Adventure Diffusion by Gero Vogl Pdf

This easy-to read book looks at the many ways in which diffusion bears on processes that involve dispersion, starting from the Brownian motion of molecules, covering the invasion of exotic plants, migration of populations, epidemics, and extending to the spreading of languages and ideas. Recently, there has been a growing interest in understanding migrations, diffusion and spreading outside the “hard” natural sciences of physics and chemistry, for example the spreading of plants introduced as a result of globalization. Another fascinating story is that of human migration in the distant past, i.e. the immigration of our ancestors who brought agriculture from the Near East, or the fast spread of the Palaeo-Indians into the Americas after the end of the Ice Age. Likewise, the spread of languages in the past, and even more so the current spread and retreat of languages will be described here in terms of diffusion. By understanding these principles, there is hope that some of the less common languages that are threatened by globalization can be saved. Another important implication discussed by the author concerns the outbreak of epidemics; these may be mitigated if we understand their spreading mechanism. Last but not least the spreading of ideas and innovations, a process which changes the world sometimes faster than we wish, can also be usefully described in this picture.

Planning and Managing the Experience Economy in Tourism by Augusto Costa, Rui,Brandão, Filipa,Breda, Zelia,Costa, Carlos Pdf

Tourism is facing a new paradigm that has been brought on by the introduction of experiences in the development, management, and promotion of tourism. Associating experiences to tourism destination and products allows tourists to relate to their vacations differently and helps to fuel a destination’s competitiveness and compliance with new needs and motivations that are being driven by the tourists. When properly design, managed, and developed, tourism experiences can contribute to the destination’s overall sustainability by maximining tourism’s positive impacts and fostering their spillover to local communities. Planning and Managing the Experience Economy in Tourism is an essential reference book that seeks to advance research on tourism experience as well as investigate how tourism experiences can create and increase tourism competitiveness. The book explores how the experience concept has evolved in the last decade, alongside the needs and motivations of consumers, and how it can be conceptualized, designed, managed, and implemented both at the tourism firm and destination levels. Delving further into concepts like creative tourism, destination attributes, and smart experiences, this book serves as a dynamic resource for travel agencies, tourism managers, tourism professionals, marketers, destination managers, government officials, policymakers, academicians, students, tourism officials, planners, and researchers.

An Invitation to Applied Mathematics by Carmen Chicone Pdf

An Invitation to Applied Mathematics: Differential Equations, Modeling, and Computation introduces the reader to the methodology of modern applied mathematics in modeling, analysis, and scientific computing with emphasis on the use of ordinary and partial differential equations. Each topic is introduced with an attractive physical problem, where a mathematical model is constructed using physical and constitutive laws arising from the conservation of mass, conservation of momentum, or Maxwell's electrodynamics. Relevant mathematical analysis (which might employ vector calculus, Fourier series, nonlinear ODEs, bifurcation theory, perturbation theory, potential theory, control theory, or probability theory) or scientific computing (which might include Newton's method, the method of lines, finite differences, finite elements, finite volumes, boundary elements, projection methods, smoothed particle hydrodynamics, or Lagrangian methods) is developed in context and used to make physically significant predictions. The target audience is advanced undergraduates (who have at least a working knowledge of vector calculus and linear ordinary differential equations) or beginning graduate students. Readers will gain a solid and exciting introduction to modeling, mathematical analysis, and computation that provides the key ideas and skills needed to enter the wider world of modern applied mathematics. Presents an integrated wealth of modeling, analysis, and numerical methods in one volume Provides practical and comprehensible introductions to complex subjects, for example, conservation laws, CFD, SPH, BEM, and FEM Includes a rich set of applications, with more appealing problems and projects suggested

Spatial and Temporal Dimensions for Legal History by Massimo Meccarelli,María Julia Solla Sastre Pdf

http://dx.doi.org/10.12946/gplh6http://www.epubli.de/shop/buch/53894"The spatiotemporal conjunction is a fundamental aspect of the juridical reflection on the historicity of law. Despite the fact that it seems to represent an issue directly connected with the question of where legal history is heading today, it still has not been the object of a focused inquiry. Against this background, the book’s proposal consists in rethinking key confluences related to this problem in order to provide coordinates for a collective understanding and dialogue. The aim of this volume, however, is not to offer abstract methodological considerations, but rather to rely both on concrete studies, out of which a reflection on this conjunction emerges, as well as on the reconstruction of certain research lines featuring a spatiotemporal component. This analytical approach makes a contribution by providing some suggestions for the employment of space and time as coordinates for legal history. Indeed, contrary to those historiographical attitudes reflecting a monistic conception of space and time (as well as a Eurocentric approach), the book emphasises the need for a delocalized global perspective. In general terms, the essays collected in this book intend to take into account the multiplicity of the spatiotemporal confines, the flexibility of those instruments that serve to create chronologies and scenarios, as well as certain processes of adaptation of law to different times and into different spaces. The spatiotemporal dynamism enables historians not only to detect new perspectives and dimensions in foregone themes, but also to achieve new and compelling interpretations of legal history. As far as the relationship between space and law is concerned, the book analyses experiences in which space operates as a determining factor of law, e.g. in terms of a field of action for law. Moreover, it outlines the attempted scales of spatiality in order to develop legal historical research. With reference to the connection between time and law, the volume sketches the possibility of considering the factor of time, not just as a descriptive tool, but as an ascriptive moment (quasi an inner feature) of a legal problem, thus making it possible to appreciate the synchronic aspects of the ‘juridical experience’. As a whole, the volume aims to present spatiotemporality as a challenge for legal history. Indeed, reassessing the value of the spatiotemporal coordinates for legal history implies thinking through both the thematic and methodological boundaries of the discipline."

New Perspectives on Martin Buber by Michael Zank Pdf

This volume brings a range of perspectives to bear on the writings and thought of Martin Buber (1878-1965). The contributing authors include renowned Buber specialists who take a new look at Buber's legacy, as well as younger scholars who work in a variety of academic disciplines and contexts, including biblical studies, religious studies, philosophy, intellectual history, sociology, the study of education, and Jewish thought. By relating the legacy of Buber to their respective area of research, they are able to articulate what they find of enduring relevance in Buber's thought and writings. The purpose is to explore new perspectives on Buber and on themes and issues on which he had something to say that continues to engage us. The sixteen essays are grouped in six parts, roughly proceeding in the chronological order of Buber's work, reflecting shifts in his preoccupation and changes in his orientation. The larger themes also represent different approaches to, and perspectives on, Buber's writings in general, including critical retrospectives on his philosophy of dialogue, his political utopianism, and his approach to Hasidism.

The Politics of Recall Elections by Yanina Welp,Laurence Whitehead Pdf

This edited volume presents the first comprehensive analysis of recall processes which have spread globally since the end of the Cold War, and which are now re-configuring the political dynamics of electoral democracy. Drawing on the expertise of country experts, the book provides a coherent and theoretically informed framework for mapping and evaluating this fast-evolving phenomenon. While the existing literature on the subject has so far focused on isolated single-country studies, the collection brings recall experiments to centre stage as it relates them to current crises in the traditional variants of representative democracy. It explains why the spread of recall innovations is set to continue, and to pass a threshold from inattention to urgent engagement. The authors further provide original insights into the rationale for recall, as well as guidance on minimising the accompanying risks.
