Manual of Gesture by Albert M. Bacon Pdf

Excerpt from Manual of Gesture: Embracing a Complete System of Notation, Together With the Principles of Interpretation and Selections for Practice Agreeable sounds and harmonious action one addressing the ear, and the other the eye combine to perfect the orator. In the department of vocal culture there is no lack of text-books. Dr. Rush, in his masterly work entitled The Philosophy of the Human Voice, has furnished the most ample facilities for the cultivation of the vocal powers; and for those who find his book too elaborate, Prof. William Russell has published his Orthophony: or. Vocal Culture, in which the subject is rendered simple and practical. These, and other similar works, furnish the requisite means of acquiring the principles and rules of vocal culture. With respect to the department of gesture, however, the case is far different. The want of a complete text-book is seriously felt by the student of oratory. To this want the deficiency of public speakers quite generally, in regard to this subject, is mainly attributable. Among the writers of antiquity, Quintilian, in his Institutes of Oratory, has written the most and the best upon this subject. Rev. Gilbert Austin, an eminent elocutionist of London, issued in A. D. 1806 his Chironomia, a quarto volume of six hundred pages, more than two-thirds of which is devoted to the subject of gesture. This is the most valuable as well as the most extensive, treatise ever written upon this branch of oratory. The present volume is based upon the work of Mr. Austin. The system of notation here adopted is substantially the same as that invented by him, and contained in the Chironomia. Simplified Signs by John D.. Bonvillian,Nicole Kissane Lee,Tracy T. Dooley,Filip Loncke,Valerie Nelson-Metlay Pdf

Simplified Signs presents a system of manual sign communication intended for special populations who have had limited success mastering spoken or full sign languages. It is the culmination of over twenty years of research and development by the authors. The Simplified Sign System has been developed and tested for ease of sign comprehension, memorization, and formation by limiting the complexity of the motor skills required to form each sign, and by ensuring that each sign visually resembles the meaning it conveys. Volume 1 outlines the research underpinning and informing the project, and places the Simplified Sign System in a wider context of sign usage, historically and by different populations. Volume 2 presents the lexicon of signs, totaling approximately 1000 signs, each with a clear illustration and a written description of how the sign is formed, as well as a memory aid that connects the sign visually to the meaning that it conveys. While the Simplified Sign System originally was developed to meet the needs of persons with intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, autism, or aphasia, it may also assist the communication needs of a wider audience - such as healthcare professionals, aid workers, military personnel, travellers or parents, and children who have not yet mastered spoken language. The system also has been shown to enhance learning for individuals studying a foreign language. Lucid and comprehensive, this work constitutes a valuable resource that will enhance the communicative interactions of many different people, and will be of great interest to researchers and educators alike. Dictionary of Gestures by Francois Caradec Pdf

An illustrated guide to more than 850 gestures and their meanings around the world, from a nod of the head to a click of the heels. Gestures convey meaning with a flourish. A vigorous nod of the head, a bold jut of the chin, an enthusiastic thumbs-up: all speak louder than words. Yet the same gesture may have different meanings in different parts of the world. What Americans understand as the “A-OK gesture,” for example, is an obscene insult in the Arab world. This volume is the reference book we didn't know we needed—an illustrated dictionary of 850 gestures and their meanings around the world. It catalogs voluntary gestures made to communicate openly—as distinct from sign language, dance moves, involuntary “tells,” or secret handshakes—and explains what the gesture conveys in a variety of locations. It is organized by body part, from top to bottom, from head (nodding, shaking, turning) to foot (scraping, kicking, playing footsie). We learn that “to oscillate the head while gently throwing it back” communicates approval in some countries even though it resembles the headshake of disapproval used in other countries; that “to tap a slightly inflated cheek” constitutes an erotic invitation when accompanied by a wink; that the middle finger pointed in the air signifies approval in South America. We may already know that it is a grave insult in the Middle East and Asia to display the sole of one's shoe, but perhaps not that motorcyclists sometimes greet each other by raising a foot. Illustrated with clever line drawings and documented with quotations from literature (the author, François Caradec, was a distinguished and prolific historian of literature, culture, and humorous oddities, as well as a novelist and poet), this dictionary offers readers unique lessons in polylingual meaning.

Challenges and Applications for Hand Gesture Recognition by Kane, Lalit,Dewangan, Bhupesh Kumar,Choudhury, Tanupriya Pdf

Due to the rise of new applications in electronic appliances and pervasive devices, automated hand gesture recognition (HGR) has become an area of increasing interest. HGR developments have come a long way from the traditional sign language recognition (SLR) systems to depth and wearable sensor-based electronic devices. Where the former are more laboratory-oriented frameworks, the latter are comparatively realistic and practical systems. Based on various gestural traits, such as hand postures, gesture recognition takes different forms. Consequently, different interpretations can be associated with gestures in various application contexts. A considerable amount of research is still needed to introduce more practical gesture recognition systems and associated algorithms. Challenges and Applications for Hand Gesture Recognition highlights the state-of-the-art practices of HGR research and discusses key areas such as challenges, opportunities, and future directions. Covering a range of topics such as wearable sensors and hand kinematics, this critical reference source is ideal for researchers, academicians, scholars, industry professionals, engineers, instructors, and students.
