Adenocarcinoma of the Prostate by Andrew W. Bruce,John Trachtenberg Pdf

Carcinoma of the prostate increasingly dominates the attention of urologists for both scientific and clinical reasons. The search for an explanation and the prediction of the variable behaviour of the malignant prostatic cell continues unabated. The search for more precise tumour staging and more effective treatment is equally vigorous. Editors Andrew Bruce and John Trachtenberg have assembled acknowledged leaders in prostate cancer to present those areas of direct interest to the clinician. There are a number of other topics that might have been considered but most of these, such as experimental tumour models or biochemical factors affecting cell growth, still lack immediate application for the clinician. Carcinoma of the prostate continues to have its highest incidence in the western world, and the difference in comparison with the incidence in the Far East appears to be real and not masked by diagnostic or other factors. A number of other epidemiological aspects need careful analysis: Is the incidence increasing? Is the survival improving? Is the prognosis worse in the younger patient? Epidemiological data are easily misused and misinterpreted so that a precise analysis of the known facts makes an important opening chapter to this book.

Precision Molecular Pathology of Prostate Cancer by Brian D. Robinson,Juan Miguel Mosquera,Jae Y. Ro,Mukul Divatia Pdf

This volume focuses on our current understanding of the molecular underpinnings of prostate cancer and their potential application for precision medicine approaches. The emergence and applications of new technologies has allowed for a rapid expansion of our understanding of the molecular basis of prostate cancer and has revealed a remarkable genetic heterogeneity that may underlie the clinically variable behavior of the disease. The book consists of five sections which provide insight about the following: (1) General principles; (2) Molecular signatures of primary prostate cancer; (3) Molecular signatures of advanced prostate cancer; (4) Key molecular pathways in prostate cancer development and progression; (5) and Precision medicine approach: Diagnosis, treatment, prognosis. Precision Molecular Pathology of Prostate Cancer is an important resource for the practicing oncologist, urologist, and pathologist, and will also be useful for researchers in the prostate cancer community.

The clinically organ-confined adenocarcinoma of the prostate by Hans-Peter Schmid Pdf

Dr. Hans-Peter Schmid has addressed in this monograph the basic dilemmas surrounding prostate cancer. These dilemmas include the 40 % histologic incidence of invasive cancer in men in comparison to a 3 % death rate, the extraordinary slow doubling time of four to five years for untreated early clinical stages (T1 and T2 cancers), the limited life span of even healthy men over 70 years of age, and the national and international debates of how to treat this cancer. It is important, however, to recognize that despite these uncertainties, prostate cancer is probably the most predictive of all human solid tumors. Dr. Schmid has addressed the basis for much of this predictability in this monograph. The level of serum PSA and its rate of increase in the untreated patient with a prostate size of less than 50 grams is undoub tedly the most useful of all measurements in predicting volume and grade of the cancer, but it is closely followed by assessment of the extent and percent of grade 4 and 5 cancer in six systematic, spatially separated biopsies. Estimating the amount of suspected cancer on digital rectal examination by assigning a clinical stage is useful, but far less quantitative than PSA and systematic biopsies. The Basel series in this monograph adds strong support to these basic concepts. April 1994 ThomasA. Stamey, M. D. Prostate Cancer by Fred Saad,Michael McCormack Pdf

In Canada, one man in seven risks developing prostate cancer. It is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in men and its incidence has increased by 30 percent since 1988. While most commonly diagnosed after age 70, prostate cancer can also occur in men in their forties and fifties. Like other forms of cancer, this disease affects not only the patient but also his family. At the time of diagnosis, there are many questions that need to be answered. This book provides a simple, concise, practical guide to help patients understand prostate cancer. Now in its third edition, it has, over the years, become an indispensable reference work. It is an outstanding source of information on the prevention and causes of prostate cancer, its early diagnosis and the treatment options available, including their side effects and complications.

Prostate Cancer Imaging by Ayman El-Baz,Gyan Pareek,Jasjit S. Suri Pdf

This book covers novel strategies and state of the art approaches for automated non-invasive systems for early prostate cancer diagnosis. Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed malignancy after skin cancer and the second leading cause of cancer related male deaths in the USA after lung cancer. However, early detection of prostate cancer increases chances of patients’ survival. Generally, The CAD systems analyze the prostate images in three steps: (i) prostate segmentation; (ii) Prostate description or feature extraction; and (iii) classification of the prostate status. Explores all of the latest research and developments in state-of-the art imaging of the prostate from world class experts. Contains a comprehensive overview of 2D/3D Shape Modeling for MRI data. Presents a detailed examination of automated segmentation of the prostate in 3D imaging. Examines Computer-Aided-Diagnosis through automated techniques. There will be extensive references at the end of each chapter to enhance further study.

Carcinoma of the Prostate by Zbigniew Petrovich,Luc Baert,Luther W. Brady Pdf

The American Cancer Society anticipates that during 1995, 244000 new cases of cancer of the prostate will have been diagnosed in the United States, with 40400 deaths from the disease process. The rapid increase in the actual number of new cases in the United States is directly related to more regularized digital rectal examinations and the more frequent and widespread use of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening programs. As a conse quence, major controversies have emerged in how best to manage the patient with cancer of the prostate. These include the necessity of PSA screening programs, how to interpret PSA values, what imaging studies are most appropriate for definition of the true extent of the disease process, the value of pretreatment surgical staging of the disease process, and the value of different treatments. The latter encompass a wide range of options: observa tion, radical prostatectomy, the Walsh-type prostatectomy procedure, definitive external beam radiation therapy, local interstitial implantation using iodine-125, iridium-l92, or palladium-103, orchiectomy, cryosurgery, hyperthermia, and various antitestosterone agents such as estrogens or LH,RH agonists. The present volume deals with the major parameters of controversy with regard to cancer of the prostate and will enable the reader to acquire a better understanding of the disease and how best it might be managed to achieve an optimal outcome with a minimum of complications.
