History uses language is specialized ways, so it can be challenging for students to construct responses to historical events. It is only through a focus on these specialized ways of presenting and constructing historical content that students will see how language is used to construe particular contexts. This book provides the results of a qualitative study that investigated the language resources that 8th and 11th grade students drew on to write an exposition and considered the role of writing in school history. The study combined a functional linguistic analysis of student writing with educational considerations in the underresearched content area of history. Data set consisted of writing done by students who were English language learners and other culturally and linguistically diverse students from two school districts in California. The book is an investigation of expository school history writing and teachers’ expectations for this type of writing. School history writing refers to the kind of historical writing expected of students at the pre-college levels.

The greatest services that the History of Education can perform for the teacher are to impel him to analyze his problems more completely and to throw light upon the school practices with which he is himself concerned. By presenting a series of clear-cut views of past conditions, often in marked contrast to his own, it should make him conscious that the present educational situation has to a large degree been traditionally received, and it should at the same time especially help him to understand the origin and significance of current practices. In this way a study of the History of Education will disrupt the teacher's complacent acceptance of the pres ent, and will enable him to reconstruct his ideas in the light of the peculiar conditions out of which the educa tion of his times has sprung. This volume is the result of a suggestion on the part of those pupils that the syllabus be expanded into a textbook. It is written primarily as a teaching instrument, for students who are preparing to teach or who have a cultural interest in the subject but who are unable at the time to undertake a deeper or more detailed study than the survey here presented. Certain characteristics which have been kept in view ought, perhaps, to be mentioned. 1. It is intended to be of practical assistance to the teacher in giving him a better understanding of present-day problems in education. Unless the history of education throws light upon the educational principles and practices of today, it has only an academic interest and should not be a prescribed subject in the training of a teacher. A series of questions and of topics for study has been put at the end of each chapter, therefore, to suggest further study in the relation of the content to the problems that confront us today, and to make clear the manner in which past experience may help to clarify present theories and practices.
