The boom of internet is causing another industrial revolution. It is necessary for Chinese airlines to develop E-business in order to keep their competitive advantages. China Southern Airlines is the first Chinese airlines to enter E-business sector and is fairly successful in Chinese civil aviation market. However, comparing with British Airways, current E-business strategy in this company quite falls behind. After a strategic analysis, it is clearly that E-business is a profitable strategy for China Southern Airlines and should be applied further. It is quite urgent for China Southern Airlines to enlarge and improve its E-business strategies so that it can consolidate its leading position in this market segment. Therefore, some reasonable future strategic choices are put forward and a recommendation is given. On the other hand, the explosion of Chinese economy provides a rapid growth of air traffic world widely. Contemporary Issues Shaping China’s Civil Aviation Policy by Alan Williams Pdf

The emergence of China as a future major participant in international aviation raises some interesting questions, especially from a strategic policy perspective. The progressive shift from a command to a mixed market economy under the central leadership of the Beijing administration now finds itself faced with the needs to balance a strategic duality in the context of the role of China's civil aviation industry. In a very real sense this situation requires the design and accommodation of a growing role for China's mainstream carriers within the operational context of the need to meet the complex challenges from increasing international market competition. In parallel with such major external pressures, central government must also accommodate domestic priorities with regard to internal economic development. The fruits of economic progress as a function of market reform are commonly understood to have positively reshaped the live of only a proportion of the national population to date. The need to create greater access to economic growth for the more remote western and northern provinces has required that the rapid development of airports become a factor in the planning and allocation of developmental priorities. To complicate matters further, prevailing requirements of airspace defence remain a major parameter within the larger context of national aviation policy. This book explores the political, economic and strategic issues raised by the inevitable tension between the domestic and international aspects of Beijing's current civil aviation strategy. It also seeks to identify some of the problems that face the industry as a key sector in the larger context of macroeconomic reform and the further pressures now being exerted by China's membership of the WTO.

Chinese aviation industry by Sebastian Wagner Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Instructor Plans: Transportation Professions / Air Transportation / Logistics, grade: 1,7, University of Applied Sciences Wildau (Wildau Institute of Technology), course: Aviation Management 2012, language: English, abstract: Actually, a country where flying is affordable for only top 8 percent of the population is beneath any notice. But not in the case of the country called China. Recent years have seen a thriving Chinese economic development which has brought a huge demand for aviation business. The aviation market in China is expected to double in size about every eight years. As expansive as the market may seem today, it is still in its infancy. As a result, business aviation, private aviation, emergency, industrial aviation are expected to embrace for substantial growth potential. Today, the Chinese economic miracle has been fuelled in large part by a flood of foreign investment. However, the influence of Chinese government is extremely present and restricting the aspiring industry. Since China has been a socialist country, the leaders in Beijing play a predominant role in nearly every single sectors of Chinese economy. In contrast, government policies have been very supportive of the industry and, unsurprisingly, it has yielded positive results. The aim of this research paper is to analyze present capability and potential of Chinese aviation industry and to identify its future challenges. The key questions to be answered in this context are: What are recent developements of Chinas aviation policies focusing on airline consolidation and how does the domestic airline and manufacture framework look like? Do endemic manufacturers have the ability to become a serious competitor to persist on the global stage and what are current challenges of Chinese Aviation industry? In order to answer these questions I am goiig to examine the evolution of Chinas aviation polices focusing on airline consolidation and the efforts in constructing a global and competitive manufacturer environment. Based on the historical development of Chinese aviation industry I will assess present market conditions and possible perspectives of aviation in China. An overview of the enormous air transport growth including aviation manufacturer expansions is given. In the second step I am going to clarify whether the emerging aviation industry in China has the potential to become a serious global competitor on the manufacturer market. Furthermore I will assess selected current collaboration programmes of the Chinese aviation manufactures in order to answer whether Chinas aviation industry will be able to spread ones wings anytime soon.

How the Macroeconomic Environment of the Airline Industry Affects the Strategic Decision of Boing Vs Airbus by Christian Uwagwuna Pdf

Document from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 72, De Montfort University Leicester (De Montfort University Leicester UK), course: Strategic Management, language: English, abstract: This paper discusses the external economic factors affecting the strategic decision of airline industry and how this decision in turn, affect the market forecast of the aircraft manufacturing industry. Various business issues affect airlines operation either directly and indirectly, and these issues affect the strategic decision of the airline industry. The present economic crisis, instability in aviation fuel price, and environmental factors (such as the recent volcanic ashes and snow) has further shrunk business in the airline industry and thereby increasing competitive rivalry. Although the future projected growth by the airline industry look promising, factors affecting airline businesses can make it daunting. Strategic decisions however, will help the airlines to maximize this positive forecast. To make these decisions, it is vital for the origination to understand the macro-economic environment affecting the airline industry. [...]

Case Study Japan Airlines by Svenja Stellmann Pdf

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, Northumbria University, course: Strategic Management and Leadership, language: English, abstract: Japan Airlines Corporation (JAL) is the leading full-service airline in Asia operating in the domestic and international passenger air-transport industry. However, in 2009 JAL's financial situation is alarming. 2009 was completed by a ¥51bn operating loss, representing a decrease of ¥140bn from previous year. In comparison, JAL's major competitor All Nippon Airways manages to stay in the black. This means JAL's competitive position is clearly in danger. Even worse - if JAL does not find a new strategic option immediately they are in danger of going bankrupt soon. This paper intends to find such a strategic option to guarantee future success of the airline. A thorough strategic analysis including an internal and external analysis is used to find out the key strategic issues. Afterwards three possible strategic options are discussed. The most promising option is put forward and its implementation issues are thoroughly discussed.

Air Cargo in Mainland China and Hong Kong by Anming Zhang,George W.L. Hui,Lawrence C. Leung,Waiman Cheung Pdf

Air traffic and the aviation industry have grown rapidly on the Chinese mainland in the two and a half decades since China's open door policy. Accession to the WTO will further stimulate trade and foreign direct investment (FDI), intensifying the demand for air cargo services. It will also open up the Chinese economy to foreign participation in the transportation and logistics sectors, making these sectors more competitive and efficient. This book provides a systematic and comprehensive study of China's air cargo industry as well as its policy evolution. It covers the sources and destinations of air cargo in mainland China and Hong Kong: whence it comes and where it goes to. The major hubs of the transportation network - Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Guangzhou - are discussed one by one. The virtual aspects of the network at these hubs in terms of IT applications, preparedness, and needs are examined and compared. Though the subject matter of this book is air cargo, there is considerable coverage of the aviation industry and policy on the mainland and Hong Kong. Changes have been happening so fast there are few books and publications that cover them systematically and comprehensively. Readership includes business executives in airfreight companies, airports and airlines, logistics specialists, aviation university lecturers and students.

Development of Airfreight Hubs in the Southern Chinese Pearl River Delta - A Comparative Analysis by Jana Schebera Pdf

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2006 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 1.0, Free University of Berlin (Sinologie, Betriebswirtschaftslehre), 38+33Online entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Airfreight is an essential and highly sophisticated part of an economy's logistics infrastructure and has become one of the most effective tools to explore world markets. The overall trend towards fast reliable delivery and the transformation of China's economy along with the value chain of production, have boosted demand for air transportation. Due to these developments, the air cargo market, which is still at low levels particularly in domestic transportation, is one of the fastest growing markets in China. The regional focus of this study is on the economic powerhouse of China, the Greater Pearl River Delta (GPRD) located in the southern province of Guangdong including Hong Kong and Macao. In many respects this is one of the most interesting economic entities of the world. Economy and infrastructure are integrated on a very high level. The GPRD features many extremes: its strong economic power, its rapid growth, the highest in China for many years, its population density and last but not least, its aviation landscape. Within radial distance of about 100 km, five international airports are at service, creating the highest airport density in the world. Three of these airports are among China's top five airports. The clear leader among them is Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), a major hub in Asia featuring the world's highest international air cargo throughput for many years. Its dominant counterpart for domestic traffic is located some 100 km north in the very heart of the PRD, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (GBIA). The strong air cargo business of HKIA, that is largely fed by PRD freight has been watched closely by Mainland administrations. Liberalised air traffic policy in recent years has rapidly expanded China's own interna

The Australian airline industry and the case of OzJet by Marco Hierling Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3 (86%), The University of Sydney, language: English, abstract: This case study provides an overview of the Australian airline industry and its competitors with a focus on the question why OzJet failed. The first chapter will give an insight on the main task and on the case study structure, concentrating on a brief outline of OzJet and the Australian airline industry. In chapter two, the external environment OzJet had to face is examined, including the analysis of the main trends and its competitive intelligence through scanning and monitoring. Furthermore, it presents a survey of the environment using Porters five forces, completing with a brief conclusion of the threats and opportunities in the Australian airline industry. Chapter three gives information of OzJet’s internal environment from a resource based view that examines the collection of its tangible and intangible resources, as well as its organizational capabilities shaping OzJet’s competitive position. This chapter ends with a short conclusion about OzJet’s strengths and weaknesses. Finally, it is discussed why OzJet failed and a strategic recommendation is given, about the likelihood of a third airline being successful in the Australian airline industry. OzJet started its business in November 2005 with the strategy to enter the Australian business traveller market on the Sydney-Melbourne trunk route. It had to compete with three other airlines: Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Blue. OzJet’s core capability was to provide a top-notch service at a fully flexible economy price. However, the focus on customer service was not able to meet the needs of the targeted market. Business-class travellers were loyal to Qantas, offering a much higher flight frequency and loyalty program for this not so price sensitive market segment. In the end, OzJet had neither the cost structure (using old plains) nor the reputation and financial background to consist against its strong competitors. As a result, despite the high quality of its services, the airline OzJet couldn't find its niche and made a double digit million $ loss (about 10 million $) after 4 months. It ceased all scheduled operations on 12th March 2006 and now operates as a private charter company.

China’s Trade Policy on International Air Transport by Chrystal Zhang,Kareem Yarde Pdf

This book is a political–economic analysis of China’s transformation to become a global aviation power. It aims to identify the driving forces that have shaped China’s ever-evolving international air transport policy direction and goals in the past four decades and further determines how and to what extent these driving forces have shaped China’s considerations and strategies when executing its policy goals through bilateral air services negotiations. The findings reveal that China’s international air transport policymaking has remained in the domain of the country’s aviation regulator, which has enjoyed an exclusivity to exercise its power on the air transport sector. The book argues that China’s international air transport policy direction is in alignment with the country’s overall strategic mission and its goal is set to support the country’s endeavour to realise the “China dream.” It concludes that factors at all levels interact with each other with a far-reaching impact on the country’s policy direction and goal setting; however, these factors are constrained by time and circumstances. The book is a must-read for a wide array of audiences, including, but not limited to, scholars and industry professionals who have an interest in China’s political economy, policymaking, international trade, government behaviour, corporate political activities, air transport, aviation liberalisation, and bilateral negotiations.
