Armenian Manuscripts by Bernard Coulie Pdf

A complete list of repositories of Armenian manuscripts in the world with full bibliography. Hellenists know the services rendered by the Repertoire des catalogues de manuscrits grecs of Marcel Richard and Jean-Marie Olivier. It is an indispensable heuristic tool, but also a witness to the development of codicology and cultural history. Such a tool was lacking for specialists of Armenian manuscripts, philologists, linguists, and art historians. Armenian Manuscripts. Catalogues, Collections, Libraries (in English) is the second edition, revised and updated, of the Repertoire des bibliotheques et des catalogues de manuscrits armeniens first published in 1992. It includes the four supplements published in the journal Le Museon in 1995, 2000, 2004, and 2019, as well as new sections devoted e.g. to the main copy centers of Armenian manuscripts. The book provides a full bibliography on all repositories of Armenian manuscripts in the world, public and private, large and small. It also gives many insights about the fate of Armenian manuscripts in the course of history: where and when they have been produced, mostly in medieval monastic centers, how they escaped invasions, fires, thefts and even destructions linked to the genocide of the Armenians, and finally how they ended up in private or public collections where they can be studied and admired today. Tables of concordance between current and old references enable one to locate manuscripts that are thought to have disappeared or to find more complete descriptions in an old catalogue than are given in recent lists. The volume also includes an impressive index of manuscripts.

Treasures from the Ark by Vrej Nersessian Pdf

Armenia was the first country to recognize Christianity as the official state religion in 301 AD, twelve years before Constantine's decree granting tolerance to Christianity within the Roman Empire. Ever since, Armenia has claimed the privilege of being the first Christian nation, and the wealth of Christian art produced in Armenia since then is testimony to the fundamental importance of the Christian faith to the Armenian people. This extensive new survey of Armenian Christian art, published to accompany a major exhibition at The British Library, celebrates the Christian art tradition in Armenia during the last 1700 years. The extraordinary quality and range of Armenian art which is documented includes sculpture, metalwork, textiles, ceramics, wood carvings and illuminated manuscripts and has been drawn together from collections throughout the world—many of the examples have never before been seen outside Armenia. In his authoritative text, Dr. Vrej Nersessian, Curator at The British Library, charts the development of Christianity in Armenia. This fascinating history is essential to an understanding of the art and religious tradition of Armenia, a country in which the sense of the sacred extends well beyond the purely religious, infiltrating the entire fabric of Armenian affairs to create a fascinating culture. This sumptuously illustrated book will be of immense value to anyone with an interest in Byzantine art and culture, the history of Christianity and the history of Armenia and the Middle Orient.

These volumes comprise a collection of papers by Michael E. Stone, written over a period of 35 years. Stone is a leading scholar in two different fields of research, the Jewish literature of the Second Temple period including the Dead Sea Scrolls, and Armenian Studies. So this collection includes essays relating to the origins and nature of the Apocryphal literature and its relationship with the Dead Sea Scrolls, as well as more specific studies devoted to themes that have interested Stone throughout his career, including Messianism, 4 Ezra, Adam and Eve, and Aramaic Levi Document. His Armenian interests have embraced the Armenian Biblical text, Armenian pilgrimage to and presence in the Holy Land and Armenian paleography and epigraphy. Papers included in the volumes, some of which were originally published in obscure venues, touch on all these themes. A number of previously unpublished papers are included.

Catalogue of the Additional Armenian Manuscripts in the Chester Beatty Library, Dublin by Chester Beatty Library,Michael E. Stone,Nira Stone Pdf

The Chester Beatty Library in Dublin has a world-famous collection of oriental manuscripts assembled by the late Sir Alfred Chester Beatty during the last century. A catalogue of the Armenian manuscripts was prepared by the eminent historian of Armenian art, Sirarpie Der Nersessian, in the 1950's. The present catalogue presents some manuscripts which Dr. Der Nersessian did not catalogue and those which entered the collection after her catalogue was completed. It was prepared by Michael Stone, Professor of Armenian Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Nira Stone, lecturer in Armenian Art at the same university. It deals in considerable detail with each manuscript, its codicology, its structure and its text (M.E. Stone) and a study of its illuminations (Nira Stone). The book contains onomastic and iconographical indexes. It completes the publication of the Armenian manuscripts of the Chester Beatty Library and will eventually be followed by a further volume dedicated to other Armenian holdings, notably old printed books and metal bindings.

At the foot of Mount Ararat on the crossroads of the eastern and western worlds, medieval Armenians dominated international trading routes that reached from Europe to China and India to Russia. As the first people to convert officially to Christianity, they commissioned and produced some of the most extraordinary religious objects of the Middle Ages. These objects—from sumptuous illuminated manuscripts to handsome carvings, liturgical furnishings, gilded reliquaries, exquisite textiles, and printed books—show the strong persistence of their own cultural identity, as well as the multicultural influences of Armenia’s interactions with Romans, Byzantines, Persians, Muslims, Mongols, Ottomans, and Europeans. This unprecedented volume, written by a team of international scholars and members of the Armenian religious community, contextualizes and celebrates the compelling works of art that define Armenian medieval culture. It features breathtaking photographs of archaeological sites and stunning churches and monasteries that help fill out this unique history. With groundbreaking essays and exquisite illustrations, Armenia illuminates the singular achievements of a great medieval civilization. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Verdana}

Cultural, Linguistic and Ethnological Interrelations In and Around Armenia by Uwe Bläsing,Jasmine Dum-Tragut Pdf

The geographical region of the Southern Caucasus, the lowlands between the Black and the Caspian Sees and the Armenian and Anatolian highlands is located on the peripheries of Europe from Asia. This region shares a common pre-history, with pre-Christian and pre-Muslim cultures and beliefs. The later periods, however, starting from the pre-Christian Iranian dominations, followed by the Arab conquest and the later campaigns of Seljuks, Mongols and Ottomans, had a heavy impact on the development of the region’s various ethnic languages and cultures. Nevertheless, many similarities can be found in the languages, cultures and religious traditions of the people living in this region. Armenia has often been a bridge between various cultures. Even though Armenians have succeeded in preserving their original language and culture through the centuries, many of their traditions and myths, their linguistic peculiarities, particularly in Armenian dialects, may be explained by an often long-lasting influence of other cultures, be it occidental (Hellenistic/Roman, later Byzantine and Medieval European) or oriental (Iranian, later Arab, Turkic, Mongolian, etc.) or even Caucasian. The Armenians have also left many traces in the languages and cultures of the Occident, Orient and the Caucasus. This volume gives an impressive approach to an interdisciplinary view of the linguistic and cultural properties which Armenians share with their neighbours.

The Hemshin by Hovann Simonian Pdf

The Hemshin are without doubt one of the most enigmatic peoples of Turkey and the Caucasus. As former Christians who converted to Islam centuries ago yet did not assimilate into the culture of the surrounding Muslim populations, as Turks who speak Armenian yet are often not aware of it, as Muslims who continue to celebrate feasts that are part of the calendar of the Armenian Church, and as descendants of Armenians who, for the most part, have chosen to deny their Armenian origins in favour of recently invented myths of Turkic ancestry, the Hemshin and the seemingly irreconcilable differences within their group identity have generated curiosity and often controversy. The Hemshin is the first scholarly work to provide an in-depth study of these people living in the eastern Black Sea region of Turkey. This groundbreaking volume brings together chapters written by an international group of scholars that cover the history, language, economy, culture and identity of the Hemshin. It is further enriched with an unprecedented collection of maps, pictures and appendices of up-to-date statistics. The Hemshin forms part of the Peoples of the Caucasus series, an indispensable and yet accessible resource for all those with an interest in the Caucasus.
