Pitfalls of Shoreline Stabilization by J. Andrew G. Cooper,Orrin H. Pilkey Pdf

At the coast all is not what it seems. Decades of beachfront development have seen a variety of efforts to stabilize the shoreline to protect ill-placed beachfront property, both from shoreline erosion and from storm damage. Both of these problems become increasingly critical in a time of rising sea level. Many natural beaches are backed by sea walls, while others have been transformed by whole series of groynes, offshore breakwaters and a plethora of other schemes. Many recreational beaches are actually artificial replicas of the real thing, emplaced to protect badly placed infrastructure and maintained only through ongoing costly beach nourishment. However, all of these attempts to stabilize the shoreline are far from benign. Degradation and even complete loss of the all important recreational beach sometimes results from seawall emplacement. Increasingly, the choice of shoreline stabilization approach will depend upon plans for future response to rising seas which in many cases may involve retreat from the shoreline rather than holding the line. This book explores, through a series of case studies from around the globe, the pitfalls of shoreline stabilization and provides a ready reference for those with an interest in shoreline management. It is particularly timely in a time of global change.

Coastal Landscapes of South Australia by Robert P. Bourman,Colin V. Murray-Wallace,Nick Harvey Pdf

Geologically, the South Australian coast is very young, having evolved over only 1% of geological time, during the past 43 million years since the separation of Australia and Antarctica. It is also very dynamic, with the current shoreline position having been established from only 7000 years ago. The South Australian mainland coast is 3816 km long, with islands providing an additional 1251 km of coast, giving a total coastline of just over 5000 km. South Australian coastal landforms include cliffs, rocky outcrops and shore platforms, mangrove woodlands, mudflats, estuaries, extensive sandy beaches, coastal dunes and coastal barrier systems, as well as numerous near-shore reefs and islands. This book is a landmark study into the variable character of the South Australian coast and its long-term evolution.

Battle of the Greyhounds by Shaun Donovan (Taffy’s Travels’) Pdf

After successfully completing his 12,000 mile bus ride around America, Shaun Donovan now embarks on his latest and greatest challenge - to circumnavigate the coastline of Australia, again by bus, but also to ride the famous 'Indian Pacific' and 'Ghan' trains from west to east and south to north of this vast continent - A 20,000 kilometre journey which must be completed in less than 50 days. In a compelling story of determination, desperation and in some cases deprivation, read how Shaun and his fiance, Sally are roasted alive in sizzling heat and stifling humidity, get drowned-out in tropical storms and flash-flooding and survive an onslaught of electrifying lightning bolts, devastating cyclones and bone-shaking earthquakes before their journey is finally at an end. Add to this a lethal concoction of shark, stingray, and snake attacks they stumble upon during their trip and mix it up with crocodile, box jelly-fish, blue-ringed octopus and deadly stone-fish encounters and you've got yourself one hell of a story-line to tell. Like his American voyage of discovery, many things were learned and achieved, but there was also despair as his dreams of scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef and visiting Ayres Rock were shattered due to weather conditions and personal circumstances, both of which he swears will be done on his return to one of the most diverse and exciting continents on the planet. Australian Coastal Systems by Andrew D. Short Pdf

This book describes the entire coast and beaches and barrier systems of Australia. It covers the coastal processes and systems that form and impact Australia's 30.000 km coast, 12.000 beaches and 2750 barrier systems. These processes include geology, geomorphology, climate, waves, tides, currents, sediment supply, as well as coastal ecosystems. The coast is divided into tropical northern and southern temperate provinces, within which are seven divisions, 23 regions and 354 coastal sediment compartments each of which is described in detail in the 34 chapters. Within these systems are the full range of wave through tide-dominated beaches and barriers ranging from cheniers to massive transgressive dune systems together with a range of onshore and longshore sand transport systems. This is an up to date reference for the entire coast, its present condition and likely responses to the impacts of climate change.

Something Rich and Strange by Sue Hosking,Susan Hosking Pdf

Beaches are places of contact, play, confrontation and friction: first comers always arrive on a beach. After Europeans moved into the Antipodes, the coast was the first frontier to be defined. Flinders' circumnavigation in 1802 had mapped 'Australia', revealing the land as 'girt by sea', as the national anthem continues to remind us. All kinds of ideas about the coast, beaches, sea changes, holiday places and islands swirl and eddy in this unique collection of writing.
