A London Child of the Seventies by M. V. Hughes Pdf

A London Child of the Seventies, which was first published in 1934, is a record of British author Molly Hughes’ memories of life as a child in London during the ‘seventies of the last century.’ In the warmth of her recollection, the image of “Victorianism” as something harsh, restricted and unnatural melts and vanishes. This was a happy life, not because it was luxuriously equipped, but because the spirit of human relationships in a large family was always of the happiest and because imagination learned to build, with the simplest of materials, a wonderland of adventure... “NONE of the characters in this book are fictitious. The incidents, if not dramatic, are at least genuine memories. Expressions of jollity and enjoyment of life are understatements rather than overstatements. We were just an ordinary, suburban, Victorian family, undistinguished ourselves and unacquainted with distinguished people. It occurred to me to record our doings only because, on looking back, and comparing our lot with that of the children of today, we seemed to have been so lucky. In writing them down, however, I have come to realize that luck is at one’s own disposal, that ‘there is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so’. Bring up children in the conviction that they are lucky, and behold they are. But in our case high spirits were perhaps inherited, as my story will show. “DON PEDRO. In faith, lady, you have a merry heart. “BEATRICE. Yea, my lord; I thank it, poor fool, it keeps on the windy side of care.”

A London Girl of the Eighties by M. V. Hughes Pdf

In A London Girl of the Eighties, which was first published in 1936, British author Molly Hughes vividly evokes the small, everyday pleasures of a close family life in Victorian London: joyful Christmases, blissful holidays in Cornwall, escapades with her brothers, and schooldays under the redoubtful Miss Buss. Her intensive recollection of college life at Cambridge and her first teaching jobs creates an easy intimacy with the reader and provides a fascinating glimpse into another world, full of everyday period detail, vividly and humorously told. “NONE of the characters in this book are fictitious. A London Home in the Nineties by M. V. Hughes Pdf

A London Home in the Nineties, which was first published in 1937, is the third volume in British author Molly Hughes’ entertaining and deeply moving autobiographical trilogy on her life in Victorian London. Here, Hughes recounts in loving detail her engagement to and married life with Arthur Hughes in the late 1880’s, bringing up a family of her own, as well as her work as head of the training department at Bedford College from 1892 until 1897, where she played an important role in expanding and rationalizing the teacher training curriculum. “NONE of the characters in this book are fictitious. The incidents, if not dramatic, are at least genuine memories. Expressions of jollity and enjoyment of life are understatements rather than overstatements. A Family in Wartime by Maureen Waller Pdf

During the Second World War the fabric of family life radically changed. Men left to join the front line, some never to return. Women entered the workforce on a scale not seen before, some to join the services, others to enter the factories. Mothers were separated from their children, or raised them in the absence of fathers. The Allpresses were an ordinary London family from Stockwell. Through their experiences this book tells the story of what it was like to live in those extraordinary times. What shines through the first-hand descriptions of the family members and other voices from the Home Front is their dedication to duty and fortitude in the face of aerial bombardment, as well as the family's desire to remain together through thick and thin despite the disruptions. The book paints a vivid description of how London prepared for and responded to war, from the organisation of Civil Defence and the evacuation of thousands of children, to caring for and re-housing those who were bombed out of their homes. Food and clothes rationing, popular entertainment and the wartime campaigns are all discussed, with evocative period photographs, posters and documents to illustrate the realities of life in a war zone and capture the spirit of the times."

Family Men by Laura King Pdf

Fathers are often neglected in histories of family life in Britain. Family Men provides the first academic study of fathers and families in the period from the First World War to the end of the 1950s. It takes a thematic approach, examining different aspects of fatherhood, from the duties it encompassed to the ways in which it related to men's identities. The historical approach is socio-cultural: each chapter examines a wide range of historical source materials in order to analyse both cultural representations of fatherhood and related social norms, as well as exploring the practices and experiences of individuals and families. It uncovers the debates surrounding parenting and family life and tells the stories of men and their children. While many historians have examined men's relationship to the home and family in histories of gender, family life, domestic spaces, and class cultures more generally, few have specifically examined fathers as crucial family members, as historical actors, and as emotional individuals. The history of fatherhood is extremely significant to contemporary debate: assumptions about fatherhood in the past are constantly used to support arguments about the state of fatherhood today and the need for change or otherwise in the future. Laura King charts men's changing experiences of fatherhood, suggesting that although the roles and responsibilities fulfilled by men did not shift rapidly, their relationships, position in the family, and identities underwent significant change between the start of the First World War and the 1960s.

Intervals of Hope by Christopher Canniff Pdf

Nicholas Dixon lives with his mother and brother in London, England between the world wars. His father, Wilfrid, once with the First Battalion, First Canadian Regiment in the trenches of the Great War, now works in the coalmines of South Leeds and rarely returns to his family. Armed with his father's wartime journal, a spirited imagination, and a taste for insurgency, Nicholas embarks on a quest to reunite the family. A journey that will forever alter his perception of his father, leading Nicholas to confront his own cowardice. Inspired by multiple interviews with a former WWII British Commando, whose father was in the trenches of WWI, and through eighty-five letters sent home during WWI by the author's great-grandfather, Intervals of Hope explores duty, responsibility, cowardice, abandonment, and the disparate paths to becoming a man of honour. "Canniff's description is as powerful as any writer I have ever had in the Humber course." ---David Adams Richards, Governor General's Literary Award winner and co-winner of the Giller Prize. "The constant interplay between father's journal and son's actions was brilliant. Full of human interest and emotion. Can't praise it enough." --- Gordon Schottlander, Veteran, British Infantry, Royal Berkshire Regiment, WWII

We Danced All Night by Martin Pugh Pdf

Bounded by the Great War on one side and by the looming shadow of the Second World War on the other, the inter-war period has characteristically been portrayed as a time of great and unrelenting depression. In Martin Pugh's lively and thought-provoking book, however, the acclaimed historian vividly shows how the British people reacted to the privations of wartime by indulging in leisure and entertainment activities of all kinds - from dancing and cinema going to smoking, football pools and paid holidays. He explodes the myths of a nation of unwed women, revealing that in the 1930s the institution of marriage was reaching its heyday, and points to a rise in real incomes, improvements in diet and health and the spread of cheap luxuries. The result is an extraordinary, engaging work of history that presents us with a fresh perspective and brings out both the strangeness and the familiarity of this point in time.
