High-Pressure Science and Technology by K. D. Timmerhaus Pdf

High pressure has become a basic variable in many areas of science and engineering. It extends from disciplines of geophysics and astrophysics through chemistry and physics to those of modern biology, electrical and chemical engineering. This breadth has been recognized for some time, but it was not until the early 1960's that an international group of scientists and engineers established the Association Internationale for Research and Advancement of High Pressure Science and Technology (AIRAPT) for bringing these various aspects of high pressure together at an international conference. The First AIRAPT International High Pressure Conference was held in 1965 in France and has been convened at approximately two to three year intervals since that time. The past four AIRAPT International High Pressure Conferences have been held in Germany, Scotland, Japan and the U.S.S.R. Since the first meeting of this kind, our understanding of high pressure behavior of physical systems has increased greatly.

Advances in High-Pressure Techniques for Geophysical Applications by J. Chen,Y. Wang,Simon Duffy,G. Shen,L.P. Dobrzhinetskaya Pdf

High-pressure mineral physics is a field that is strongly driven by the development of new technology. Fifty years ago, when experimentally achievable pressures were limited to just 25 GPa, little was know about the mineralogy of the Earth's lower mantle. Silicate perovskite, the likely dominant mineral of the deep Earth, was identified only when the high-pressure techniques broke the pressure barrier of 25 GPa in 1970s. However, as the maximum achievable pressure reached beyond one Megabar (100 GPa) and even to the pressure of Earth’s core on minute samples, new discoveries increasingly were fostered by the development of new analytical techniques and improvements in sensitivity and precision of existing techniques. The book consists of six sections which group the papers according to their main topics: a) Elastic and Anelastic Properties; b) Rheology; c) Melt and Glass Properties; d) Structural and Magnetic Properties; e) Diffraction and Spectroscopy; f) Pressure Calibration and Generation. As many papers cover multiple topics, readers may find papers of interest in different sections. All papers are prepared with emphasis on technical details suitable for a technical reference. Many on-line software resources are also listed in as detailed a manner as possible. However, the URL of the software sites may be subject to change without notice. * State of the art in a very important branch of geophysics, namely the experimental determination of material behavior at the extreme conditions of planetary interiors * Emphasis on technical details suitable for a technical reference * Includes many on-line software resources

High Pressure Chemistry, Biochemistry and Materials Science by R. Winter,Jiri Jonas Pdf

This monograph, which is the outcome of the ASI on High Pressure Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Materials Science, illustrates new developments in the field of high pressure science. In fact, for chemists, biochemists, and materials scientists, pressure as an experimental variable represents a tool which provides unique information about systems of materials studied. It is interesting to note how the growth of the high pressure field is also reflected in the content of the recent ASI's dealing with this field. The ASI High Pressure Chemistry held in 1977 was followed by the ASI High Pressure Chemistry and Biochemistry held in 1986, and the coverage of the present ASI also includes applications to materials science. In view of the teaching character of the ASI, it is natural that main contributions to this volume present overviews of the different subfields or applications of high pressure research. In contrast, contributed papers offer more specialized aspects of various high pressure studies. The various contributions to this volume make clear the impressive range of fundamental and applied problems that can be studied by high pressure techniques, and also point towards a major growth of high pressure science and technology in the near future. This ASI focused mainly on advances achieved in the six years since the previous ASI devoted to the high pressure field. The organization of this volume is as follows.

Advanced Technologies for Meat Processing by Fidel Toldrá,Leo M. L. Nollet Pdf

As with the first edition, the main goal of Advanced Technologies for Meat Processing is to provide the reader with recent developments in new advanced technologies for the full meat- processing chain. This book is written by distinguished international contributors with recognized expertise and excellent reputations, and brings together all the advances in a wide and varied number of technologies that are applied in different stages of meat processing. This second edition contains 21 chapters, combining updated and revised versions of several chapters with entirely new chapters that deal with new online monitoring techniques like hyperspectral imaging and Raman spectroscopy, the use of nanotechnology for sensor devices or new packaging materials and the application of omics technologies like nutrigenomics and proteomics for meat quality and nutrition. The book starts with the control and traceability of genetically modified farm animals, followed by four chapters reporting the use of online non-destructive monitoring techniques like hyperspectral imaging and Raman spectroscopy, real-time PCR for pathogens detection, and nanotechnology-based sensors. Then, five chapters describe different advanced technologies for meat decontamination, such as irradiation, hydrostatic and hydrodynamic pressure processing, other non-thermal technologies, and the reduction in contaminants generation. Nutrigenomics in animal nutrition and production is the object of a chapter that is followed by five chapters dealing with nutritional-related issues like bioactive peptides, functional meats, fat and salt reduction, processing of nitrite-free products, and the use of proteomics for the improved processing of dry-cured meats. The last four chapters are reporting the latest developments in bacteriocins against meat-borne pathogens, the functionality of bacterial starters, modified atmosphere packaging and the use of new nanotechnology-based materials for intelligent and edible packaging.

Static and Dynamic High Pressure Mineral Physics by Yingwei Fei,Michael J. Walter Pdf

High pressure mineral physics is a field that has shaped our understanding of deep planetary interiors and revealed new material phenomena occurring at extreme conditions. Comprised of sixteen chapters written by well-established experts, this book covers recent advances in static and dynamic compression techniques and enhanced diagnostic capabilities, including synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction, spectroscopic measurements, in situ X-ray diffraction under dynamic loading, and multigrain crystallography at megabar pressures. Applications range from measuring equations of state, elasticity, and deformation of materials at high pressure, to high pressure synthesis, thermochemistry of high pressure phases, and new molecular compounds and superconductivity under extreme conditions. This book also introduces experimental geochemistry in the laser-heated diamond-anvil cell enabled by the focused ion beam technique for sample recovery and quantitative chemical analysis at submicron scale. Each chapter ends with an insightful perspective of future directions, making it an invaluable source for graduate students and researchers.
