The American Working Class by Irving Louis Horowitz,John Carl Leggett,Martin Oppenheimer Pdf

The study of continuities and discon-tinuties in American working-class life represents a central concern in the literature on stratification and equality. This book, based on a 1975 Ford Foundation conference and updated to take into account the most recent developments, offers a sobering appraisal of the American working class, revealing the continuing gap between organized and unorganized workers despite the huge increase in the work force; the emergence of subclass structures between factory workers at one end and workers engaged in marginal occupations at the other; and the durability of pluralistic, multiclass politics within this large and amorphous working class. The volume is unique for several reasons: it focuses directly on the role of women in the labor force, ethnic and racial divisions within the working class, and the place of organized labor in international affairs. The American Working CJass Today offers a penetrating and wide-ranging examination by leading social and political researchers of a range of problems -- from how data are collected and manipulated to what the future holds for American workers. The Equal Rights Handbook by Riane Tennenhaus Eisler Pdf

Riane Eisler’s Handbook is a beautifully and concisely written book about one of the most important social movements of our times. She presents the case for the ERA as a matter of simple justice. The Equal Rights Handbook has been hailed as: "...a wonderful book. You’ve done an enormous job in winning the fight for equality. Your work will be used, by me and by others, in this long hard struggle for simple decency – the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment." -Alan Alda "Riane Eisler has written the definitive book on the ERA." -Erica Jong "At last the significance and impact of ERA as law has been made clear by an attorney and legal authority who is also a woman, a mother, and who can write!" -Carol Burnett "...demonstrates that ERA is the missing link in our struggle to become a fully democratic nation. It is basic reading for every American woman." -Nancy Neuman, ERA Chair, League of Women Voters "...clears up the distortions leveled against the Equal Rights Amendment and provides essential information on organizing and fund-raising to promote equality for women." – Ruth Hinerfeld, President, League of Women Voters "...answers the misleading charges about ERA. More importantly, it answers the hard questions raised by those whose minds can be changed. At a crucial time, the Equal Rights Handbook is a necessary companion to help win ratification." -David Cohen, President, Common Cause

Women and the Public interest by Jessie Bernard Pdf

Jessie Bernard, in this serious book, pulls into an analytic framework the research, theory, and polemics about the status and problems of women as they relate to public policy. With a scholarly, deeply concerned eye, the author comprehensively examines areas of public interest, human resource development and utilization, self-fulfillment and sex roles, and the women's liberation movement. Bernard argues that sexual division of labor is at odds with the "general welfare" provision of the Constitution, and that artificial sexual allocation of function impedes the "pursuit of happiness" mandate of the Declaration of Independence. Avoiding both the shrillness of political rhetoric about women's rights and the dullness of an impersonal research paper, Bernard writes knowledgeably and sympathetically about what women can and should do to change public policy and achieve their goals. She combs the sociological and related literatures to document and analyze women's special burdens and disadvantages in American society and concludes that a radical redrawing of sex roles is necessary. A generally positive discussion of the recent women's liberation movement, including portraits of some of its leaders drawn from personal interviews, is also included. Designed for all readers, the book can readily serve as an overview of the historical roots of the women's movement. It provides excellent reading for courses in social psychology and sociology. Guidance counselors and personnel directors will find this book of continuing use, in their practical activities on behalf of career-oriented women. Jessie Bernard (1903-1996) was Research Scholar, Honoris Causa, at the Pennsylvania State University. Her many books include Remarriage, The Sex Game, The Future of Marriage, American Community Behavior, and Social Problems at Midcentury; and, she has contributed numerous articles to professional journals. She was educated at the University of Minnesota and Washington University, and had a distinguished career that included the presidency of the Society for the Study of Social Problems.
