A Book of Birds (Classic Reprint) by William Playne Pycraft Pdf

Excerpt from A Book of Birds It is owing to the fact that these peculiarities are not generally known, that most writers of books on birds inaccurately speak of the legs and toes of a bird, when by the legs they refer really only to the long cannon-bones, which are clad in scales and often brightly coloured. A reference to the accompanying diagram should make this clear. Here we have the leg of a fowl. The first joint is formed by the hinging of the femur, or thigh-bone, with the tibia, thus forming the knee-joint. At the end of this tibia the joint with the ankle bone takes place but in the birds, as we have said, the two rows which these small bones make up disappear before adult life is reached. One row, as may be seen in fig. 1, is composed, in the half-grown bird, of a mallet-like piece, the handle of which runs up the front of the tibia or shank, and becomes welded to the shank while the other (fig. I), originally of several small pieces composed in the embryo, but now forming a thin plate, becomes welded on to the top of the bones of the foot. It is these last which are always, but wrongly, described as the leg-bones. Really, they answer to the bones of our own feet which lie between the ankle and the toes. The tibia, and the fused row of ankle-bones, is known as the tibio-tarsus. The toes present peculiarities, which will be described as we proceed. Talks About Birds (Classic Reprint) by Frank Finn Pdf

Excerpt from Talks About Birds IN this book I have made an attempt to talk over with young people who are fond of birds the points which have always interested me in my studies of them - and I have studied birds ever since I can remember. What I have always cared about in connexion with them has been their ways of living, their habits and tricks, and their minds and thoughts, so far as We know them to have any. I have also always paid particular attention to the dis tinguished and remarkable birds of all parts of the world, and not to the birds of one country only. I find that most people who are not specialists in ornithology, young people especially, share my tastes in bird-study, and this has encouraged me to pen these chapters. More Tales of the Birds (Classic Reprint) by W. Warde Fowler Pdf

Excerpt from More Tales of the Birds IT was close upon Midsummer Day, but it was not midsummer weather. A mist rose from moist fields, and hung over the whole country side as if it were November; the june of I8I5 was wet and chill, as June so often is. And as the mist hung over the land. So a certain sense of doubt and anxiety hung over the hearts of man and beast and bird. War was in the air as well as mist; and everything wanted warmth and peace to help it to carry out its appointed work; to Cheer it with a feeling of. The Natural History of Birds (Classic Reprint) by Robert Mudie Pdf

Excerpt from The Natural History of Birds Subsequently, when, in the course Of events which are not worth mentioning, I came pretty largely and freely into contact with men Of learning and talent, some Of whom have graven their monuments and left us, and others still remain, discharging duties of the first importance, with great ability and much public approbation, I still found, that though there was one species of knowledge in which they were greatly superior to me, there was always, when the subject was not merely technical, that is, supple mental to the reality, another species in which I had the advantage of them; and that, when we came to consider the thing itself, and not the mere view which had been taken of it, my knowledge, though it Often, indeed generally, went but awkwardly in mode and figure, went most directly to the point, This helped to convince me that how valuable soever their learning might be among the professedly learned, it was not exactly the best suited to the wants Of a working world. Tales of the Birds (Classic Reprint) by William Warde Fowler Pdf

Excerpt from Tales of the Birds There is a certain quiet bit of land, just where two midland counties meet, that is in winter a favourite resort Of the fieldfares. There they find all they need - the hedges are usually bright with hips, and with the darker crimson berries of the hawthorn the fields are all pasture-meadows, and the grass is tufty and full of insects; a little stream winds snake-like through the fields, hidden by an overarching growth Of briar and bramble. NO well-worn path crosses these meadows, and you may count on being undisturbed if you sit for a few minutes, to enjoy the winter sunshine and.
