The Heart-Soul Axis in the Jesus Prayer and the Integral Yoga Sadhana by Marta Rubinart Rufach Pdf

The Jesus Prayer is a form of prayer that for centuries has been preserved and practiced by the Hesychasm, the eremitic tradition that is the direct inheritor of the Desert Fathers of early Christianity. Such prayer is deeply similar to the Integral Yoga spiritual practice or sadhana. Both traditions have a comparable understanding of the human being and both bestow a special role to the heart as the place for integration and purification of the psyche as well as of gnosis and union with the Divine. This dissertation proposes the term heart-soul axis to study the structural, functional, and phenomenological aspects of the heart. The main methodological tools are hermeneutics and the geometrical model or topological invariant of Panikkar to stablish homeomorphic equivalences enabling a valid integration of both traditions. In addition, the dissertation offers an autoethnographical narrative in which the heuristic process leading to a creative visual synthesis is disclosed.

The Globalization of Hesychasm and the Jesus Prayer by Christopher D.L. Johnson Pdf

The meditative prayer practices known as Hesychasm and the Jesus Prayer have played an important role in the history of Eastern Orthodox Christianity. This book explores how these prayer practices have spread from a primarily monastic setting within Orthodox Christianity, into general Orthodox Christian usage, and finally into wider contemporary Western culture. As a result of this gradual geographic shift from a local to a global setting, caused mainly by immigration and dissemination of related texts, there has been a parallel shift of interpretation causing disagreement. By analyzing ongoing conversations on the practices, this book shows how such disagreements are due to differences in the way groups understand the ideas of authority and tradition. These fundamental ideas lie beneath much of the current discussion on particular aspects of the practices and also contribute to the wider academic debate over the globalization and appropriation of religious traditions.

Bede Griffiths by Brother Wayne Teasdale Pdf

One of today's foremost mystics introduces readers to the thought of one of the most important spiritual teachers of the past century. Bede Griffiths—English Benedictine monk and lifelong friend of C.S. Lewis, who was his tutor at Oxford—wrote in 1955 to a friend: "I'm going out to India to seek the other half of my soul." There, he explored the intersection of Hinduism and Christianity and was a driving force behind the growth of interspiritual awareness so common today, yet almost unheard of a half-century ago. Wayne Teasdale, a longtime personal friend and student of Griffiths, provides readers with an intriguing view into the thoughts, beliefs, and life of this champion of interreligious acceptance and harmony. This volume is the first in-depth study of Bede Griffiths' contemplative experience and thought. Fully exploring the antecedents and development of Griffiths' theory that the Christian mystery can be expressed through the worldview of Hinduism, Bede Griffiths: An Introduction to His Interspiritual Thought is a vital starting point for any spiritual seeker who wants to understand the shared territories of these two great faiths.

Today, the Jesus Prayer is practiced all over the world in every Christian tradition. Simple in form, but powerful in its potential to develop and transform the heart, it becomes a way of life for those who practice it. Jesus Christ and Yoga by Shyam Sundar Goswami Pdf

Only through spirituality can man's meanness and smallness be conquered and his divine nature manifested. To transform materialistic influences requires a gigantic spiritual effort and living spiritual inspiration. This can only be achieved by a great spiritual master. Jesus Christ, who, by millions of people is regarded as an incarnation of God, came into our world to teach us spiritual truths by which we can be free from bondage and attain immortality. His teaching does not consist of mere words but is based on his own realization in silent prayer. His spirituality was not like something grafted on his personality; reality and strength were exhibited in his mode of life and his activities. He came to this world as the Divine Light to show the path which leads to God to human beings who forgot about him in their deep immersion in the vast ocean of worldliness. His spiritual life inspires us. This book is an attempt to study the teachings and activities of Jesus Christ for our spiritual development. Interreligious learning is the norm today, and we have much to learn from how people in other faiths see and interpret even our most fundamental and treasured beliefs. But we need to learn well; we need stellar examples of deep learning. Shyam Sundar Goswami's Jesus Christ and Yoga goes deep into the mystery of Jesus in great detail and with great imagination, drawing on every resource available to the Goswami. Jesus is seen differently indeed from this fresh perspective--even as yoga itself is transformed in the light of Christ the great yogi. Goswami's classic study, accessible once more, is now more timely than ever. Francis X. Clooney, SJ, Parkman Professor of Divinity, Harvard University Sri Goswami's remarkable familiarity with the teachings of Jesus, and his citations of corresponding teachings by the seers of ancient India, offer a significant learning experience for both Christians and members of Eastern religions. The notable resonance, albeit not complete, between classical yoga teaching and aspects of Christian theology and spiritual practice takes yoga far beyond being just a physical "feel-good experience" into being a means for acquiring divine knowledge and deepening one's relationship with God. Fr. Thomas Ryan, CSP, author of Prayer of Heart and Body, Meditation and Yoga as Christian Spiritual Practice
