Taiwan Literature: English Translation Series introduces to English readers the voices of Taiwanese writers and scholars, with viewpoints on their own literature, in order to improve understanding among readers and scholars abroad of the currents and tendencies of literature in Taiwan, as well as to enhance the study of Taiwan literature from international perspectives. In view of the importance of this task, starting from January 2011 the journal is published by the US-Taiwan Literature Foundation, a nonprofit public benefit corporation, as an institution to carry on research and translation of Taiwan literature in English, provide reading and teaching materials for libraries and schools, and facilitate cultural and educational activities. From July 2015, this journal, jointly published with National Taiwan University Press, will continue to carry out the long-term project of promoting Taiwan literature in English translation for an ever better presentation of the history and current state of literature as it has developed in Taiwan.

This book has been specially planned to both commemorate and celebrate this milestone, and we have invited University of California, Irvine, professor Bert Scruggs to serve as guest editor to assist with its preparation and realization. The issue is divided into two parts: the first part is dedicated to a review of the publication history of the journal, its manner of selecting works to publish, as well as its contributions to the scholarly field. There are also research essays that consider the works chosen for translation themselves. The second part of the issue commemorates my retirement after more than forty years of teaching at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The main objectives of my work have been the English translation and introduction of Taiwan Literature. We have, therefore, included articles that consider my poetry, English translation, and scholarly research.

Taiwan Literature: English Translation Series, No. 50 (Special Issue on Taiwan Fiction and ‘Realism’) During the early stages of its development, Taiwan’s New Literature was intimately connected with realism. The year 2022 is the one-hundredth anniversary of fiction writing in Taiwan, and also the one-hundredth anniversary of modernist literature in the English-speaking world. For the former, this is the one-hundredth anniversary of the publication of Chui Feng’s “Where Will She Go?” For the latter, it is the one-hundredth anniversary of the publication of James Joyce’s (1882–1941) novel Ulysses, and Anglo-American writer T. S. Eliot’s (1888–1965) poem The Waste Land. When the Alphabet Lab was first established, it also paid tribute to the contribution of modernism in the development of post-war Taiwan literature. In this special fiftieth issue on “Taiwan Fiction and ‘Realism,’” we once again identify and trace out the pathways and objectives of Taiwan’s writer apostles over the past one-hundred years.

Yeh Shih-t'ao (1925-2008) was an outstanding Taiwanese novelist, literary critic and historian of Taiwan literature. In the history of the development of contemporary Taiwan literature he occupies an incomparably important position. As a literary historian, Yeh's magnum opus is An Outline History of Taiwan Literature (hereafter Outline). It is a comprehensive account that treats the subject of Taiwan literature from the perspective of Taiwan. Although it is only an outline, the book has very special significance in the history of Taiwan literature.

Wang Wen-hsing is an internationally renowned modernist writer who has long been regarded by Taiwan writers as a bellwether of literary aesthetics. His reputation rests on his devotion to an innovative literary language and writing style, demonstrated primarily in his novels. His persistent pursuit of an ideal style has challenged standard aesthetic views of Chinese literary language and conventional reading strategies. He views writing much as he does painting, music, or any other art form: while acknowledging the importance of content, he foregrounds the form. His fictional works, therefore, are not only pieces of creative writing but also creative artworks; each word and sign should be appreciated like a musical note in a song or a brush stroke in a painting. This ideal pushes him constantly to search out a more precise method to describe a specific subject, and each new method he develops is added to the reservoir of Chinese rhetoric. Due to his peculiar approach, he writes extremely slowly. During the past three decades, he has been able to write only thirty-some characters a day. To date, he has published twenty-three short stories, one novella, three novels (the second novel is in two volumes), one one-act play, three volumes of essays, and numerous poems, prose works, translations, and pieces of criticism.

It could be said that Pai Hsien-yung is the most renowned and broadly recognized contemporary Chinese writer, whether in Taiwan, China, Southeast Asia, or any other region of the Chinese world. His literary activities, achievements, and status as an eminent writer within the context of Taiwan literature is a phenomenon worthy of study. Therefore, we dedicate an entire issue to exploring it.

For this special issue on “New Generation Women's Fiction from Taiwan,” we have specially invited Professor Lee Kuei Yun of the Graduate Institute of Taiwan Literature at Taiwan's Tsing Hua University to be guest editor and take responsibility for the selections. Because of space limitations it has been possible only to select twelve short stories by eleven woman writers. These writers were all born in the 1970s or later and their works were published in the year 2000 or later. Thus, they represent a period of social change in twenty-first century Taiwan and the spirit of the new generation. The introduction that we asked Professor Lee to provide is entitled “Trauma, esire, Contemporary Women's Voices.” Aside from giving a brief account of the eleven writers and their works, Professor Lee sketches “a number of writerly qualities that become perceptible… [that] represent the internal trauma, female consciousness, physical lust, cat-uman metaphors, and everyday life, etc.” In her introduction, what she particularly stresses is that the sexual desire depicted in these works exposes the internal wounds derived from private individual experience hidden away in the deepest levels of the female consciousness that are exposed for direct observation, and “… [from this] we can tease out a clear semblance of a feminine texture that reverberates with the unique sound of contemporary women's voices.” This then is one of the most important qualities of the new generation of aiwanese women's fiction. In the final analysis, trauma and writing about desire are two major themes of Taiwanese women's literature.

In the thirty years since the 1980s, a significant volume of creative work and research in Taiwan has been produced under the general category of nature writing. There have been conferences and proceedings, M.A. theses and Ph.D. dissertations, research articles, books, and anthologies. There are four representative and well-recognized writers in the field: Liu Ka-shiang, who has dedicated himself to birdwatching and nature writing; Liao Hung-chi, who is known for his writings on whale and ocean experiences; Wu Ming-yi, who has concentrated on butterflies and broken new ground in ecological writing; as well as Syaman Rapongan, who has devoted himself to reconstructing the ocean-centric culture of the indigenous Taos people. It is in view of all the above that this issue of the journal has been dedicated to “Animal Writing in Taiwan Literature.” Recalling that our publication has a mission to “introduce the voices of Taiwan literature from recent publications to English readers, and especially to introduce the views of Taiwanese writers and scholars regarding their own literature,” we have asked Professor Chia-ju Chang of Brooklyn College to be guest editor of this special issue. The works selected for translation here were recommended primarily by Professor Chang. She has chosen works that highlight the local characteristics of animal literature in Taiwan as distinct from international animal literature. These works refer to the geographical environment and to memory of the unique cultural history of Taiwan. The two stories by Wu Ming-yi, “Koxinga” and“The Compass of the Soul,” are excellent examples of this. Lee Chiao's“A Sacrifice to the Asuras” was originally intended for the special issue on the author (No. 36, July 2015), but it turned out to be very appropriate for this issue on animal writing in Taiwan as it ponders animal life from a philosophical perspective. Furthermore, three poems related to animal writing by Prof. Tu are collected in this issue. “A-he, A-he,” about a hippo, concerns attitudes toward animals as well as environmental consciousness and animal protection in Taiwan. “My Grief ” expresses the close relationship between a man and his dog. And the third poem, “Reincarnation of the Three Realms—After watching the movie God Man Dog,” considers the Buddhist concept of incarnation in the three realms of life, echoing Lee Chiao's Buddhist philosophy on life beyond this life.

The latest special issue of Taiwan Literature: English Translation Series focuses on the short stories written by Wang Chen-ho not only to reveal his leading role in the Nativist literature that rose in Taiwan during the 1990s, but to introduce his works in the unique local language of Taiwan for English language readers. In this special issue on Wang Chen-ho, seven stories were selected for translation: “The Winter That Year,” “Two Tigers,” “Little Lin Comes to Taipei,” “She Really Can Put Curses on People,” “Sulan's Gonna Get Married,” “The Mouse Serves a Guest Tea,” and “Miss Sulan's Gonna Get Married—A Lifetime of Marital Bliss.” These seven stories span the two periods of Wang's works mentioned above. The first five belong to the first period of Naturalism, while the last two break away from Naturalism to embrace broader themes, even containing a lot of comedy, as in the final story, “Miss Sulan's Gonna Get Married—A Lifetime of Marital Bliss.”

This issue contains the verse of twenty-four poets. From 1924, when Hsieh Chun-mu first published four “Poems in Imitation,” the development of new poetry in Taiwan has a history of almost one hundred years. The roots of new poetry in Taiwan with its “twin flower bulbs,” to use the phrase coined by Chen Chien-wu, has now bloomed and borne fruit. It manifests diversified themes, and places great stress on both artistic expression and social concern. It recognizes globalization as the major trend of the times, and maintains a dynamic balance between nativist consciousness and the ensibilities of the Chinese cultural diaspora. Taiwan literature and its new poetry written in Chinese should have a place in the Chinese world community,as well as in the history of world literature. Limited by the space allowed for the journal, we could only select works related to “local” and “quotidian” writing. Yet we hope to observe through these works the manner in which the unique charm and gracefulness of contemporary poetry from Taiwan has blossomed in the garden of world literature.

The New Generation of Taiwan writers, born after 1970, has unquestionably established a distinguished presence in today’s literary circles, and they continue to scale the creative peaks. This issue is entitled, “Special Issue on the New Generation Writers,” and is intended to locate these works within the context of the development of Taiwan literature so that we may observe the special qualities they have brought to literary modulation and generational change. We have also attempted to summarize in stages the imagination/composition that this new generation has projected on a period of history and on their generation.

This very special issue of Taiwan Literature: English Translation Series is dedicated to the life work of the journal's founder and main editor, Tu Kuo-ch'ing. Apart from his important role in the promotion of Taiwan literature, Professor Tu is a celebrated and much-studied poet who has been one of the most significant poets in the Modernist poetry movement in Taiwan since the 1960s. However, very little of his work is available to English language readers. This is unfortunate for both historic and aesthetic reasons. Therefore, it is our intention with this special issue to provide a representative selection of Tu's poetic oeuvre, as well as a number of studies of his verse in English translation. Our hope is that in this way readers outside of the Chinese-speaking world will be afforded the opportunity both to enjoy Tu's outstanding accomplishment as a poet and to gain an understanding of his contribution to the development of Modernist verse in the Chinese language.

Yang K'uei (1906-1985), the first Taiwanese writer recognized in the literary circles of Japan during the period of Japanese rule, referred to himself as a “humanitarian socialist.” He was a pragmatic author who used his literary works to pursue the realization of his ideals, while throwing himself into the farmers and laborers movement as well as promotion of social, political and cultural reforms. For this special issue on Yang K’uei, we thank Professor Yang Tsui (Yang K’uei’s granddaughter) for her recommendation of works, from which we selected eight stories with particular consideration to both the theme and the literary quality of the works, as well as to which works are most representative of Yang K’uei’ fiction. Among them, “Behind the Increases of Production” and “Clay Dolls” are translated from the Japanese texts into English for the first time. The translation of “Mother Goose Gets Married,” published earlier in Journal No. 20, January 2007, was based on the Chinese texts, and in this issue we have purposely provided a new version based on the Japanese texts. Since Yang K’uei’s works have often been revised by the author, we have responded to the critic Chang Heng-hao’s appeal to “keep its true features,” as stated in his article, “Cun qi zhenmao—tan ‘Songbaofu’ yiben jiqi yanshen wenti.” [Keep Its True Features— On Translations of ‘Newspaper Carrier’ and the Issues Derived.] For reference convenience, we have reprinted the translation of “The Newspaper Carrier” published in the journal, which was carefully translated from the original text by Robert Backus. This version is hopefully close to the original features and will provide a reference point for a comparative study of the different versions of Yang K’uei’s works in Japanese, Chinese, and English.

Taiwan Literature: English Translation Series, No. 47 by Anonim Pdf

Apart from “new poetry” composed in the vernacular language, the tradition of classical poetry originating in China has also been maintained in Taiwan. We cannot ignore the fact that those poets who continued to compose classical verse, as well as the activities of their poetry societies, are yet another aspect of the diversity of Chinese-language poetic development in Taiwan which at the same time has unique local characteristics. Professor Huang's organization of the issue includes an introductory essay, entitled “Poems that Speak of Taiwan—Speaking of Taiwan Poetry” in which she gives a brief summary of the historical background and special character of the development of classical poetry in Taiwan. According to her careful plan, Professor Huang divided the poems translated for this special edition into six thematic sections: 1) Taiwan and Taiwanese in the Interstices of History (6 poems) 2) Crossing the Ocean to Taiwan, Putting Down Roots that Grow Along with Chinese Culture (5 poems) 3) Poems on the Aesthetics of Natural Landscape Scenery (6 poems) 4) Climate, Natural Resources, and Food (6 poems) 5) Folk Customs, Festivals, and Sacrificial Ceremony (4 poems) 6) Poems Expressing Emotions, Sentiments and Criticisms (7 poems) In the poetry selected for this issue we see the rich, expansive content of classical Chinese verse from Taiwan. That verse manifests the responses of Taiwanese poets to their times, to nature, to places and to people. It also reflects the many faces of Taiwan's specific temporal and geographical background through depictions of local experiences and the local spirit.
