Abelian Groups, Rings, Modules, and Homological Algebra by Pat Goeters,Overtoun M.G. Jenda Pdf

About the book... In honor of Edgar Enochs and his venerable contributions to a broad range of topics in Algebra, top researchers from around the world gathered at Auburn University to report on their latest work and exchange ideas on some of today's foremost research topics. This carefully edited volume presents the refereed papers of the participants of these talks along with contributions from other veteran researchers who were unable to attend. These papers reflect many of the current topics in Abelian Groups, Commutative Algebra, Commutative Rings, Group Theory, Homological Algebra, Lie Algebras, and Module Theory. Accessible even to beginning mathematicians, many of these articles suggest problems and programs for future study. This volume is an outstanding addition to the literature and a valuable handbook for beginning as well as seasoned researchers in Algebra. about the editors... H. PAT GOETERS completed his undergraduate studies in mathematics and computer science at Southern Connecticut State University and received his Ph.D. in 1984 from the University of Connecticut under the supervision of William J. Wickless. After spending one year in a post-doctoral position in Wesleyan University under the tutelage of James D. Reid, Goeters was invited for a tenure track position in Auburn University by Ulrich F. Albrecht. Soon afterwards, William Ullery and Overtoun Jenda were hired, and so began a lively Algebra group. OVERTOUN M. G. JENDA received his bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Chancellor College, the University of Malawi. He moved to the U.S. 1977 to pursue graduate studies at University of Kentucky, earning his Ph.D. in 1981 under the supervision of Professor Edgar Enochs. He then returned to Chancellor College, where he was a lecturer (assistant professor) for three years. He moved to the University of Botswana for another three-year stint as a lecturer before moving back to the University of Kentucky as a visiting assistant professor in 1987. In 1988, he joined the Algebra research group at Auburn University.

Modules and Group Algebras by Jon F. Carlson Pdf

The notes in this volume were written as a part of a Nachdiplom course that I gave at the ETH in the summer semester of 1995. The aim of my lectures was the development of some of the basics of the interaction of homological algebra, or more specifically the cohomology of groups, and modular representation theory. Every time that I had given such a course in the past fifteen years, the choice of the material and the order of presentation of the results have followed more or less the same basic pattern. Such a course began with the fundamentals of group cohomology, and then investigated the structure of cohomology rings, and their maximal ideal spectra. Then the variety of a module was defined and related to actual module structure through the rank variety. Applications followed. The standard approach was used in my University of Essen Lecture Notes [e1] in 1984. Evens [E] and Benson [B2] have written it up in much clearer detail and included it as part of their books on the subject.

Abelian Groups and Representations of Finite Partially Ordered Sets by David Arnold Pdf

The theme of this book is an exposition of connections between representations of finite partially ordered sets and abelian groups. Emphasis is placed throughout on classification, a description of the objects up to isomorphism, and computation of representation type, a measure of when classification is feasible. David M. Arnold is the Ralph and Jean Storm Professor of Mathematics at Baylor University. He is the author of "Finite Rank Torsion Free Abelian Groups and Rings" published in the Springer-Verlag Lecture Notes in Mathematics series, a co-editor for two volumes of conference proceedings, and the author of numerous articles in mathematical research journals.

Infinite Abelian Groups by Irving Kaplansky Pdf

In the Introduction to this concise monograph, the author states his two main goals: first, "to make the theory of infinite abelian groups available in a convenient form to the mathematical public; second, to help students acquire some of the techniques used in modern infinite algebra." Suitable for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in mathematics, the text requires no extensive background beyond the rudiments of group theory. Starting with examples of abelian groups, the treatment explores torsion groups, Zorn's lemma, divisible groups, pure subgroups, groups of bounded order, and direct sums of cyclic groups. Subsequent chapters examine Ulm's theorem, modules and linear transformations, Banach spaces, valuation rings, torsion-free and complete modules, algebraic compactness, characteristic submodules, and the ring of endomorphisms. Many exercises appear throughout the book, along with a guide to the literature and a detailed bibliography.

Endomorphism Rings of Abelian Groups by P.A. Krylov,Alexander V. Mikhalev,A.A. Tuganbaev Pdf

Every Abelian group can be related to an associative ring with an identity element, the ring of all its endomorphisms. Recently the theory of endomor phism rings of Abelian groups has become a rapidly developing area of algebra. On the one hand, it can be considered as a part of the theory of Abelian groups; on the other hand, the theory can be considered as a branch of the theory of endomorphism rings of modules and the representation theory of rings. There are several reasons for studying endomorphism rings of Abelian groups: first, it makes it possible to acquire additional information about Abelian groups themselves, to introduce new concepts and methods, and to find new interesting classes of groups; second, it stimulates further develop ment of the theory of modules and their endomorphism rings. The theory of endomorphism rings can also be useful for studies of the structure of additive groups of rings, E-modules, and homological properties of Abelian groups. The books of Baer [52] and Kaplansky [245] have played an important role in the early development of the theory of endomorphism rings of Abelian groups and modules. Endomorphism rings of Abelian groups are much stu died in monographs of Fuchs [170], [172], and [173]. Endomorphism rings are also studied in the works of Kurosh [287], Arnold [31], and Benabdallah [63].
