September 11 in Popular Culture by Sara E. Quay,Amy M. Damico Pdf

This book offers an exploration of the comprehensive impact of the events of September 11, 2001, on every aspect of American culture and society. On Thanksgiving day after September 11, 2001, comic strip creators directed readers to donate money in their artwork, generating $50,000 in relief funds. The world's largest radio network, Clear Channel, sent a memo to all of its affiliated stations recommending 150 songs that should be eliminated from airplay because of assumptions that their lyrics would be perceived as offensive in light of the events of 9/11. On the first anniversary of September 11th, choirs around the world performed Mozart's Requiem at 8:46 am in each time zone, the time of the first attack on the World Trade Center. These examples are just three of the ways the world—but especially the United States—responded to the events of September 11, 2001. Each chapter in this book contains a chronological overview of the sea of changes in everyday life, literature, entertainment, news and media, and visual culture after September 11. Shorter essays focus on specific books, TV shows, songs, and films.

The Red, White and Blue by John Gregory Dunne Pdf

“Crackling dialogue, gritty characters, a fierce, unblinking stare at acts of brutality.”—Anne Tyler, The New York Times Book Review. A brilliantly panoramic novel spanning a quarter-century of American life, John Gregory Dunne’s The Red White and Blue tells the story of California's high-profile Broderick family, a tale beginning in the tumult of the 1960s. The clan includes a billionaire San Francisco patriarch, his sons the celebrity priest and Hollywood screenwriter, and his daughter, wife to the brother of the American president. Rounding out the front-line cast is Leah Kaye, a politically radical lawyer once married to the screenwriter Jack Broderick, an ex-newspaperman and the book's narrator. The influence of wealth in American politics. A California agricultural strike. A South American election. The black-power movement. Hollywood movers and shakers. All of this and more is deftly navigated as Dunne sets his main characters and big-canvas forces in motion. Jack himself is pulled into the swirl, his ironic detachment proving insufficient bulwark against dramas that grow darker, more dangerous and more personal as Dunne’s epic unfolds. A robust, bitterly comic portrait of America in the Viet Nam era and after, with a storyline headed towards tragedy, The Red White and Blue — appearing here in digital format for the first time — is John Gregory Dunne at his most ambitious and far-seeing, his gaze sweeping from coast to coast and from decade to American decade.

Red, White, and Blue by Mark V. Tushnet Pdf

The first paperback edition of a classic of American constitutional theory. The book is divided into two parts. In Part I Professor Tushnet appraises the five major competing “grand theories” of constitutional law and interpretation, and, argues that none of them satisfy their own requirements for coherence and judicial constraint. In Part II the author offers a descriptive sociology of constitutional doctrine and raises critical questions as to whether a grand theory is necessary, is it possible to construct a coherent, useful grand theory, and is construction of an uncontroversial grand theory possible? Professor Tushnet’s new Afterword is organized in parallel fashion to the original text. Part I offers a new survey of the contemporary terrain of constitutional interpretation. Part II provides an extended discussion of the most prominent of contemporary efforts to provide an external analysis of constitutional law, the idea of regime politics. This includes discussion of major court decisions, including Bush v. Gore and Citizens United.

Red, White, and Who by JoAnn Morris Matthews Pdf

RED, WHITE & WHO is situated in Granbury, Texas. Granbury boasts being in the top four in national 4th of July fireworks presentations. There are more than 200 shots fired from explosives to light up skies in Central Texas. Granbury is 35 miles south of Fort Worth, Texas. Growing up in Small Town, U.S.A. has advantages for younger and older generations. Participating in recurring activities throughout the year is fun, educational, and teaches young adults to cooperate with adult citizens in town to continue traditions. A Note to Reader at the beginning of the book is a synopsis of local history and “unsolved mysteries” in Granbury. The story centers around three pre-teen boys working to decorate prized bicycles for the upcoming 4th of July Parade. Days before the parade, bikes disappear. The boys band together to recover missing property. Hoping the thief is still in town, they also hope not to meet him face-to-face. The line of communication required among the boys, local authorities, and citizens is key to solving this mystery. For these young adults, dealing with diverse ages has not been necessary except in small groups. Uncovering clues proves difficult, particularly when they start their search with no clues. Red herring clues are sprinkled through the pages, making their job challenging. Recovery of prized possessions is an accomplishment. Life experiences learned through the process are meaningful and invaluable. Patriotic stories peak curiosity of young adults. Productive, cooperative citizens in a community rise from young adults introduced to good social and community values. In America, many people who would otherwise be without assistance can exist because of American volunteers. The U.S.A. proudly waves Red, White & Blue colors in honor of our active and in-active military, fallen soldiers, organizations, and people who mold the great nation we know and love...the reason we are known as the United States of America.

The Selling of 9/11 by D. Heller Pdf

The Selling of 9/11 argues that the marketing and commodification of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, reveal the contradictory processes by which consumers in the United States (and around the world) use, communicate, and construct national identity and their sense of national belonging through cultural and symbolic goods. Contributors illuminate these processes and make important connections between myths of nation, practices of mourning, theories of trauma, and the politics of post-9/11 consumer culture. Their essays take critical stock of the role that consumer goods, media and press outlets, commercial advertising, marketers and corporate public relations have played in shaping cultural memory of a national tragedy.

Greening the Red, White, and Blue by Thomas Jundt Pdf

Fallout from atomic testing, air and water pollution, the proliferation of pesticides and herbicides-all connected to the growing dominance of technology and corporate capitalism in American life-led a variety of constituencies to seek solutions in what came to be known as environmentalism. In addition to political and legal campaigns to effect change, an alternative form of civic participation emerged beginning in the late-1940s as growing numbers of citizens turned to what they deemed environmentally friendly consumption practices. The goal of this politically charged consumption was not only to protect themselves and their families from harm, but also to achieve social change at a time when many believed the government was placing the desires of business before the needs of its citizens. Politicians responded to the growing environmental concerns of middle class Americans, but, in the end, continual political compromises with corporate power meant weak laws and lax enforcement.

Tangled Up in Red, White, and Blue by Christine A. Kelly Pdf

In Tangled Up in Red, White, and Blue, Christine Kelly examines the role that progressive social movements might play in the recovery and expansion of democracy and justice in the new millennium. Kelly simultaneously combines an analysis of several modernization theses with respect to the role of social movements, with a unique sense of the way that the American ideological and institutional context has shaped progressive social movements, for better and worse, in our era. Kelly candidly confronts contemporary American radicalism from the perspective of a movement participant--included is a rare treatment of the 1980s student movement--but with an eye on the future. Tangled Up in Red, White, and Blue is a bold and sophisticated study combining the frequently divorced interests of political theory, institutional analysis, and social movement studies--both European and American.

The Puppet Master of Islam by Richard Bennett Pdf

To understand the dangers imposed upon the world by Allah, Muhammad, and the “angel of light,” you must look at Islam through the eyes of Christianity. Hal Lindsey, one of the true futurist preachers of our time, wrote in The Late Great Planet Earth that “there are only two sources of the supernatural: The God of the Bible (followed by Christians) and the god of this world (followed by Muslims) who is described as an ‘angel of light’” (2 Corinthians 11:14). This is the angel that visited Muhammad and introduced Allah into the world. In the beginning, Muhammad thought he was possessed. He spent years convincing himself that he was not. Many, however, believe that what Muhammad suspected about demonic possession may be true. It took a great deal of persuasion by Muhammad’s first wife, Khadija, to convince him that his encounter may have been divine as opposed to demonic in origin. She was instrumental in the birth of “the prophet” becoming a reality. Discover the evil of Islam and how we know that the apparition that spoke to Muhammad was likely an evil spirit in The Puppet Master of Islam.
