different plants and animals serve as common model org- isms for developmental studies. In Molecular Methods in Developmental Bi- ogy: Xenopus and Zebrafish, a range of the molecular methods applicable to two of these organisms are described, these are the South African clawed frog, Xenopus laevis, and the zebrafish, Brachydanio rerio. The embryos of both of these species develop rapidly and externally, making them particularly suited to investigations of early vertebrate development. However, both Xenopus and zebrafish have their own advantages and disadvantages. Xenopus have large, robust embryos that can be manipulated surgically with ease, but their pseudotetraploidy and long generation time make them unsuitable candidates for genetics. This disadvantage may soon be overcome by using the diploid Xenopus tropicalis, and early experiments are already underway. The transp- ent embryos of zebrafish render them well-suited for in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry, and good for observing mutations in genetic screens.

Xenopus by Abraham Fainsod,Sally A. Moody Pdf

This book focuses on the amphibian, Xenopus, one of the most commonly used model animals in the biological sciences. Over the past 50 years, the use of Xenopus has made possible many fundamental contributions to our knowledge in cell biology, developmental biology, molecular biology, and neurobiology. In recent years, with the completion of the genome sequence of the main two species and the application of genome editing techniques, Xenopus has emerged as a powerful system to study fundamental disease mechanisms and test treatment possibilities. Xenopus has proven an essential vertebrate model system for understanding fundamental cell and developmental biological mechanisms, for applying fundamental knowledge to pathological processes, for deciphering the function of human disease genes, and for understanding genome evolution. Key Features Provides historical context of the contributions of the model system Includes contributions from an international team of leading scholars Presents topics spanning cell biology, developmental biology, genomics, and disease model Describes recent experimental advances Incorporates richly illustrated diagrams and color images Related Titles Green, S. In Vitro Transcription and Translation Protocols by Martin J. Tymms Pdf

Most laboratories conducting studies that use molecular biology techniques employ in vitro transcription and translation systems as a routine part of their day-to-day research. The commercial availability of purified bacterial RNA polymerase and the availability of robust tra- lation systems has made in vitro systems attractive not only as an alt- native to the in vivo expression of genes, but also as good model systems for studying specific aspects of transcription and translation. Although fairly efficient eukaryotic translation systems have been established for a number of years, reconstitution of transcription in vitro has proved to be more difficult. Recent improvements in fractionation techniques and the cloning of proteins involved in transcription have made this a fast moving area of research. Considerable progress has also been made in recent years in developing in vitro systems to study transcription and translation in chloroplasts and mitochondria, together with systems for the study of protein import. In Vitro Transcription and Translation Protocols provides many detailed experimental procedures for prokaryotic transcription and translation systems, together with protocols for many key techniques used in the analysis of eukaryotic transcription. In keeping with the successful format of preceding volumes of the Methods in Molecular Biology series, step-by-step instructions are provided, together with extensive notes that cover troubleshooting and special tips considered important.
