Yearning for the New Age by Diane Sasson Pdf

This biography of an unconventional woman in late 19th Century America is a study of the search for individual autonomy and spiritual growth. Laura Holloway-Langford, a “rebel girl” from Tennessee, moved to New York City, where she supported her family as a journalist. She soon became famous as the author of Ladies of the White House, which secured her financial independence. Promoted to associate editor of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, she gave readings and lectures and became involved in progressive women’s causes, the temperance movement, and theosophy—even traveling to Europe to meet Madame Blavatsky, the movement’s leader, and writing for the theosophist newspaper The Word. In the early 1870s, she began a correspondence with Eldress Anna White of the Mount Lebanon, New York, Shaker community, with whom she shared belief in pacifism, feminism, vegetarianism, and cremation. Attracted by the simplicity of Shaker life, she eventually bought a farm from the Canaan Shakers, where she lived and continued to write until her death in 1930. In tracing the life of this spiritual seeker, Diane Sasson underscores the significant role played by cultural mediators like Holloway-Langford in bringing new religious ideas to the American public and contributing to a growing interest in eastern religions and alternative approaches to health and spirituality that would alter the cultural landscape of the nation. “[A] richly detailed biography . . . that will deepen historical understandings of New Age movements in America.” —American Studies

Ireland's New Religious Movements by Olivia Cosgrove,Laurence Cox,Carmen Kuhling Pdf

Until recently, Irish religion has been seen as defined by Catholic power in the South and sectarianism in the North. In recent years, however, both have been shaken by widespread changes in religious practice and belief, the rise of new religious movements, the revival of magical-devotionalism, the arrival of migrant religion and the spread of New Age and alternative spirituality. This book is the first to bring together researchers exploring all these areas in a wide-ranging overview of new religion in Ireland. Chapters explore the role of feminism, Ireland as global ‘Celtic’ homeland, the growth of Islam, understanding the New Age, evangelicals in the Republic, alternative healing, Irish interest in Buddhism, channelled teachings and religious visions. This book will be an indispensable handbook for professionals in many fields seeking to understand Ireland’s increasingly diverse and multicultural religious landscape, as well as for students of religion, sociology, psychology, anthropology and Irish Studies. Giving an overview of the shape of new religion in Ireland today and models of the best work in the field, it is likely to remain a standard text for many years to come.

The Holy Longing by Connie Zweig Pdf

"Longing is the core of mystery. Longing itself brings the cure." Rumi In every tradition, saints and poets speak of the soul's search for the beloved, the seeker's yearning for the divine. This holy longing, a secret feeling with many disguises, leads us to pursue religious discipleship, spiritual practice, romantic union, or an ideal community. It guides us to timeless wisdom and transcendent experience. But it also can go awry, when we misplace it onto objects, such as food, alcohol, drugs, or sex, believing that they will satisfy our craving. Or when we misplace it onto an authoritarian personality, believing that he or she will meet our unmet needs. If this teacher or priest abuses power, we encounter the shadow side of spiritual life. Whether the abuse is sexual, financial, or emotional coercion, we may feel forsaken and lose faith, even in God. The Holy Longing tells the stories of teachers in many traditions Sufi poet Rumi, Hindu master Ramakrishna, Christian saint Catherine of Siena whose lives unfolded as they followed their longing. And it tells the tales of many ordinary people Catholic believers, students of Zen and TM, followers of Trungpa Rinpoche and Rajneesh and their encounters with spiritual shadow. Finally, it offers wise counsel for rekindling the flame of faith-moving through the shadow to the light by reclaiming sacred parts of the self that were lost along the way.

Psyche's Yearning by Gillian Ross Pdf

PSYCHE'S YEARNING: Radical Perspectives on Self Transformation By Gillian Ross Humankind is being called to bring forth a new level of consciousness, a new story around what it means to be human . Gillian Ross has written a rich, evocative book about the journey towards liberation. She emerges from the lived depth of her own sacred autobiography cooked in the knowing of her heart and guided by the great books as read and understood by her wise eyes. It is both the story of us all and the story of your sacred autobiography. Read it and be inspired to realize the infinite joy, obligation and depth of your Unique Self. Dr. Marc Gafni, best selling author, rabbi and teacher of Kabbalah and World Spirituality. Besieged by the messages of consumerism, disillusioned with traditional religion, and faced with the possibility of planetary disaster, our souls are more than ever yearning for purpose and a sense of wholeness and holiness in a fragmented secular world. Weaving her text around the symbolic wisdom of the ancient Greek myth of Psyche and Eros, author Gillian Ross offers personally inspired guidance and inspiration on ways of transcending the pain and limitations of our alienated ego. She invites us to step into the transpersonal domain of the mystic and embrace our identity as a unique expression of a Transcendent Evolutionary Impulse. The Introduction, sets the stage for this with a quotation from the popular Buddhist teacher Sogyal Rinpoche; the aim of life is to embody the Transcendent. It could be said that the rest of the book explores what that means and how it can be achieved. Beginning with her own journey of transformation, including recovery from alcohol abuse, Gillian powerfully conveys the message that an awakened consciousness is no longer the prerogative of the saint or the shaman but a birthright we must all claim if we are to find the collective will to serve the earth community and its myriad life forms with wisdom, compassion and joy. Psyche's Yearning is an inspirational contribution to the growing recognition of the power of meditation as a source of health and wellbeing. Dr Samuel Sagan, founder of the Clairvision School of Meditation. She is the author of several successful relaxation, meditation and yoga CDs and two books on spiritual evolution, The Search for the Pearl and Is There Life Before Death? Gillian migrated to Australia in the sixties. She lives on a 40 acre property of great natural beauty in Northern New South Wales which she is nurturing as a place for spiritual retreats and as an educational Centre for Conscious Evolution. Meeting the Shadow on the Spiritual Path by Connie Zweig Pdf

A guide to rekindling spiritual inspiration after betrayal and disillusionment • Explains why we are drawn to charismatic leaders, what we unconsciously give away to them, and how to reclaim our inner spiritual authority • Explores how to recover from spiritual abuse or betrayal by a teacher or group, including breaking free of denial, projection, and dependency using psychology and shadow-work • Extends #MeToo into the spiritual domain and tells the stories of contemporary clergy and spiritual leaders who acted out their shadows in destructive ways, leaving their followers traumatized and lost Within each of us is a spiritual longing that prompts us to unite with something greater than ourselves, to awaken to our unity with all of life. Yet, no matter the spiritual path we choose, we inevitably encounter our own shadow, those unconscious aspects of ourselves that we suppress or deny, or the shadows of our teachers and their secret desires about money, sex, and power. Meeting the shadow can derail the journey, but, according to Connie Zweig, Ph.D., we can learn to recover from loss of faith and move from spiritual naivete to spiritual maturity. Calling on us to expand our vision of religious and spiritual life—and our vision of awakening—to include the human shadow, Zweig examines the yearning that sets us on the spiritual path, showing how it can lead to ecstatic, transcendent experiences or to terrible suffering by projecting it onto an authoritarian teacher, priest, or guru who abuses power. She tells the stories of renowned teachers—Sufi poet Rumi, Hindu master Ramakrishna, and Christian saint Catherine of Siena—whose lives unfolded as they followed their spiritual yearning. And she tells the cautionary tales of contemporary teachers of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Catholicism, who acted out their shadows in devastating ways, leaving their followers traumatized and lost. She explains how meeting the shadow is a painful but inevitable stage on the path to a more mature spirituality. She describes how to use spiritual shadow-work to separate from abusive teachers, reclaim inner spiritual authority, and heal from betrayal. With guidance for both inspired and disillusioned seekers, the author explores how to navigate the narrow path through the darkness toward the light, rekindle the flame of longing, and once again engage in fulfilling spiritual practice.

Apologetics in the New Age by David K. Clark,Norman L. Geisler Pdf

Many books have successfully defended Christianity against Western rational skepticism. 'Apologetics in the New Age' represents the first serious attempt by evangelical philosophers to answer Eastern pantheism in general and the New Age movement in particular. Teaming up with David Clark, Norman Geisler, one of evangelicalism's leading apologists, probes the pantheistic worldview and its relationship to the New Age movement. Pantheism, the authors write, constitutes the soil in which the movement grows. The notion that every person participates in the divine has found fertile expression in contemporary American culture. The American consciousness of the Eastern alternative has risen rapidly in the last few decades, the authors remind us. Christian apologists have been caught unaware.... For this reason, we believe that Christian apologists must turn their attention in a new direction by developing new arguments for this New Age.
